Think about it, what is gold good for except exchange value? Over and over the cutthroat capitalist idiots do their boom and bust, along with periodic encouragement to the general public to buy gold,, supposedly as a hedge against inflation and at elevated prices...... But what happens? The people need goods and services, so they sell their gold BACK for reduced prices back to the rich cutthroat capitalist shyster... Richie Rich makes a commission on either buying or selling so what does he care? A debt-based currency is the same thing, sure you can borrow money for starting an enterprise, but of course you have to continuously kick back a large portion to the LA cosa nostra that gave you the money to begin with....... You may or may not make out with your small business, but Richie gets his commission either way, as always....... The solution is obviously a socialist economy where the financial sector is not run by worthless garbage cutthroat capitalists... At least until egalitarianism arrives, you know the federation, some form of exchange will need to be used... but cutthroat capitalism rewards the worst sociopaths in a society, and puts THEM in the driver's seat of the direction of society WHEN THEY'RE THE LAST people who should be in the driver's seat......

The United States (US) would never have used capitalism as its economic model, if it were truly the champion of democracy. Capitalism is designed to create uneven development, and that only favors oligarchs. The evidence shows that People’s Republic of China is more democratic than the US. China has already eradicated her poverty, while the US has 38 million Americans living in poverty today. It is important to mention that China has 4 times the US’ population. How was China able to accomplish that? China government does not allow its oligarchs to do whatever they want. That is why 90% of Chinese are satisfied with their government, despite the US accusing China of being a dictatorship. Conversely, the US allows its oligarchs to do whatever they want. That is also why only 33% of Americans are satisfied with our government. These oligarchs don’t care what happens to the 99% of US citizens. The US is more interested in trying to force China to give US oligarchs a, so-called, “level playing field”. What that means is for China to allow US oligarchs to do whatever they want in China like in the US. China, of course, refuses to yield her sovereignty to US oligarchs. War is a racket in the US. That is what US Major General Smedley Butler in his book, and US President Eisenhower in his farewell address told us. The US is fighting the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to make its oligarchs even richer. Today, 9 of the 10 richest men in the world are US citizens. Despite US university students all over the nation protesting and getting arrested to stop the artificial colonial settler state of Israel’s genocide against the indigenous people of Palestine, the US government is determined to violate the Genocide Convention. The US recently threatened the International Criminal Court with sanction and a military invasion, if it dares to issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials. The US will do everything in its power to keep economic development uneven. Therefore, it is up to the 99% of us to stop this US out of control capitalistic train, before it kills us all! Capitalism can destroy humanity too!

Wolff is fine on the subject of uneven development. On monetary issues, however, he's far more shaky since he doesn't seem to understand what MMT says about the money system. The U.S., for example, doesn't have to tax (or borrow) to fund public services because it has a sovereign currency. So long as Congress allocates budgeting for public projects and services, it doesn't need to tax. That only happens if money isn't authorized at the Federal level, but to my knowledge Wolff has never made a distinction between Federal, state, and local budgeting.
@user-ev7vh2is6b7 ай бұрын
You are referring to specific particular ways capitalism functions within the USA at various governing bureaucratic levels, however the entire capitalism system is far bigger and is not limited by the specific monetary conditions within the USA. For a start, Capitalism is only a theory,. The theory never involves human factor and effect of environment and politics. Capitalism in US is different for that in India, China, UK, Germany., Thailand etc. Even Capitalism in USA 1800's is different from that in 2020s. Whether the people in a country enjoy lives depends on the types of political leadership. Are the leaders pro common people or pro elites ? In the US the leaders are pro-elites less pro-common people. In China, the leaders are pro-common people. Many countries' leaders are pro-corruption. So capitalism or communism are just theory, and theory is always prefect without human factors.
@paulkesler17447 ай бұрын
Authoritarian leaders can destroy any system. The problem in America today is that we don't have SINGLE leaders anymore. Instead, we have a corporate oligarchy dispersed throughout the globe. What we think of as single leaders are typically merely figureheads within the oligarchical network. Not that there aren't variations, but as capitalists accumulate power, the variations diminish. It's one thing to perform a coup d'etat on a single noxious tyrant; quite another when you're faced with an integrated network of totalitarian corporations whose goals of resource-plunder and worker exploitation are nearly identical, differing mainly in degree, not kind, from country to country.

