Nice that you started making videos bro! Ever since I learned how to do the grab and drag that's the only way I inoculate plates now. Great video man! 🙂

This is pretty awesome! After I use the scalpel and blade for doing a transfer I'll take and drop it in to my isopropyl jar to disinfect before I sterilize again ... After doing this a couple times the tip of the blade will get a hook like this and I usually straighten it out on a sharpening stone...Now after seeing this video they're not all going to get reshaped, some are going to keep that hook just for this purpose! Thank You @DichotomousKeys-fg2bu

I have found different brands of #11 blades are different that others, some are more thin tipped than others, you want a fine thin tip.

I kept hearing about the grab and drag then Dr. Ed recommended your vid. The excellent close up camera work and a very understandable explanation of this technique make it look probably easier than it is. Thanks!

the process really is pretty easy , its the verification on the microscope that gives people the most problems, hopefuly ill have a video about that process up soon.

That’s an awesome vid DK thanks! I now see that was using way too much cotton. I also get the deep trenches thing, where spores get dragged behind.. Just ordered a Swann-Morton no7, hopeful again about monos!! 🤩

After working swabs I seriously think prints are far superior due to needing less work to transfer spores to agar. Swabs seem to waste a bit and are one and done mostly. Prints will last for years and can be used many many more times. Idk it's all about what works for you. I'm okay with having both just in case.

Since I’m assuming the blade needs heat before attempting to bend the tip .. are you already using a used blade before ? Or are you still firing up a fresh one out the packet so the blade can be flexible enough to bend still.
@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu
@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu 6 ай бұрын
Even with a fresh blade, a heat cycle or 2 will soften the temper of the tip enough. Some #11 blades have finer longer tips than others, I try to buy the long thin tips also.

@@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu I went to my lab and tried it fresh after I sent that msg.. it didn’t bend fresh but after 1 cycle of sterilizing it bent. Gotta fire it before & after before procedure I guess. Could you propose where you find those tips ? My 11’s are off Amazon

@@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu Went to my lab to test after my msg. No bend fresh but 1 cycle of sterilizing bends it easy. It’s cool , would have to sterilize 2x regardless before & after since tip is getting bent on our work surface anyway. Great strategy 👌 Respect 💯

Hey DK, What brand blades are you using or how are "treating" them? I tried this a few months ago and I kept snapping the tips off of my #11's.
@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu
@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu 10 ай бұрын
I think the heat cycle from the induction sterilizer takes the temper out of the blade allowing it to bend easily. A torch should do the same thing.

@DichotomousKeys-fg2bu I probably just need to make it a little hotter then. Thanks DK.
