NOTES: The young man in the video is Sekine-san's son. It's a family business and he's the owner of the store. He gets help from local kids to plant the seeds so it's not just him out there :P He didn't use any known pesticides and there were some beetles and bugs in there but not many. This is the thing about Japan. Every region big and small has unique products. China needs to do this in a much better way somehow. Because of the Cultural Revolution, this type of unique characteristics for each town is lacking. Not totally lacking, but the way the Japanese do this is totally a game changer. It's the attitude and respect that is hard to nurture. This is what localized regional marketing is all about. Watching your video shows how much respect for culture japan the people have nurtured. It's part of our the Japanese do things, and with globalization in most of the world, Japanese is truly going to stay unique.

Are you kidding? Corporate American has raised destroying local character into an art form. Check out the recent history of Dublin (Texas) Dr. Pepper. There's more money to be made by homogenizing and commodifying than the reverse. Plus, I hardly think Edamame is unique. Soybeans are perhaps the most widely grown crop in the world.

4 bucks for a packet is pretty expensive. In Sikkim we have a smaller variety of Edamame and it tastes really good. Farmers sell them boiled and it's really cheap but seasonal. Thanks so much for another great high quality episode. You always put so much effort and thoughts in your videos it's inspiring and admirable.
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN7 жыл бұрын
Lin Yiling you're right that it's not cheap but the cost of living and growing produce in Japan is quite high compared to India so we have to go with the market. They're SOLD OUT FAST at this price :p I'd love to try the ones in Sikkim! I wonder how they compare in taste.

Yay! Finally a traditionally "Only in Japan" style video! I love this style of video you make and that is what brought me to this channel originally. The Live and Vlog style videos are alright but I am a purest and love this style. I love the educational/informational value about Japan and Japanese culture shown in this format. I know you have been doing a lot more of the other style videos over the past few months and I have watched what I can (Live is hard to catch due to time differences). I know it takes a lot more time and effort to make this style vs. the Vlog style or Live videos but the quality in these is far above the quick and dirty Vlog style. Thanks for keeping these kinds of videos in your repertoire! p.s. I am a hamster style Edamame eater, too!

Fantastic insight about this wonderful bean John. So I've learnt that soya beans are the 'adults' of edamame and never knew there were so many varieties, thought there was just the one.
