I'm really excited to watch this series! Mike is putting so much work into this, for the love of god, PLEASE, put an appropriate set of wheels on this thing. This car deserves so much more than cast, multi-lug, fake splits.

I have never done welding on car panels, but everything I have seen and heard is it is best to use a MIG welder with .030 wire. Way less heat generated when you are tacking and doing your stitch welding. Also a trick I have been told is to have a wet rag near by. As soon as you get done welding put the wet rag on the weld to cool it right away. Nice project. Any thoughts on using golf rallye fenders? I know some people might cringe hearing that you would be cutting up something like that, but it might be a better base to start at.
@ecstuning4 жыл бұрын
MIG welding creates more distortion because there is more material being added. More importantly, MIG welds are significantly harder than a TIG weld, so its more difficult to work with later and more prone to cracking. - Mike

Greetings. Love the build, Awesome wide body. I have a question four you guys, the GTI can compete in Drift formula???? I have been thinking for along time about making a drift car and I have an idea in another VW car to use it to make a drift car. But I can not find details of What Things can change in a FWD Car to be legal to compete in drifting.

Like what you are doing, but man you gotta invest in an air nibbler if you want to make good clean undistorted cuts on those body panels. Cut off wheels produce heat.
@robertkennedy27264 жыл бұрын
The widening of the front makes the drift geometry even worse. It is essentially making the wheelbase seem even shorter and that is no bueno on an already short MK3.

@Devilacme4 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, he had the bmw v8 already laying around so it was a obvious choice. Of course the Audi v8 is great but after all the amount of work needed for the swap would have propably been the same. Neither of those engines does exactly fit easily in to the golf.
