In this video we show how to remove the stock twin turbos from our 2007 BMW 335i and replace them with the Vargas OE Plus Replacement Turbos, including an upgraded 6x6 billet compressor wheel.
BMW N54 stock turbos are known to have a failing wastegates, which can be heard rattling, and failing oil seals, which causes smoke and oil consumption.
This job is fairly time consuming, but very achievable with the right tools, mechanical knowledge, and parts. The most difficult parts of the install are removing the front subframe, installing the silicone turbo inlet pipes, and keeping everything organized. Our video shows how to get it done with relative ease.
Hopefully this video helps with your install and saves an expensive trip to a mechanic. Please leave any questions about the install and we'll try to help.

Ok I've been thinking on buying a 2011 535i but after watching this video, I will continue to save an simply build my mustang and just twin that instead! I love watching dissemble car vids and such but this kinda makes make not want a BMW now. "ok today we are gonna change spark plugs" .... removes the cylinder heads, timing chain and crankshaft

Wow, good content, big effort on this one. I suggest that you put the torque specs in the description too. This is probably the hardest install on an N54 motor. Seriously a jigsaw puzzle of parts. Subsystems he had to remove before the turbos: coolant, suspension, steering, exhaust, intake. Whole lotta stuff going on at one time. This is the best time to take care of everything below the engines cover: replace those worn out E90 control arms, engine mounts, sway bars, higher performing cooling system, radiator, coolant pump/thermostat housing, inlet pipes, intercooler, charge pipe, and down pipes. Watching this video, its an intimidating level of complexity due to the number of subsystems you're dealing with at one time. I am gonna be at this one for a month of weekends with all of the other stuff I need to do at the same time as 'just replace the turbos'.

@@mcgyverb1664 what 4k sounds a bit much, but in general people tend to think its just the parts that are expensive. the shops have salarys to pay their mechanics, for the shops etc. and then its usually not taking apart the part that is broken. sometimes you need to dismantle the half if not the whole engine to get to something and change the tiny part that costs 50 bucks. not like they will tear apart you car for free.
@mcgyverb1664
@mcgyverb1664 5 жыл бұрын
Micke yes, but it makes no sense if small shops are charging way cheaper than the stealership, I found a leaking oil filter housing gasket, and the oil cooler leaking, the stealers wanted me to pay $1000 for that job, I got it done for $100 at an independent shop the gaskets were $39 each, hey bmw are simple vehicles to own, it’s the stealership organization that makes the brand disposable.

Guys, this job really isn't too bad. You work your way up to stuff like this. I used to be scared shitless to change an exhaust on my motorcycle. It was actually like 3 bolts, one clamp, and 20 minutes of work. In the end, I started up the bike, and felt such a rush of adrenaline that I did it correctly, felt no leaks around what I had changed, and the SOUND!! The bike was almost alive, I had accomplished something I thought was hard and scary, and you get that absolute thrill and elation you could never get "paying a mechanic" to do it. Since then, I've slowly done more and more, acquired more tools as I needed them, I do things faster, and by feel, and with less videos and guides on forums. You really have to start small, and at least TRY to fix your car/bike/lawn mower yourself before you grow the confidence to tackle more stuff. It's basically screwing & unscrewing stuff, moving stuff out of the way, lubing parts, staying labeled and organized, having the right tools so it takes 5 minutes to do a task instead of an hour, coding the proper things with a phone or laptop connection to your car, and finally just having faith (and caution) that you're doing it right. Again, it's such a rush and satisfying feeling when you start up the car, see/hear/feel the difference, and know that you did it yourself, saved money, and learned a lot you wouldn't have otherwise. If you're thinking about doing mechanical work yourself, DO IT! (just have a good buddy around, or more money, time, space for the car to lay undrivable, or a daily driver, because yes, it will take longer than expected, and things DO come up, holding back your progress. question is, are you going to be a G and keep pushing forward through it, or give up?)

