Here is the skinny from a school trained mechanic that LOVES Toyota and LOVES Mercedes: I love Toyota in my personal opinion when people ask me about cars I say that : Toyota Honda and Subaru are probably the best cars money can buy. Not to discount Nissan but I've seen electrical issues with them that plague the brand...Now Mercedes vehicles will essentially run forever so will BMW but DO NOT expect to go problem free for your run. This video here is literally 99.999% accurate as nothing is 100% LOL ..but listen to this guy. Now I currently drive a 2015 4Runner and a 2012 C class sport so I am literally like he's spot on. Now I do believe Mercedes recommended draining oil through the dipstick via a pump as it supposedly provided more of an emptying than the traditional drain plug method. I am old school and I drain oil via the plug. Mercedes are classy cars not so much sporty and aggressive as some BMW models but you will NEVER get away neglecting maintenance on these cars as you might the 'forgiving' Toyota. Plain and simple Mercedes are easy to buy used but the issue is not can you buy one but rather can you AFFORD to maintain it. That is the real decision you need to make before buying a Mercedes, BMW, Porshe, AUDI oh...and especially a Range Rover. Please do your research on yearly Cost-To-Ownership. My last piece of advice I will give to you for free yet it has cost me thousands of dollars over 35 years.....Find yourself a specialist in your area that only repairs Mercedes. It won't be cheap but you'll avoid the dealership which does not have your best interests at heart. If you care to drive luxury then be prepared to pay for luxury but support your privately owned vehicle specialists. More often than not they'll be upfront with you and won't rip you off with unnecessary maintenance. Yes there is such a thing!! I am a blue collar like many others just trying to live and enjoy life simultaneously so I am not promoting any particular business. I like my Toyota and I like my Benz..I fix what I can myself and I have to pay for what I cannot do myself. Such is Life. Being very informed is your best weapon. Ja Wohl. Fahrt mit lust!!!!

What I have seen is if you buy one of these expensive cars like BMW,Mercedes, and Audi you have got to spend a lot of money with the maintenance. Oil changes need to be done sooner than later especially on the models that had heat issues. I saw a video recently by Car Wizard with an Audi with 200k miles I believe it was a 2017. The owner spent the money and documented everything and had a book as thick as a Bible. That is what it takes if you buy one and expect to keep it for a long time. 10:30 Regarding the M156 they upgraded the head bolts in late 2011 so all engines after that had no problem with their bolts. As for premature intake camshaft and lifter buckets wear - true, depending on the oil you run you may end up having to replace the cams and buckets at about 150k km. The final issue is that you'd be wise to replace the fuel injectors after 100k km, as some would get stuck open and hydro lock the engine. If you can dish out the money for the new cams and buckets the engine is indestructible, as they overbuilt everything else -- pistons, conrods and crankshaft. In fact, you can put a supercharger without replacing any of those mentioned.

these are all good engines to run away from. I'm surprised you didn't mention on the Audi 4.2l DI V8, the ticking time bombs are the plastic timing chain guides which Audi thoughtfully decided to put at the BACK of the engine - those can wear out pretty quick if you're on it a lot or get lazy with the oil changes. so, any timing work on those is an engine-out affair, hence the expense. you can catch it before actual engine damage occurs, but the cost is still enormous. everyone loves to peg German cars as unreliable, but all cars are about maintenance - you will get out of them what you put into them. poor engineering is readily identifiable - Nissan CVTs that no longer T, Ford EcoBoosts with the open-deck crackheads, GM V8s with AFM-bent pushrods, Subaru EJ25 single (and ready to mingle)-layer head gaskets, older Acura 5-speed self-consuming automatics, etc. but Porsche and Audi maintenance procedures are often so demonic that many owners simply do not keep up with it, and the subsequent ones are saddled with paying off their deferred maintenance debts. and parts expenses often result in the same for BMW and Mercedes. if you can DIY though, there are plenty of older German panzers around that you can actually work on and get decent parts for cheaper, and those will take you the long haul without costing you any appendages. just a thought - if you look up the list of the top 10 vehicles with the highest mileage ever recorded, the first is a Volvo and the second is a Mercedes. no Japanese cars even made the top 10 despite their excellent overall reliability, but a Silverado, F150, and Lincoln Town Car did.

