I'd be interested to see your reaction to "You Need Me I Don't Need You" captured in the Live Room. I find that to be a very talented and innovative performance personally, and its a good reflection of one of the best things about Ed, namely his use of loop pedals in the live setting.

Not saying that today's pop artists aren't talented but they don't make anything new. Creativity is done in music nowadays cause when I hear songs on top 50, I hear similar beats, similar idea, similar way of singing and they do have similar videos. Pop artist runs after the audience nowadays rather than what they feel is great. Every female singer must seem sexual cause that's what the audience want, every male singer must focus on teenage love in his songs cause that's what teenage girls seek for so I don't blame the modern musicians as a whole but the audience who seek for those songs. There are great songs out there but they just don't come into the limelight because majority prefers songs about hoes, teenage love, sex and all which then leads to making those good talented singers dive into what majority want. It's a never ending cycle, every modern musician is just a sell-out and it's not only their fault.

You're right to an extent, there has been a homogenous nature in the pop music industry for a while. The biggest reason those times seem more genuine to us is because the true crap died out while the timeless tunes lived on. Music has become more diverse and varied, but definitely not in pop in the last 10 years. A lot of the diversity you're seeing is probably from the internet revolution if I had to guess.
@shushant1757
@shushant1757 7 жыл бұрын
You're right in your own way and yes music has always been diverse but not in modern pop. The diverse music videos are something you'll never see on the top 100 or 200 charts. It's the same concept that makes big fuzz and sweeps away all the prizes which has pressed the creative music industry to the bottom. This has resulted in artist being a sold out and take the path to success like Maroon 5 of today.
@shushant1757
@shushant1757 7 жыл бұрын
By "music videos" I meant the actual music that goes along with the video. The video quality will def get better overtime but I don't listen to music to enjoy the artistry in the music video but to enjoy the artistry inside the song. And yes we have greater room for artistic diversity but just in terms of videos not music in itself. If I make you listen to 2 EDM songs by different artists then you won't be able to recognize which is played by whom and that's what worries me. There's no unique voice in modern music. They use similar concept and everything that I mentioned in the main comment. and not all but most do have similar videos. Majority of hip-hop song will have fat ass girls, cars and cash. Majority of modern teenage pop will have a guy fighting over for the girl. I didn't clear it but I meant that the creativity part was done in music not the music video (although, as I mentioned, you can expect what the music video is gonna deliver MOST OF THE TIMES). My large focus here's on the dead creativity in music not the music video. I think you got me now.

Ed Sheeran's music isn't exactly my cup of tea either. He has had a few songs that tug at my heart strings but because his lyrics are so specific, it's hard for me to identify with the story he's conveying. Plus, I usually listen to music to have a good time, not have a good cry.

Its all the same thing Drums are a very VERY big part in music The kick and snare is very important But modern day music just uses the snare and kick The snare can be replaced with claps Then you have a piano for the sad songs Obviously a bassline but they are kind of removing it Also a ukelele sometimes or an acoustic/classical guitar And the vocalist needs to look good and be cool

he is not a country artist though mate. im not a fan of his music, but he is a 100% genuinely very good live performer from shows ive saw on tv and online. but again, absolutely not trying to be in any way a country artist. when he started he was promoted as a folky type singer songwriter. he now has full band type songs, which are obviously geared towards getting him in the charts. he also recently took a year or so out, during which he went and worked in a local thrift store. ive never heard or read a bad word about the chap . seems to be a genuinely nice fella whos just doing what he does. he also exclusively uses his own signature small bodies Martin(i think) acoustic. hes not an electric player.

I commend you for reaching a positive assessment on such a bland song both lyrically and musically. Personally I think it's important to acknowledge the importance of the Taylor Swifts and Ed Sheerans of the world, because not all people think on the same waves and therefore metal is not for everyone. Just like listening to this song made me want to submerge my head in a bowl of jello... you get my drift. I think of pop music as mostly cute and cartoonish disney channel tunage. From the mutual metalhead stand point I genuinely respect that you found nice things to say about a song that's not your cup of tea; especially as a popularizing public figure. Hats off to you, man!

Disney uses pop that are pleasing for children. The massive bulk of pop now is not digestable for any person with something remotely resembling a brain. Keeping that in mind I should say Ed is a genius. Making music out of a genre so shitty, at present. Literally more poop than pop in the genre now.

Would just like to say that I like most of your insights in your 'reaction' videos and I agree with a lot (not all) of your opinions. One thing that stood out to me in this video though is how perspective of the listener / artist can have such a strong impact on what imagery a song can give you. What highlighted it for me are your comments about his 'country road' cliché lyrics to invoke feelings of nostalgia. As somebody who lives in the UK that line has a completally different meaning to me. Country music isn't really a thing over here, we call it 'country and western' and as a genre it has no traction in any of our mainstream markets. in the UK a 'country road' also brings to mind a very specific type of road, which are very common outside of motorways and larger towns. They are typically only a single lane wide, don't have any lighting and are very twisty with constant turns and bends. They quite often also have hedges or drystone walls on either side of them which make it very hard to see if anything is coming around the corner in the opposite direction to you so they can be pretty dangerous. Despite being such tricky roads they very rarely have any speed restrictions other than the national speed limit which means that about 60% of all fatal car accidents in the UK happen on these roads. so for me that line brings up the feelings of recklessness everybody used to have as a young teenager. that way that you almost felt immortal, when death was more of a concept than something that you recognise as part of everyday life. It makes me curious as to what the artist was aiming for when he wrote it as he is a British singer, but the market in the USA is a lot larger so was he targeting it more the american people? i don't know but again I just find it interesting how the perspective of the listener can make the same line have different meanings. Dunno if you will ever read this giant wall of text but I just thought that as a musician yourself you may find my observation interesting, who knows. here is an example of what I think of as a country road (if a bit more picturesque than any I have driven on personally) : www.carrentals.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/canstockphoto17833412.jpg

