Let's travel to a valley in the Japanese alps in Nagano to get some organically grown wasabi from the farm! Just how is wasabi grown?
Daio Wasabi Farm is one of Japan's largest and is a great place to find out - and try wasabi cuisine!
There are few produce directly associated with Japan.
Wasabi is one of the most widely known and the flavor is found more and more in snacks because of it's spicy kick.
It's also used in sushi, mixed in the soy sauce.
There is a big different between the processed wasabi found in some restaurants and the fresh kind which is traditionally ground on a shark skin grater and collected. The color and smell. The texture and taste.
Why does fresh wasabi cost so much?
It takes between 12 to 18 month to grow one and there is no telling what size it will be when pulled from the ground.
The wasabi needs to be in the shade and have constant fresh water. The minerals from the melted snows of the Japanese alps surrounding Daio Wasabi Farm are perfect to make the worlds most delicious wasabi.
What else can you do at the wasabi farm?
You can hike around the beautiful area and also grab a bite to eat in the food plaza. They have:
Wasabi beer
Wasabi ice cream
Wasabi burger
Wasabi don
Wasabi juice
Wasabi wine
Wasabi leaf salad
Wasabi croquet
and yes ... just plain wasabi!
This is wasabi heaven!

I love fresh wasabi, I remember the first time I had it and was surprised to find that it's really not spicy at all like the processed kind. Shizuoka also makes great wasabi and I am thinking of doing a video on that region. Thanks so much for this video as I had no idea that Nagano makes wasabi.

I bought a little wasabi plant in a pot from Borough market a number of years ago. Over the years I have repotted it and now it's a big strong winter plant. Every summer it fades and gets eaten by caterpillars or, most probably, slugs but as the temperature drops towards winter it grows back better than ever. I've not eaten from it yet, or tried to propagate it.....but I will 😊

I must say, the precision and effort in your videos are top notch. It's informational, the voice is great, and it's straight to the point. You're keeping them professional, which, I would assume is tough to do based on the recent trend in youtube videos. Normally consisting of: 1. Talking loud 2. Cringy Moments 3. Forced Laughter 4. Unknowingly degrading their own dignity. Anyways, regardless of that list up there, thank you for keeping it up.

Frederick König Nice combo! I had to Google Emmentaler Cheese and found it to also be called Swiss Cheese in the US. I think the wasabi can bring out the flavor it certain foods and some cheeses is a good example of that. Thank you! I'm going to try it as soon as I can find Emmentaler cheese in Japan. -John

WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN What? Emmentaler is called Swiss Cheese in the US? There are so many different cheeses here in Switzerland like the Appenzeller cheese, the Gruyere Cheese, the Tilsiter cheese, eg. If you like cheese and if you would be here I do recommend to you to try all different kind of Swiss cheeses. They are so おいしい!It is like all Japanese eat only sushi... I am so surprised!

At first my mom was not really like wasabi, she thought it's spicy and shocking when eating. But now she gets used to it and totally loves it. We always have some little packs of wasabi paste in the fridge. And my mom always eats seafood with it as a dipping sauce. I can eat wasabi but not really into them. I think it's a spice that you hate at first and hesitate to try but when you get used to, you'll totally love it

There are several kinds of wasabi in Japan. In the video, wasabi plants are growing in the shallow pure water river. They are good quality but very expensive and keeping freshness is difficult after grating. This type wasabi is usually used at expensive Sushi shop or fine dining. I always use powder type wasabi because it is easy to use at home. It is very cheap and reserving is easy. After mixing the small quantity with a small amount of water and we use for Sashimi or Sushi easily.

I hate wasabi, but I love spicy foods, it's the taste that gets me. Do we have real wasabi in the US? I know I can buy it in a jar or a sauce container, but not fresh. I'm wondering if it's real or of they just mix horseradish and other ingredients to make it resemble wasabi. I wonder if Japanese restaurants in the states use the fake wasabi?

Noslack412 I recently looked it up too, and apparently it is indeed horseradish mixed with mustard. I wonder if real wasabi is even spicier. I'm not a big fan of its taste (fake one anyway), but it's very interesting to see the effort that goes into it. They probably use the fake one too, the price would have to go up quite a bit if they had to import real wasabi. I'm guessing most people don't even know the truth about it.

stfn112 It's has a wider flavor and isn't as edgy (hot) as the "fake" one... It just tastes better overall and way more "balanced"... Honestly... If I could decide between Real and Fake Wasabi, I would always decide for the real one...

Jupp, even in Japan most of the wasabi is fake, only the high end places has the real stuff because it is so expensive with the growing conditions needed and slow growth.

In Lebanon you can choose what kind of wasabi you want. If you want the fake wasabi, it’s free. But if you want real wasabi, it’s 25$ and you need to eat it quickly because it looses its flavor in 20min.

Very very happy to see some more videos from you! You do well in presenting what the video is about and you do your best in pronouncing the words right, which is a huge boost in view-ability imo! (im allergic to mispronunciations, you dont get a 100/100 but you are the best iv seen on youtube that isnt born in japan!). And thanks to your videos me and my wife had a blast in Tokyo last year and we even visited the same Gachapon store you featured in an earlier video :D