And when you let in the flood of immigrants (as has been), you will further harm the struggling average Americans. So either you are very badly thought out, or you're an immigrant seeking to help your own (selfish).

A misleading argument was made. We use fiat, which is lent at preferred rates for some and higher rates to others. In addition, the central bank inflates the fiat/currency supply ($$$$) to corporations, foundations, etc. They get to spend that cash before producers are aware of how much currency inflation has occurred. As producers get a better understanding of the cash/material ratio, they raise prices to match the central bank (Marxist) inflation. Richard Cantillion described this effect first, look it up. The poor mostly pay bills and those bills are more expensive the the bills paid by the wealthy, who also have funds let over to buy assets (which produce the goods the poor buy).

He is substituting the words. "Imperfect developement" for "equalty". Socialists believe in "equality", pointing out how things are so unfair. He's not being completely honest. Immigrants that come from South America don't try to escape capitalism. Thats not true. All ills of modern society are not the fault of capitalism. Capitalism in modern America is nothing like Imperial colonialism of the 17th, 18th century. He uses extreme examples. Is capitalism perfect? No. Is there extreme wealth from billionaires to the rest of us? Yes. But the answer is not to attack capitalism thinking socialism alla Bernie Sanders is the answer. However , nothing has created wealth like capitalism. That's a fact. @@legpol

Wealth is like a differential equation that converges to either 0 or infinity. There’s a divergence and if you start above it your wealth grows exponentially but below your wealth trends towards Zero.
@nightowl54757 ай бұрын
You’re right Professor Wolff. For Capitalism to function, there needs to be extreme poverty for a small minority to obtain extreme wealth. That is a highly inequitable destructive system. It’s playing out right now in our country. Don’t blame the poor immigrant coming here illegally, blame the capitalists that are opening those borders letting them in to exploit them and keep all wages lowered so all the wealth goes to the very top. So, capitalism destroys the middle class and makes everyone slaves. You don’t need a PhD in Economics to understand that, although here’s a guy with a PhD in Economics telling you that!

Except that capitalism has never been fully realized. By this I refer to the condition raised by Mortimer J. Adler in the 1950s, which is that all or at least the overwhelming majority of people in a society earn income out of the ownership of capital goods. I would describe the centuries-long system under which most of us live as evolved landlordism. It began as agrarian landlordism and is today "agrarian-commercial-industrial-and-financial landlordism." Any person who does not own a residential property is essentially a sharecropper, sharing a high portion of their income with an absentee landlord.

Yes, uneven development is a key problem with capitalism. It also happens to be a key problem of living on planet earth. This has been a problem under every social and economic system, at every point in history. The only thing Socialists can claim is that their ideology has theorized about changing this problem. They have never solved it. In fact, their theories always produce the opposite effect when they are put to the test. It happens every time it is tried.

I'm sorry but prehistory is full of people living together without artificial scarcity being imposed like it is under capitalism. The uneven development arises because greedy marketeers snatch up control of resources and then impose scarcity upon the people who make the products they don't get to use. I know you know this.

Marx missed the market by not fully appreciating the power of landed and other rentier interests to cause uneven development, generating cycles of boom and bust that had serious effects on labor and the use and production of capital goods. Marx need to think more deeply about the outcomes of what he already embraced; namely, the public capture of of land rent (i.e., the potential annual rental value of all locations, of all natural resources, and of all other natural assets with an inelastic supply). This important systemic reform is essential for cooperation to blossom and to keep competition within its appropriate limits.