The dude comes from Framlingham, Suffolk, England. 3:46 That castle you see there is Framlingham Castle. I've been there a couple of times, it is big, impressive and full of history. Also, if you've seen the country roads in Suffolk, they an be very narrow. So narrow, in fact, that it is down right dangerous to speed without crashing into someone round a tight corner.

I'm a fan of Ed Sheeran. I kind of liked some of his music then took my GF to see him in concert - big stadium arena tour he did with just him, his guitar and creating loops - blew me away. The guy has genuine talent. He's not country - he's more folk, but he's also pop, and wishes he was a rapper too. The Hobbit song (can't remember it's name right now) is probably my favourite having seen him do it live and the production on it was just awesome.... Ignore Shape of You - it's not representational of him as an artist over-all - it's just a pop hit and it's meant to be a pop-hit. He has those but he has his more deep songs, and his singer/songwriter songs... I think the reason I like him is that he's not just like every other pop artist out there and mixes it up quite a bit.

I'm sure as a musician Ed was aware of the overuse of country roads in country music but as a Brit I was clueless on the matter - I can identify with a lot of the things in this song because I had a similar childhood and the shift from my current urban setting to the country lanes when I go visit family and friends where I grew up is the specific trigger that gets me remembering it all. I mean, outside of London it's basically impossible to grow up not experiencing them before shutting yourself inside a city for a career when you leave school. I doubt by this point Ed was writing just for a British audience but I suspect this song is more likely to resonate with us

Hi Mike. Erich The "Bolt" here, absolutely love your style in reacting. That is why I subscribed to your channel. I would love to see your reactions to a couple of singers I came across over the past year or so. I realise you are not really into the high voice stuff, but the two singers I will mention are definitely worth a listen: I'm only assuming you have not heard these guys prior. 1. Dimash Kudaibergen. He is 24 years old and from Kazakhstan, south of Russia, Nth west of China. He was in a singing competition in 2017 called I am a singer. His first song on the show was: SOS d'un terrien en detress. Many others he sung are great too. Opera 2, Late Autumn, and some covers. Show must go on by Queen and All by myself Eric Carmen I think. I am sure you won't be disappointed. It's his voice range that is so amazing. I think his lowest recorded note was an F2 and his highest a D8. He also sings in many languages, Kazakh, Russian, Chinese, French, English, that's all I can think of at the minute. 2. Marcelito Pomoy. He is 34 years old and from the Philippines, he is renowned for his ability to sing tenor and soprano. A song called the Prayer and Power of love are worth a listen. You are obviously into the music scene so I hope you will at least have a look at these singers. Let me know either way. I do a bit of youtubing but haven't seen you until now. Just hope you are still in action. Regards Erich The "Bolt"

If you did more research, you would know that Ed Sheeran initially wrote Shape of You with other songwriters for a different artist. He was initially going to give the song to someone else, but the record label said he should keep it

My girlfriend loves Ed Sheeran, he is literally talking about a castle in Suffolk, which is where he grew up 👍🏻 another interesting thing is that when he says "driving at 90" he actually can't drive and got a message from the police for the lyric because that is about 30mph over the speed limit

Ed does have his drivers licence now. He hadn't driven a car before, when he had to drive around the race track on the Top Gear show.

I'm surprised you haven't heard Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud;" it's his only song that I knew until I also started hearing "Shape of You" on the radio. The bassline of said song sounds like a Marvin Gaye song.

Ed Sheeran is an absolutely amazing musician in my opinion. He's a great composer and has a particular way with words. His live performances are just amazing and he's also an amazing guy, seems super humble to me.

Music is not words. However to many people music is art and the artistic meaning of a song is emphasised by the lyrics. A lot of songs are heavily enhanced by the lyrics artistically. For example a lot of Dream Theater's Images and Words album heavily resonates with me through the lyrics as well as the music (the song as a whole).

While I get that his music might not fit the taste of many, I highly recommend that you check out his live performances. it's really amazing what one man can do with just a guitar and a loop pedal. His lyrics also have lots of substance (small bump, the A team, give me love etc) and he's one of the few performers today who sounds great live. I'm glad you liked castle on the hill!

Despite me admiring Ed as possessing a unique talent, I still consider this to be a great fair, intelligent, impartial review; I'd love to know what this guy considers to be "great" music. As a guess, I reckon he rates Green Day's American Idiot album to be great music, and so do I.