You're absolutely right! 🙌 That's one of the biggest reasons we have DIY videos. To show people that a lot of these jobs actually aren't as intimidating as they may seem. Obviously a job like this should never be your first, but starting with simple stuff like an oil change can give you the confidence to work up to bigger jobs like this!

qxANGELxp I just finished torquing down the front subframe after starting this DIY in January. I did little here and there whenever I could over the past 3 months, and I’m finally in the home stretch! Before this, it was full suspension install, and before that it was radiator, intercooler, charge pipe, intake. I’m truly moving up on the rungs of the ladder of experience.💪 I resonate with you as in the beginning I was scared to put on a new exhaust. I had an experienced “pro” at an exhaust shop do the install, and he didn’t even do it well - sloppy cutting of the pipes, breaking a bolt, and stripping the threads on my exhaust flange. That’s when I realized maybe I CAN do better and started learning as well as putting faith in myself to work on my car. Yes, I have been a G and it feels great !!

Just got this done at home with the upgraded 17t turbos, this really helped out a lot. Overall took me 3 days about 18-20 hrs to get it done ( this was on jackstands btw so it might be quicker if y’all got a lift). Hardest thing was the tight space because I used jackstands but otherwise if you get all the parts and tools you need before hand, as well as have some experience working on cars, I found it really wasn’t a difficult job at all. However extremely time consuming. Be sure to get the oil pan gasket, water pump and thermostat done at the same time since they will all be accessible.

@@Critical7hinkingit’s really not that difficult I’m doing it right now on jackstands and with no help from anybody other than my dad when there’s a line thats being stubborn, I would say the hardest parts is the subframe and power steering rack, and the lines and bolts that get stuck and stubborn other than that it’s just bolts and nuts and remove things

So I did this on the weekend on jackstands on my 200k+ km Canadian '08 135i. Couple notes: I did this *without* dropping the subframe. YMMV but on the 135i there was "lots" of room. Wiggling the oil / coolant lines did exactly jack... Needed a nice pry bar there. Damn california cars in the video! You need a mid length extended T50 socket on a 3/8 drive to get the manifolds off. It can't be too long because otherwise you won't have room. I used this set: www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/maximum-14-piece-torx-impact-bit-socket-set-0580334p.html#srp You also need a low profile T30 to get the oil feed lines off. There is very little clearance here. I used a T30 bit on a 1/4 bit ratchet. 3/8 electric ratchet was a huge time saver. Takes a while but the instructions provided in the video are excellent. Thanks ECS, you guys got my business for the replacement parts!

@cliffgardner5717
@cliffgardner5717 5 жыл бұрын
Single Turbo is just as much work if not more actually with all the parts you have to relocate and remove for a single turbo. Because most single turbo conversions are top mount on the N54. So everything on top turbo side of motor has to be moved. Also you have to still do all this to just remove the old twin turbo setup. So deff not easier going single turbo.

See, luckily in the area I live there are a bunch of Underground mechanics that have these cars. Matter of fact, most meets 50% of the cars are 335i or 340i 😂. So in my area, they aren’t unique anymore but the best part is there is a huge abundance of people that work on them so Labor is cheap. I got a dude gonna slap my 19T Turbos on for $600 Labor. After doing a few N54 turbos, the process honestly isn't that bad. My first go at it took two days on a AWD sedan model, which means you just have to work around the front passenger axle. Those are the real pains. Other than that, this job isn't TOO bad. It's definitely labor intensive and I charge accordingly for sure lol. I personally think the hardest part of the entire is removal and reinstalling the coolant and oil lines on the turbo. The most annoying of the process is ALL OF THE ENGINE COOLANT GOOD LORD THERES SO MUCH.

Pretty good DIY. I do the job slightly differently whenever I pull front subframes. I leave the control arms/ knuckles bolted up and just remove the strut top bolts, motor mount bolts, and the subframe mounting bolts and pull the whole shebang out as one unit. I have ran into the bolts being seized inside the bushing sleeves (very common on all cars,) and the only way to get them out is to destroy the bushing or blast the bolt out with an acetylene torch. I live in New York, so if you live in a good environment where there is no salt used on the roads you could probably do it this way. Another thing to note is all the suspension stuff needs to be retorqued when preloaded. If your doing this job at home, make sure you do not rotate the steering wheel or shaft with it disconnected or you'll most likely destroy the clock spring. Again, good DIY to a job that is inevitable for anyone who wants to upgrade they're snails or fix the annoying wastegate rattle.
