Great video. The boulders look great. Exactly what type of boulders are they and where did get them from?. Brilliant pond. Looks fantastic. Also I thought an intake bay was better for a wildlife pond, to stop newts etc getting pulled into a skimmer and potentially the pump?

The boulders I believe are from mid wales stone, an intake bay is better from a wildlife perspective, however a skimmer is better than a pump in the bottom of a pond. The skimmer is faster to install and you can remove the weir door to allow the wildlife in and out.

We’ve never had a problem with newts getting pulled in to the skimmer. We do on the other hand get several calls a year where we have to remove frogs, toads and newts that have become entrapped in pumps that have been put in the bottom of bare liner ponds that we did not build. I have even seen populations of Daphnia, a small free swimming invertebrate, living in an ecosystem pond with a skimmer.

An intake bay may life a bit easier but is completely unnecessary for a pond that size.

Yes and No, better from a wildlife point of view, however from a maintenance and cost point of view the skimmer is quicker to install and you can remove the weir door to allow the wildlife in and out.

We build a small intake bay but as you know the skimmers are much easier to clean.