Having worked for Mercedes for a couple of decades I can honestly say one of the best engines AMG have made is the M156, I have worked on literally hundreds of them and if serviced regularly they are bomb proof, only the very early ones had head bolt issues and they have all been rectified by now, we had a regular customer come in with a S63 that had over 300,000km on the clock, seen hundreds with over 100k on them with little to no issues. Not only that but it’s actually also a incredibly simple engine my modern standards, it’s definitely something I would spend my hard earned on and that’s not from a enthusiast perspective but from a mechanics perspective. The om271 was a absolute piece of sh!t though and I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.
@dgpaliza Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. I own a 2009 C63 with 115,000km on it and have never had any problem with it for the 10 years I’ve had it, with the original head bolts still on. I have a lot friends from the AMG club with even more kms on their M156 and never had any problem. Sure, these issues happen but it only affects a small percentage, imagine more than 40,000 W204 C63 were built, and this number does not include the M156 from ML63 and E63. The only issue with this engine is the higher maintenance cost (fuel consumption and oil changes) compared to Japanese engine but it will definitely always put a smile on your face every time you drive it and hear the exhaust note. People who complain about M156 are the people who have never owned one and people who don’t take care of their cars.

But I do drive the car very little ( mostly in the weekend ), and let it idle for 30-60 seconds before driving it and do likewise before shutting it off ! And of course the oil change is done every year ( once a year as I mostly put 3000km / year on her. I treat it like my baby and always wanted to own one of these cars ! German cars are of great quality and reliability, but in recent years due to ecological restrictions in Europe, manufacturers are forced to make shitty engines in order to meet the harsh emission restrictions.🤷🏻♂️
@powerboatguy2308 Жыл бұрын
You don't have to drive very far for these type of videos if they have Audis and BMWs on the lot as they provide a lot of source material. It is a shame, the cars have nice styling, but they should be leased for a couple of years then turned in.

Lexus, Acura, Infiniti never went to 10k or 12k oil services and they avoided issues. BMW, Audi, MB when 6k oil services are done have near Lexus durability. The hardening seals, brittle chain runners, sludged cam phasers and phaser solenoids all go to 100k or more miles beyond their typical failure points. The longer intervals were pushed by factory paid maintenance coverage and legislation in EU countries. I know less oil handled is "green" but mountains of bad engine parts is not green.

As good as these cars are, and they're reasonably durable, I would NOT keep any of them past the 80k point...especially the Audi, any Audi. Those electrical/elecrtonic issues can drive you INSANE. My brother didn't listen and he took his A6 past 80k and only 10k later, he is facing a horrendous bill approaching $10k CDN. When he told me he has 94k, I just laughed and told him, ten large is a "good start".

As a current Lexus GS owner; I'm looking at trading for a BMW 540i (2017-2020). Considering that the B58 motor is one of the most reliable engines from BMW, do you believe this is a good trade?
@ariesmight6978 Жыл бұрын
Like Mark any mechanic will tell you that. BMW's are mostly plastic. Even under the hood. Plastic is a week material. It also dries out and becomes very brittle. Faster so under the engine hood. Making all of these components. Something the mechanic worries about both initially breaking. As well as additionally breaking.

The B58, the engine in the G30 540i, has been super reliable so far. Most 340i, 440i, 540i, G11 740i, and 840i will be great daily cars and reliable. I think the 540i would be a good option if you’re looking for an upgrade in comfort, driving experience and fun reliability. There are also many BMW forums, reports, and social media examples of how well made the B58 is.
@rncm86 Жыл бұрын
@@ariesmight6978 are the current BMWs with the B58 engines still having issues with plastic parts and materials breaking? From my understanding; BMW addressed the issue by heat shielding the plastic materials.
