Japanese Vending Machines combine technology with convenience.
Now, let's take that to the next level - THE VENDING MACHINE RESTAURANT
★ No staff at all
★ It's super clean
★ Retro machines
★ It's fast, cheap and fun!
Revisit this place in 2019 here with me ▶︎ • Japanese Vending Machi...
This is Jihankishokudo 自販機食堂 (Automat Diner) located in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture. The owner wanted to make a place where anyone can go to get a meal and have fun! He certainly succeeded.
The food vending machines:
The soba, udon and ramen vending machine
* Chashu-men (with meat) ramen and tenpura udon
330 to 400 yen
The toast sandwich vending machine
* Anko & Cheese or Italian toast sandwich
250 yen
The hot burger vending machine
* Cheeseburger, Curry Burger or Tar Tar Meat Sauce Burger
300 yen
There's also an old Coca-cola bottle vending machine, a cupnoodle machine, a vending machine with store souvenirs and some gachapon machines.
What was most impressive was that the restaurant was super clean.
There's no staff so people clean up after themselves recycling and wiping up where they sat and ate.
Where is Jihankishokudo?

I'm really fascinated by how polite Japanese people are, if such a thing was in my country. The vending machines would've been thrown on the ground or broken and they would get free cola even though it is cheap and they got money. And everything would be a mess. Even just the thongs and plates would be stolen. And people would probably sleep there. FOR NO REASON. just because they can.

I think what appeals to me the most about Japan is how (at least from what I see) very disciplined they are. It's too amazing (sadly for us) that the restaurant can be THAT clean without even any staff present. Heck, in other parts of the world, even restaurants with staff still aren't so clean lol. I remember during a FIFA World Cup, Japanese visitors who came to cheer for their team, cleaned up after themselves in stadium. That's how impressive they are.

Even though Japanese vending machines are high tech, what impresses me even more is that among the new shiny high tech ones, they also still have a bunch of older ones from the 70's and 80's, that are so well maintained they still work. Proof not only that they're made well but that the Japanese are very respectful and don't vandalise things.

+jeffzalonka You're right on that - I'm part Japanese (grandparents live there) and have attended a few weeks of school way, way back in 5th grade. I can't remember if it was daily or every other day, but we would mop and clean the floors, desks, chalkboard, etc. for about 20 minutes when classes were almost over. During lunch, the students would volunteer to serve food for their class, and had to wear plastic coats and shower caps to keep everything clean. Definitely a culture that values being neat and tidy

None of the food looks particularly enticing to be honest but the general idea of the vending machine restaurant is interesting. In most other countries, it would probably not work. Miscreants would vandalise the place, steal the furniture and use it as a drug den but the Japanese are so clean, orderly and respectful of the law that they make it work. Man, I love the Japanese.

See in Japan the owner does not have to leave anyone there to watch it and the customers completely clean up behind themselves so that the next guess can have a clean place to eat. Here in America our people would leave there thrash on the table, not wipe the table off leave anything they drop on the floor on the floor and I am willing to bet it would take no more than 4 hours for someone to vandalize one of the machines. I am ashamed behind the way the majority of Americans behave.

This is cool. I'm sure it's not as great quality as Japan's restaurants but it looks like fun and decent quick food. Unfortunately it wouldn't work where I live in America because of sloppy and uncaring people who would trash the place in a few days. So many awesome things are plausible when you live in a society as peaceful, orderly, polite, and clean as Japan.
@TheSaneHatter
@TheSaneHatter 8 жыл бұрын
We actually DID have restaurants like this in America once: as the name of the diner says, it was called an "Automat." They were quite popular during the Depression, when they allowed a lot of people to get a small meal for a nickel. (Marilyn Monroe mentions them in "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend," too.) However, they lost popularity after WW2, and were largely gone by the 70's. It does make sense that the Japanese would hold on to the concept, though: ti probably came in with the occupying troops, and they've got the vending-machine technology to make it work!
@Zauchi
@Zauchi 8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Hentschel that's quite interesting as I didn't know America used to have stores like this. Probably wouldn't be cost effective to work today in America (or most countries) though as you would have to employ staff to run it... cause lets face it, all the machines would be broken into and the food and money will be gone by the next day. lol
@TheSaneHatter
@TheSaneHatter 8 жыл бұрын
Zauchi What did it in was inflation: while it only cost a nickel to use them at first, it didn't stay that way, and the machines were no longer convenient to use, if you couldn't pay with small change. Competition from modern fast-food joints didn't help, either. But this *might* be a convenient way to run a coffee shop . . . .

+Nick Hentschel , Where I work they recently started to install refrigerated and frozen food vending machines in the breakroom areas. We have microwave ovens in the breakroom areas so you can heat the food up if you want. I used to go with my mother to the University of Chicago Hospital and they had an extensive set of vending machines in the basement break area. Lots of canned items with pull tops. There was some sort of conventional oven you could use to heat up the cans. Canned stews, pastas, fruit cocktail, etc. Also one of the first microwave ovens to heat up other items that were not packed in metal cans. I would like to have the real MREs sold in the vending machines. Since we are a government agency that should be possible somehow.

MANY years ago they had restaurants called Automats in the USA. These were kinda faux vending machines since freshly made dishes such as sandwiches, pies and hot foods like soups, veggies or salads were set in boxes with clear doors. Prices were labeled clearly and you deposited the amount and the door unlocked. Cooks replaced items behind the wall of "vending machines" as needed. Cheap, fresh and fast food for office workers! Sadly these Automats went out of business and only a display is in the Smithsonian. I remember one as a 5 year old and thought it was fun to put coins in to pull out a really nice treat when traveling!

Perhaps if American parents took their parental responsibility seriously in being the primary teacher of their children the world would certainly be a better place. Today people have the mentality it's the governments job to raise their kids, along with feeding them (breakfast, lunch and weekend take-home meals in certain areas ) providing their healthcare, driving them to school, and providing housing.
