Part 12: • Ed Lover on Nas Addres...
Part 1: • Ed Lover: Virgil Abloh...
--------
In this clip, Ed Lover shared his thoughts on some of the biggest debates in hip-hop, starting off with who won the battle between Nas and Jay-Z. Ed explained that he thinks Nas "spanked" Jay-Z, adding that "Ether" was harder than "Takeover," because Nas focused solely on Jay-Z. You can hear more of the discussion above.

The fact that the word Ether became a phrase meaning destroy, obliterated, etc show you how powerful that record was and still is. Hip hop will never see that level of competition like that again to many wack rappers who don't take lyrics seriously anymore.

AsAp LoDoG True indeed both Nas's ether and Jay's The Take Over were classics, legendary hip hop battle. I agree Nas won the battle. However still Nas and Jay battle was done in the true essence of hip hop. Love that those Brothers Nas and Jay ended their beef and became friends and did songs together.

I was there in real time when Jay came at mobb deep and Nas . The Nas Stillmatic freestyle, Jay dropping THE BLUEPRINT. Nas dropping STILLMATIC. I was there. And the battle was so so so BIG for the hip hop community. ....that any rapper who had some shit in his chest against another rapper, immediately got in the studio and took it out of their chest . Because....the 2 greatest were battling each other. People started getting in panic because they thought the battle was going to end off like Pac and biggie. Killing each other. People enjoyed what was happening but at the same time everyone was like....shit. this is going too far. !!!! Nas won because one simple thing....JAY MISTAKE. by responding to ether with a garbage freestyle " super ugly " it sounded like a desperate man .who didn't know what to do under the pressure ether put him through.. thats when hot 97 said .Jay lost . case closed..

Rough history of the back and forth on record Jay and Memph take shots at Nas on What you think of that Nas Returns fire on QB 2001 Jay throws subliminals on come and get me Nas Returns subs on Nastradamus Come and Get me Jay Does Hot 97 Summer Jam screen to prodigy and says Nas dont want it with Hov Then Nas Dops Stillmatic Freestyle which is DOPE and roasts all of rocafella while taking a few shots at Jay, baiting Jay who: Then drops Takeover with the actual verse about nas after only hinting at it during hot 97 THEN Nas drops Ether (contrary to what charla budden and the rest of the Hovengers would have you think Ether was far more FACTUAL than takeover which falsely claimed nonsense like "1 hot album every ten years" at that time Nas' only miss was Nastradamus - which was due to the first huge bootlegging of a highly anticipated album. A ton of great songs that would have been on the album that became Nastradamus ended up on the lost tapes. I AM was also considered a hot album especially at that time. A great deal of heads actually consider it was written to be as good if not better than illmatic especially in street circles due to the all time great storytelling) Jay THEN responds to Ether with Supaugly, and then apologises publicly on Hot 97 (like Nas predicted he would in Ether) which is why it's WIDELY understood that Nas won that lyrical battle EASILY. Nas' first FULL song towards Jay was ETHER Jay's first FULL song towards Nas was supaugly NO ONE SAYS you GOT SUPGA UGLIED NO ONE

That was actually Tupac saying “Fuck Jay-Z” in the intro of Ether. And the reason it took Nas so long to respond was because, he wasn’t going to respond. His brother Jungle pushed him and forced him to respond until Nas finally acquiesced to his encouragement.

@Shawn Brown Think about it, you're mad right now because you know deep down inside, that Jay lost. Now you're bringing up peripheral issues, *most of it made up,* to make yourself feel better for your icon getting smashed. It also explains your need to argue with everyone who disagrees... quite exhausting. But this isn't personal for us. Most of us are huge Jigga fans. But you gotta call a spade a spade... *Jay's mentor tore him a new one.* Sometimes that sorta thing happens.

Great depiction of that era in time and the battle. Ed lover explained exactly why NAS beat Jay. He was saying everything streets were saying about Jay at the time. It's a big reason HOV stepped back for awhile because people were tired of hearing Hov talk money all the time and disrespecting women. Only problem with Ether is that NAS refuses to perform it till this day. Imagine if KRS-ONE never performed the Bridge is over how that would've affected his legacy. With Nas, imagine how much bigger his shows would be if 20k or more screaming fans waiting to hear the gunshots and recite all the lyrics to Ether. Nas wouldn't need to make another record; just perform that record for the next 20 years.
@bobt9705
@bobt9705 2 жыл бұрын
Difference is that Nas legacy was already stamped without ether. Krsone most likely wouldn't exist if it weren't for the Bridge is ova. Krs even admitted this himself. Ether just enhanced already a legends career.

@@bobt9705 it was but it wasn't because your only as good as your last album. Nas would not be as revered if had not battled Jay-Z and won.
