Third Party Politics and Social Change
We would like to present a special edition of Economic Update featuring an exclusive discussion between Professor Richard Wolff and Dr. Cornel West. This program was recorded in June, 2023, but unfortunately we were unable to air this important discussion at that time. You will hear Dr. West explain why he undertook the challenge and burden to run for President of the United States. Given the political reality of US politics, as exhausted by the two major parties, we thought it would be a public service to invite Dr. West to be heard in this form. No endorsement is intended.
If you haven't already, please subscribe to our channel, follow us on social media and of course be sure to sign up on our website:

I think a lot of people misunderstand Cornel West’s disposition. He comes out of the intellectual tradition of black ministerial leaders like MLK, dissidents like Malcom X, and great writers like W.E.B. DuBois. When he calls everyone his brother/sister, he is speaking with the heart of a sincere Christian. This kind of deep respect towards others is startling to many accustomed to the cynical and standoffish nature of folks nowadays. I believe Cornel is a wise and honest man, and the only real choices in this election for people with a conscience are him and Jill Stein.
@azmadu
@azmadu Ай бұрын
No, I don't think they misunderstand him at all. They simply don't want him to be speaking as he is because it shames the USA, which is beyond redemption at this point, and that they state that he'll be stealing votes from Biden which is just nonsense to say the least. Biden is NEVER going to win in Texas and so if Dr West goes and wins any votes in Texas, how were they Joe Biden's votes? Biden has to earn EVERY single vote and anyone thinking that he has the right to assume voters support him then he's in for a shock bigger than Hilary losing to Donald Trump.

Yes I consider this conversation a historic one. Because a new voice of hope is now emerging not only in America but for the whole world. As an African man and after all as a global citizen, I congratulate Mr.Cornel West for his courageous action to present himself for a presendency of the U.S.A 2024 It seems to me that the American establishment is practicising a systematic denials of the new geopolitical reality in the world, what in French political language we say: "la politique de l' Autruche". in conclusion, I would suggest to emphasise in explaining to the American people, the mechanism of the creation of inequalities that are diffusing more and more not only in America but in the whole world, and the spread of global risks and crisis which are linked to global capitalism. We should make a sustained effort to explain to a lay person the critics of capitalism that Carl Marx has well analysed in his reference book" das kapital": the key concept of surplus production value. The one thing I disagree with Cornel West on is affirmative action. In fact, I'd argue that affirmative action is racist, because it punishes poor white people for the crimes of their ancestors. This only feeds into the racism, and I refuse to vote for anyone who feeds culture wars. RFK Jr. put it very well. We don't need race based affirmative action. We need to invest in impoverished communities based on class, not race. Because black communities are disproportionately poor, they will receive disproportionate funding, and that is fine. But we cannot leave behind other impoverished races. We cannot make any top-down investments that use race to distribute that investment. If black communities want to build movements independent of the government to raise money for poor black communities, more power to them.
@maloneyjmatthew
@maloneyjmatthew Ай бұрын
I may be mistaken but You seem to be conflating affirmative action with reparations. There is a big difference between them and not all black people agree on how or if they should be enacted but a national conversation on both is absolutely necessary. And even though classism has been on the rise for decades, racism is still our biggest impediment to real and radical change and it is deeper and more insidious than many white people still realize. A debt owed is a debt owed. And reparations isn’t ONLY about slavery; it’s about Jim Crow and the lynchings, it’s about redlining real estate districts, it’s about police brutality, and it’s about mass incarceration. May your conscience and your heart be opened to this reality. James Baldwin is someone who’s writings can help. Peace and love
@limitisillusion7
@limitisillusion7 Ай бұрын
@@maloneyjmatthew Affirmative action and reparations, if based on race, are racist. Race reparations or affirmative action policies that only benefit black people make the implication that the black people are inferior, because they imply that a white person doesn't need as much income to achieve the same outcomes. You cannot argue that the difference in outcomes between black and white people is caused by income while also providing economic support based on race. You must logically provide economic support to the poor white people (and other races) as well if you wish to enforce the idea that income alone is responsible for the differences in outcomes. A simple thought experiment to explain my point: If the Europeans who settled in America had gone to Africa to acquire slaves and the African tribes they ran into had a much more developed economy and military, do you think the American settlers could have enslaved the Africans? I'd argue the opposite was more likely to happen... that the African tribes would have enslaved the American settlers. And what if the American settlers and African tribes best on an equal footing economically and militarily? Ignoring the likely language barrier, perhaps they'd simply trade peacefully with each other to build a mutually beneficial relationship. But that's not what happened. The American settlers were technologically and physically dominant and they used that power to enslave. Find an example of historical slavery and the common theme you will find is a power imbalance, _not_ racial differences. Beyond that, I reiterate: Punishing poor white Americans for the crimes of their ancestors will only create more racial tension. We don't want to fix the problems of impoverished black communities while leaving impoverished white communities in shambles. That will only swing the racism pendulum back in the other direction. We want to ease that pendulum back to center, stop it in the middle, and then get rid of the pendulum.

