There once was a European nation that was fairly weak & defenseless. It feared attack possibly from the West but much more from its ancient enemy to the East that had attacked it many times before. There was no hope of negotiation because the two countries were ruled by vastly different philosophies. Finally, it decided to build up its military into a powerful adversary. The plan would take ten years. It decided to double, then triple the size of its armed forces, to be at least half the size of its eastern foe. It began to acquire massive numbers of armored vehicles, to acquire the means to defend its skies from any assault, and to expand its navy. It planned that if war came it could strike with lightning speed and horrible deadly force. The plan was that, if possible, the eastern foe would be forced to sue for peace with its capital of Moscow under occupation. However, am I talking about 1930s Germany or 2020s Poland?

A bit of a rash comment. Maybe in some disillusion communities - I do not agree with Brexit, but you’ll find among the majority of voters it was about “sending a message to Westminster”. To summarise - communities left behind by successive governments were spun by the leave campaigns promises, and anger towards austerity measures and the way in which the country was run was directed towards the EU and thus the sovereignty movement began. To suggest it was racially motivated is hate stirring - the vast majority of Britain’s respect our new and overwhelming friendly and polite “Polish” and “Romanian” workers.

You see I live in a city in Bulgaria that is considered to be the industrial powerhouse in the Balkans. Multiple international conglomerates like Liebherr, Schneider electric etc. and literally hundreds of others have plants that are employing thousands of people here. That's great you would say? What's the problem? Well you see they do push the local economy ahead, but unless you are vendor of supporting industry, you will not see a glimpse of what they are making. The wages are the same for all the workers on the production floor as well as the administration - no difference whatsoever on witch plant you work. Any profit made is invested in expansion of factories and buying new warehouses, new machinery and producing more jobs that pay just enough so you can exist and drag your ass in your 20 yr old car back to work. It is as close as it gets to slavery. There is agreement for the wages at the main factories as well as there is agreement for the wages at supporting industry. You have to realise the foreign investments are not here to improve your life or wellbeing. They are here to suck as much profits as possible while paying as little as possible to the people making it happen.

Poland is for sure the next South Korea of eastern and central Europe. I believe It will be one of the most economically advanced and developed country in 15-20 years. Have no doubt that many people around the world will wish to move there in the future as immigrants and labour force but Poland should not make such a big mistake like their neighbouring countries did. Do not let immigrants from Africa, Middle East and Balkan countries enter your beautiful country. Poland should have it’s own way to be successful.

And now, South Korea is the first country in the world to have sub-1 fertility rates, Poland is already on the smaller side on the European scale, both population and economically, the 2-4% growth will countiue for the next decade, before stagnating due to lower populations growth
@JosipBrozTITO8489 Жыл бұрын
Poland will not be a "Second South Korea" - South Korea's success was based on domestic brands of electrical engineering products and industrial products... Name me a single brand of Polish smartphones, televisions or cars that are sold in the USA, for example. Money that Poland could use for further economic growth is being spent on American weapons, which is not a happy solution in the face of the impending demographic crisis.

Not only this. They forgot to mention that in 2017, both Poland and the Czech Republic were included in the elite group of highly developed countries (by all 3 most important rating agencies, the IMF and the World Bank). The map of Poland from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth period is also incorrect. Ukraine was part of the Kingdom of Poland, not the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. There are also a few other mistakes, e.g. regarding the Polish industry, but overall the film is OK.

I am Polish and I know that my homeland can develop thanks to the work of the minds and hands of Poles. Poles have always abhorred invading other peoples and have never been colonizers plundering the resources of conquered areas. Poles are a nation founded on the desire for freedom and they want other nations to be free. Poles do not expect "manna from heaven", i.e., for example, very rich resources of gold, oil or natural gas discovered on Polish territory. Polish land hides enormous natural resources, but their extraction is currently very expensive and would mean the destruction of beautiful Polish nature. Therefore, we base our development on educating children and youth, stimulating the talents and entrepreneurship of people living in Poland. And these are not only ethnic Poles! Poles are enterprising, inventive, brave and resourceful and... they want to work hard (you can't say the same about Germans, for example!). Poles have survived extremely difficult trials that would lead to annihilation of any other European nation - we live next door to two barbarians! We try to develop our homeland without exploiting it unreasonably. We build highways and expressways with respect for nature: roads run through national parks are unique, expensive culverts are built under the roads and special bridges over the roads - for the migration of wild animals. Wild animals even enter Polish cities and we do not kill them! These are our "lesser brothers" (Saint Francis) and these brothers are even earlier inhabitants of Poland. (I invite people from the West for a walk in the Polish forest - maybe they will understand something!) Poland and Poles want to live in peace and quiet, we do not want any additional money from anyone, we want to cooperate, compete, exchange experiences and live together in God's way!

Sorry but stating that during soviet domination Poland was developing its industry is a serious misinformation. It was exploited for over 40 years after destructive WW2 as a satellite country of USSR. There was nothing in the country all went to Russia for their 'success'.
@muzyquest Жыл бұрын
Please distinguish industrial base from its industrial productivity and allocation of its profits. PRL was a failure overall, but one has to admit that it provided Poland with solid industrial infrastructure and a basis for further growth. For example, a factory in almost every small town - it's not that common in other CEE countries (of course, most of them bankrupted in 1990s, but in many cases the buildings were soon adapted to modern, more efficient companies, and most of all: human capital remained - skilled workers and a vast network of vocational schools).

I worked on weekends when I was in high school to pay for my expenses. I'm not saying it's good, but thanks to it we have made enormous progress since the 1990s. Poland was poorer than Ukraine 30 years ago...We do not have oil reservoirs, we do not have automotive concerns, but with hard work we are slowly rebuilding this country after wars, the times of partitions and communism.

Personally I would love to have government that would not focus only on GDP growth, but actual increase in quality of life. We need more apartments/houses. They need to be affordable and available for people. We need better education, social care, labor laws and health care. We need better public transport. We need more tolerance and equality. We need secular state. Country might get richer, but it's more important for society to get more wealthy and it has to be distributed relatively fairly. We need to chill out and stop stressing so many people into mental issues. Most people can't handle high stress. We need resources for comfortable life.
