Looking forward to playing with ProfitTree. Etsy doesn’t half go in swings at to what it likes on the ad front. One thing I have started to learn is you just have to ignore the lows, ride them out and look at the data over a longer term. I started to drill down on our listings we advertised to try and concentrate the budget. But I’m not sure we’ve given the others enough opportunity for the algorithms to do their thing and get that data. I’ve now gone back to adding everything bar seasonal products that have no relevance for the next two quarters. What you say about the short term/long term gain - once we’d drilled down to only 60 products with a $60 limit, we were making money with Etsy usually spending about $35 with not much drop in sales. Gone back up to just over 300 products with nearly 3x the spend and no longer in profit. But just accept we have to do it to raise awareness and gather the data we need.

Exactly upping and lowering the budget is also not great practice, people see a slow week get scared and turn it off and inhibits getting month over month data which is what you need to make decisions. Overall great value and thank you for commenting ths!

I think I've watched your ads vids 100 times now!! I've had etsy stores (4 total) for going on 5 years now and have around 2K listings in our main store. I'm in the POD clothing space. My SEO is strong. And I've always run $50 a day ads. At the end of March I changed the threshhold to $1k and had a bit of a shock (like you predicted) when my ads (for about 5 weeks) started spending about as much as I was selling. This is our primary store, so I PROBABLY should have experimented with a different one. lol. This last week, I focused on turning off a few ads that were over spending and few keywords that also over spending. And finally, four days ago, we started getting a drastic uptick in all of the stats graphs. Our spending is going down, but our sales are going up. Today we've done close to $400 in the store and spent about $59 so far in adspend. Yesterday we did $250 and the day before we did a little over $300. I THINK we are still in the beginning of the successful ads journey...so I'm excited to see what these numbers look like next month!! :D I think I went about it the scary way (which is why I wanted to type all of this)...and if I could go back, I would have set the cap to $1K, but ONLY on things that have sold. I plan to advertise new listings and deactivate/cull listings and keywords once a month if they have enough stats behind them. Thank you SO much for all of your information Hannah!! And I'm LOVING ProfitTree!! (Although last months stats in their were a little scary. lol.)

Maybe you can add some insight but I feel like this strategy doesn't apply to truly handmade goods. For example, in my shop everything is completely handmade. So everything has a /per hour cost. If I'm spending half of my total revenue on Etsy ads my /per hour cost gets cut in half and now I'm going to be creating for a way less hourly rate that wont be sustainable or feasible. MY products sell well at a very certain price point, and moving in either way from that price point very negatively impacts my sales. In fact it's what I believe is the reason my shop outsales my competition. So if I need to increase my price point to account for spending such a high percentage on Etsy ads I feel like my overall sales will drop drastically. If you've got some thoughts on this I'd really like to hear them :) Great video and thanks for all the free content you put out!

Check out the free ads master class.. Everything else being equal, I do not think that using Etsy ads will cause you to rank higher … you’r listing would likely rank the same and appear next to other person’s listing. The difference is that you’ll have an extra appearance on the page. So you’d have your listing appear on the page just as it would without the ad, but you’d have a second appearance on the page which is your ad. So the benefit there is you’d be SHOWN TWICE on the same page.
@EcomHannah2 ай бұрын
Mmm not exactly so you can actually prove this to yourself in your Etsy stats. If you put ad money behind a listing that ends up performing well. You will see Etsy ads take up the majority of your traffic in your pie chart but as you get more reviews as you get more sales and social proof you’ll organically start being shown more and more and you will see your Etsy ads pie chart shrink and your organic blowup. In addition, you will see something called your cost per acquisition decline because as you gain more organic rank and more social proof, it becomes cheaper to acquire a customer so this cost percentage declines over time. The speed of which this will all occur will be at minimum at least 3 times faster of organic ranking. If you have such a competitive listing that you’re listing is actually being shown twice on the page that is just the icing on the cake, but even with ads that’s hard to do. If you are searching for your own product yourself remember it’s showing you based off your own search history so you’re always gonna see your own listing on the first page because you’re looking for your own listing. That is not what other people see.
@dennisborg77512 ай бұрын
@@EcomHannah - When you get more reviews due to more sales, you begin to rank higher because you have more sales, and it is the sales that cause you to rank higher, not merely because you have an ad. My earlier point was, if EVERYTHING ELSE IS EQUAL, same conversion rate, same number of sales, etc, I would expect both listings to ranked in the results the same. I do not believe the listing with the ad would be ranked higher than the one without any ads. Just merely having an ad would not cause you to rank higher organically just simply because you have an ad. But as the ads cause more sales, then Etsy will rank you higher because of the sales (not because of the ads … ads being an indirect cause of ranking higher and the sales themselves being the direct cause in ranking higher.) The reviews themselves would not be a direct cause of ranking higher, but would give buyers more confidence in you so they would be more likely to buy from you, thus raising your conversion rate, meaning more sales and those sales , not the reviews, would cause you to rank higher organically.