If Americans make a rationed vote like we did in Mexico recently by Claudia Shiembaum, Cornel West is the man who could save the United States from leading the world into World War III with Biden or continuing American imperialism with Trump. @@Name-ql7jf I was planning on voting for Biden in the beginning but then he decided to back a genocide and his goons made my life miserable (took away my living and healthcare) while people on the internet (pretty much only Democrats) pretended that Cornel West was not a viable candidate. That's when I realized I will never vote Democrat ever again because Democrats are back stabbing criminals that see nothing wrong with wage slavery. Cornel West is the only viable candidate with a solid platform. All of his detractors can never come up with a reason , based on his platform, why he is a bad candidate. The best they can do is misunderstand his platform or resort to cheap insults and back Biden who is still implementing many of Trumps policies. I know you probably think of yourself as some sort of progressive but based on my experience you likely won't even advocate for Cornel West to be in the debates even though 71% of Americans want that. Democrats are just mad because they think they own people and their votes based on the idea that they are somehow "taking the high road" even though they clearly are not.

Wow wow wow, two great human beings. I would vote for Cornell certainly (I'm Australian). What an orator. I wish I had a tenth of his abilities. Such a poet. Beautiful just to listen to. I feel like a slug in comparison. I hope he does have an effect because the US does deserve better than what they have at the moment and the world does deserve not being subjugated by such an awful military power any longer.

An orator does not necessarily make a good president. Case in point: Obama.
@AntonStampfl
@AntonStampfl Ай бұрын
@@oswarz sort of. Obama is a vacuous type of person. A sort of cardboard cutout that is wheeled out to get what the American Complex wanted. His words I found totally meaningless and were I think naive at the best of times. A bit like Pyle from The Quiet American. Makes me shudder.

If Americans make a rationed vote like we did in Mexico recently with Claudia Shiembaum, Cornel West is the man who could save the United States from leading the world into World War III with Biden or continuing American imperialism with Trump. While with Cornel West all americans would make history due to the fact that americans would have for the first time a capitalist government with a socialist orientation of Henri de Saint Simón. But the sad thing is that Mr. West has no chance of winning, because the favorite of the masses is Trump. Although the winds of change have blown lately. Americans, be smart, Have the courage to change the destiny of your lives and the world with your reasoned vote. Biden knocks down every Chinese peace attempt in Ukraine and gives this country permission to attack Russian cities.

If Milton Friedman, the man whose theories laid the foundation for today's capitalism, were still alive, I would have loved for Richard Wold to have debated this issue with him. It was Friedman who stated that the primary responsibility of any corporation is to serve their shareholders. It would have been a knok-down, drag-out brawl!

Thank you Richard Wolff for this great interview with Cornel West. Yes, American people need to know that we have a great opportunity to finally address the real issues on the ground with common sense focus on Capitalism and the ongoing injustice and unfairness in regular people’s lives- the poor and working class! ❤

I think he is, I think the operative declaration of it all pivots off his moral consistency. The Greens didn't align with him, but that doesn't mean he is unserious. They just invited him out, and that relationship wasn't for him. I can tell you the work being done by him and on his behalf is very serious. He is also very open to partnering to other movements and organizations to give us all a voice and has said as much quite openly. You should peek in on what is happening with him sometimes, there's very exciting things to see.

I understand that and in the same vein, I was so hurt and heartbroken by Bernie. I get and have my very down days over these politics, but I hold on to a glimmer of hope that people will do what they can and take any of the good that comes from it. You have to concede that we can understand Bernie's dance based upon what his right populist counterpart is going through regardless of how you feel about Trump. The Establishment is cruel. Dr. West has just gotten his first taste of the threats and none of us has ever been under that level of scrutiny. I take that Dr. West is teaching and his movement should continue non stop past the election. We need that 5th house. Grass roots, self advocacy and mutual aid. Brother West is a disappointment in not willing to try and work with more organised political parties like the Green or PSL. Others have argued it partly has to do with his personality and, sad to say, his ego.
@paulsherman51

Disagree. Greens have been overtaken by corporatocracy hiding behind nonprofits--witness their downfall with R. Nader. PSL is too fragmented and disjointed with myriad of all those tiny little, abeit however important, issues. Dr. Cornel West is the only sensible genuine whole, the real deal, the gestalt, the big picture down to each and every little person looks at, and interacts within, that big picture.

Hey comrades, my life is at the moment at a turning point and I need your advice. I have some more days to apply for university, and don't know which study course I shall take. In the future I want to be a communist agitator. That's my only wish. The question now: Which study course would you recommend me attend at university? I have thought about political sciene, sociology, (cultural and social) anthropology, economics, psychology and philosophy, but recently I thought of history as well. But what do you guys think, what's the best study course for someone who wants to devote him-/herself to the revolution? Thanks for your help! Have a nice day :)

I honor the path of beauty Doctor Wests life has taken. Unfortunately, his ability to speak truth to power has been extremely underwhelming and somewhat milque toast. In politics, you must step on toes speak truth to power And not worry about hurting someone's feelings if it means the truth has been told. It's debate during occupy wall street against the banksters along with the great chris Hedges was epic. Unfortunately, he does not have a mean bone in his body. Which is somewhat necessary within Nationall politics.