Hi! From my experience with Etsy, it seems that customers are primarily purchasing the listings that are advertised at any given time. In 90 percent of cases, they don’t explore the rest of my store. I’ve checked this multiple times. I typically advertise 2-3 listings at a time, and those are the ones that get purchased. Items that aren’t advertised don’t get bought. After a week or two, I advertise different listings, and then those get purchased. The issue is that my profits are completely consumed by advertising costs. However, if I don’t advertise, my listings don’t get seen at all. I’m unsure what to do about this. Any thoughts?

How long should I let a $25 budget run on 70 digital products to then learn about what to leave on and turn off? I am watching the ROAS, but would love any general advice. Best, Meagan
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
So you’re gonna want to analyze each listing individually, I would say you would want to invest at least the sale price or in your case double or triple because it’s so low ticket maybe to have gathered enough clicks to make a decision. Time is also a big variable because sometimes if the listing is young, it just needs more time for those conversions to roll in and start that snowball effect
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
But there’s also many other variables like how fast does it spend? Is it easily pulling out winners where you have the opportunity to put more winners in fast and turn off ones that don’t perform immediately right away. You create these thresholds for yourself as to what a performing listing means to you, maybe you’re OK with break even on the ad level or maybe you want to clear at least X percent profit compared to top line, you know what I mean

The biggest issue I have with ETSY ads is that I set my budget to 5 dollars a day and within 15 mins the budget is depleted. So I set it to $15 or $20 and within an hour is gone. I have resorted to adding 1 dollar every few mins to make it last longer. Somehow I am beginning to think ETSY just eats up my budget and takes it. I should mention I am not getting any sales and these products for many months sold very well. One day they stopped selling and it has been dead ever since for the past 3 weeks or so.
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
That’s actually a really good sign. That means that your listings are really clickable meaning you optimized them really well if you’re actually earning the click. Etsy doesn’t waste your budget. It’s called pay per click so you had to actually earn the click in order to get it in the first place.
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
If you sell a lot of low ticket items, this is very common, but you’re safe play here is only put on ads for ones that organically do really well. Also, five dollars of spend is really virtually nothing because that could only yield you a handful of clicks and you really need hundreds of clicks to be able to make a decision.
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
What’s more concerning is if someone has their budget set and it does not spend it all, that’s usually a result of a product problem but in your case, you just really have to be strict on dictating where that money is going so you only want the money to go to listings that yield you a good return, but you’re probably gonna need to spend more than five dollars on a listing to make that decision depending on your sale price

So far it's been a week and my stats are 10.4K VIEWS, 114 CLICKS and 8 ORDERS... I know you mentioned that we should see monthly stats and conversion rate of 3% and above which is super good but considering my margins are not that great with low price digital products should I keep on running ads for my products as avg CPC I'm paying is around 25 cents?
@EcomHannah3 ай бұрын
Hi...Conversion rate is not a one-size-fits-all metric. A 3% rate could be good for one person but bad for another. I may have mentioned that a 3% overall rate is not bad in the grand scheme of things, but it is only meaningful in your specific use case. I made that comment to illustrate that many people get upset, thinking they're completely failing, when in reality, it could actually be good for them. For you specifically, in these low-margin spaces, the only thing that actually matters is spend versus top-line sales. You need to calculate those marketing cost percentages and see if the listing makes sense. Go to your top listing and compare spend versus top-line sales over the same period. What is that marketing cost percentage costing you? Remember, it's not the revenue from the ad but the top-line sales for the same time as you analyze your spend.

Does this mean that even if I turn off keywords I don’t want to use for ads, Etsy is still using my ad budget for those keywords while collecting feedback? It seems like some keywords are still showing up in ads, even after I turned them off.
@AdsyBoost2 ай бұрын
Good question! That message means Etsy is testing the feature to allow keyword control, but during the test, Etsy may still be using your budget for those keywords even if you turn them off. Etsy is likely collecting data and feedback to improve the ads system. If certain keywords are still showing up in ads, it’s probably part of the test. Keep an eye on it, and you can always share feedback with Etsy if it’s not working as expected.

I had a listing which had really high view and click stats.. However sale numbers of that item has been low as the item has a large volume and I adjusted a high shipping cost for that.. For the last 3-4 days, the views & click stats of that item has decreased from 500-600 to 5-6 views/clicks.. How can that sudden decrease be possible ?
@EcomHannah7 ай бұрын
These are the ebs and flows of etsy that they will never tell you, its likely it will come back and to not stress too much, I know its hard. Try to stay away from analyzing small time periods on views and clicks like this and analyze month over month. There could be a million things etsy could have been doing with that listing we will never know but its not in your best interest to get caught up in small time frame stats like that and continue analyzing the big picture. Its also important to note that listings do have life spans and can die over time so its important to keep your engine healthy by consistently testing new listings and products month over month

I'm only skeptical about ads because I fear once I use that route then Etsy might "throttle" my organic sales to keep me spending money for ads. I'm not saying that's what happens but i think it's a possibility. Does anyone have experience with turning off ads? How did your listings behave after it?
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
In my experience, it contributes to the organic as well so you will see the expansion on both ends since you’re getting ranked organically as well the more sales and reviews you get. This has been my experience with my brands and my clients brands.

Hello Hannah - I hope you are well today. I have my products maxed out on Etsy Ads & have done so for a while now. The thing that really annoys me is that when I go to the detailed stats of of my listings it is showing as many as 2150 searches words on one single product that led people to click on my advert - mixed amongst these search words are many that have absolutely nothing to do with my product so these are costing me click money for nothing. I understand that you can go through the list & turn off the words / phrases that are irrelevant right but the time that it takes to go through these 2150 words / phrases on one listing out of the 600 listings that I advertise makes it non sensical, I just dont have the time. Do you have any advice on how to get rid of the bad wood from the good wood within the Etsy Ads detailed stats? Best wishes Dave in the UK
@EcomHannah7 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! Sadly, no but you’re really only turning off anomaly words like words that clearly do not describe what you’re selling. I’m not sure what niche your in but for instance, if you’re selling pillows that are 18 inches and you got a click for 16 inch pillows, obviously that’s an anomaly cause you don’t sell that.
@EcomHannah7 ай бұрын
Out of all your listings that your advertising you really wanna focus on the top 10% since those are the ones spending the most of your money and it’s likely that you’ll turn off a lot of listings completely. That are not profitable after ads.

I've commented before but it seems like every time I increase my ad budget or turn on more listings to advertise (no matter by how much) my sales drop from hundreds of $ a day to nothing, even after 30 days. I try my best not to get emotional but it's hard to seemingly lose thousands a month when trying to make more by upping the ante

This is super interesting, can you give me your ad cost % in Feb and approx daily spend vs March June and July?What marketing cost do you need to still clear a happy profit? Lets start there.
@sheli47953 ай бұрын
The same thing just happened to me. I was getting momentum in my shop at $500 per day, so I increased to $1000 and overnight I lost almost all sales. I went from 7-10 sales per day to none or maybe 1 or 2. It seemed like it couldn't be a coincidence because my whole shop died, not just one design or niche. I went back to $500/day and sales came back. I think it must have something to do with the algo because many other sellers notice this. I have about 350 listings and am still working on filling out my shop. Perhaps if you don't have enough listings/demand to support the higher ad budget, you get demoted in the algo somehow? I just don't think it's a coincidence as so many have noticed it. I don't think I'll increase my budget again until my store is more filled out and has more sales.
@EcomHannah3 ай бұрын
I have heard when you do a drastic shock like that the algo does not really know want to do, try hedging up in smaller amounts, but even if you did not put back to 500 in a week or so it would come back for sure, Dave from ATC says the same thing on this

@@EcomHannah I increase by $5/$10 increments, but I also frequently add new SKUS and turn the ads on for them as I list them so I'm advertising more listings. Happened last week - turned my ads up another $10, sales drastically decreased. I've had the same budget for 2 weeks and sales are terrible. Makes me want to go back to the old budget. When you launch a completely new SKU - do you turn your ad budget up? Or are you already at max ads budget? If I'm not, should I be turning the budget up as I add new SKUS?

Theres one thing i dont hear people talk about much and i guess thats because most of you are American but those of outsixe of the US, for example in the EU, have to pay VAT on every dollar put on adspend. So for example I live in Poland where the VAT is 23%, so if I spend $100 on ads, I pay $23 in VAT as well. It makes it hard to be worth it for us. I've spent more money than I'm willing to admit on ads and because of the added VAT, it ended up with me basically breaking even or, in the beginning, losing money
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
I am just now starting to understand this and I like that you brought this up, so your saying you have to pay VAT on marketing NOT just on the sale amount?
@KateTheMama6 ай бұрын
@@EcomHannah i pay VAT on all Etsy service fees and not on the sale. So for example, let's round the Etsy fees to 10% of each sale. Let's say i have a sale for $100. I pay $10 to Etsy in fees, then I pay an additional $2.30 in VAT (23% of my Etsy fees). Now if I spend $100 on Etsy ads, this counts as a service provided to me by Etsy. Therefore I pay 23% VAT on this as well, so an additional $23. Does that make sense?
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
wow that is so crazy thank you for sharing this, what is the reasoning for charging VAT on fees instead of your sale price? do you know why they do this?
@KateTheMama6 ай бұрын
@@EcomHannah honestly it's so complicated i don't even fully understand. But my understanding is that my customers that are in Europe will pay the VAT respective to their country (23% in Poland, I think 20% in UK, etc, and Quebec has 15% GST + QST charges... Various states have different tax rules also). I only pay VAT on things I purchase myself, so for example the Etsy fees & ads. Printify doesn't charge it fortunately, so I don't worry about it. From my understanding, the only reason i pay VAT on Etsy fees is because of my IP address

Hi Hannah, I love your videos and the way you look at Etsy as a business, encouraging people to make decisions based on data and logic instead of just putting their art on Etsy and hoping for the best. Thank you so much for what you're doing! ❤ I've been on Etsy for 3 years now. I always have ads on, but just for a few dollars because every time I try to increase my ads, I see sales, add to cart, favorites, and all good things go down. Normally, after a few days, I just lower them again. After watching you, I decided to give it a try again, and again everything stops. Is it normal after you make changes to ads? Is it the algorithm? Will it get better with time? I would love the ads to work, but for now, my experience was always disappointing. I only turn on ads for my best products and products that sell organically. I also see other sellers experiencing the same and trying to have it on for a month, and everything goes normally once they turn ads off. Sorry for the long message and thanks again! 🙌❤️
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
Hey, thank you for the love and commenting seriously, it means a lot! It’s unlikely that turning on the ads is the correlated variable that’s causing the views to go down. It’s normal for shops to have ebbs and flows one day having a really good sales day the next day it sucks but you wanna look at a big time period, Month over month, quarter over quarter, year over year, etc. To only have them on for a few days you can’t really draw any conclusions about what happened in that time. Toggling them on and off also gives unreliable data to make any decisions since they have to re-begin optimizing every time you turn them on again, Especially if the budget is only a few dollars.
@EcomHannah6 ай бұрын
Only having listings on that takeoff organically first is a really good safe play for this but again you want to analyze in big enough time period to be able to make a decision.

Etsy ads are totally broken. Until 2 years ago I had 8-10 people per day clicking and one day something happened and since 2 years I have 1 click per few days. Many days nobody clicks. I didn't change anything when it happened. It is the way it is. It became totally useless. Almost nobody comes to my shop now and I have maybe 2-4 sales per year. Which of course never coves the cost of advertising. I pay usually 10 times more for ads than I get profit. So telling us to invest the money we earn doesn't make any sense
