I am so deep down this rabbit hole with you. I have realized that the most commonly used stuff where quality matters is worth having a dedicated tool. For me, it is pocket knife, scissors, knipex plier wrench, driver. Fill in the gaps with a multi tool. Recently tried to use my little driver with gloves on and couldnt get traction so am now looking at a new one. Great timing. Thanks

I commented a few months back but like many my EDC is constantly evolving. After looking at, and trying drivers designed specifically for EDC, folding or keychain, and even thinking outside the box and trying bike multitools, I've come to the conclusion that the best solutions are already made by established tool manufacturers. For example there's a Snap-on reversible magnet driver, about the size of a lighter, with a pocket clip. Would work with regular 2 inch bits as well as the double ended bit it's supplied with. Klein Tools make a couple of 8 in 1 variants which are a bit bigger but still smaller than the Steelman. A couple of people in the comments section have pointed out the Picquic Pic which seems pretty pocketable too. I can't get that model over here in the UK but I hadn't heard of Picquic before and I will buy one of their models for at home and more out of curiosity as don't own anything which is made in Canada. PB Swiss make a compact driver with onboard bit storage, again a bit big for the pocket but not bigger than the Steelman. I've settled on the Wera 813 handle/bit driver, about the size of a Bic lighter too so it sits nicely in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Sometimes I carry it with a couple of 2 inch bits, other times with small bits and a 2 in extender so I have the option of using it as a stubby. All of the above have better ergonomics than the pricey EDC Big Ideas Designs drivers and there are no quality concerns, they're just smaller versions of products made by reputable tool manufacturers, made in N. America or Europe. Another approach is to look for a mini ratchet which has a bit holder in the end of the handle, so it can be used as an inline driver as well. There are some made for cyclists, like the Topeak pocket rocket. I have one which is the size of a Swiss Army Knife, the Sealey mini ratchet, also branded Sabrecut. Then there is a really tiny one, about 2 inches long which was reviewed on this channel, made by the Taiwanese company 711L. The mini ratchets don't have ergonomic handles like the above examples of bit drivers but they are still better than most drivers made specifically for EDC, and you have the added feature of using the ratchet where accessibility is an issue.

I absolutely love the Milwaukee fastback. I thought that because it has plastic scales on top of a metal frame it would be cheaper than its predecessors, but I am a big fan of its design and functionality.
@Rottwiler44
@Rottwiler44 2 жыл бұрын
The plastic is surprisingly durable. Had a buddy of mine using it and dropped it about 20’ out of a lift, took it like a champ. The only bad thing that happened was I lost the bit, which wasn’t a huge deal.

Harbor Freight recently dropped a 1/4 ratcheting bit driver with a flex head. I believe its called the Icon locking flex head ratchet, or something to that sort. It also has the ability to be used as an inline bit driver and as a t-handle. Definitely recommend looking into it!

That shuffle DIY knife is solid. I keep one in my "junk drawer" and that screwdriver gets used probably more than any others I have just because its conveniently located. The knife blade is short but has a big "belly" or whatever you want to call it so it still can do a lot of cutting. Mine pretty much only sees amazon packaging tape, but it works great for that too! I've seen that milwaukee knife recommended enough times that I'm definitely gonna grab one the next time I'm in HD. Seems perfect to throw in my apron.

The Kershaw Select Fire is a perfect blend between the two. It's a similar design to the Milwaukee, but with a traditional blade that's larger than the Shuffle, plus the bit storage in the Fire feels more secure than in the Shuffle. I usually keep the Kershaw in my pocket, desk, or bag, and the Milwaukee in my toolbox.

For my daily use case, the Gerber Armbar Drive is EVERYTHING I want in a EDC multi tool. Only gripe is a lack of pliers or tweezers but those would be items I used the least anyways. When it first came out, I ordered one right away cause I never thought a tool could check all the boxes for the tool necessities plus form factor for me. Literally perfect. I’d use the Leatherman Skeletool as my main but scissors are more important for my daily use case than pliers, and the Skeletool has some heft to it.

I just want a bit screwdriver version of those cylindrical hex key multitools. Key features is that the flipped out driver centers itself with the handle, the handle is more or less round, and every bit is in it's own socket, ready to go and no need to fiddle around with swapping bits.

Next up precision screwdriver kits? As someone who does phone repairs here and there, those come in clutch! I’ve a wallet type one that did me good for ages. Recently bought a phone repair kit the size of two of my hands, but it’s too big. Got a new one, those trending grey kits with a sliding door access to the whole kit, looks like thst pen driver. Perfect for me paired with a mini multitool and a couple plastic pry tools. I used to do repairs in school during lunchtime, now I’ve developed the rep in my college - people bring me their phones, tablets and often even laptops for me to repair any day so I need to be ready. I’m cheaper than those store repair shops because I don’t pay rent for a place. I can do it anytime anywhere as long as I have a table and dust free environment. Pretty cool side job/hobby.

Awesome review of some innovative tools. 👍👍 Those 4mm wide pry tools look amazing. I was on a job many years ago where I pretty much had a Craftsman right angle mini ratchet screwdriver in my hand 8 hours a day for 9 months. I still count on that little guy for a lot of things. But I recently picked up a Topeak bike tool kit with a right angle ratchet, and that has an in-line option. That little ratchet, a 3 inch extension, and an Altoids Smalls tin full of bits all fit in my watch pocket nicely. I added a Wiha 1/4 hex to 4mm adapter to the mix, and I now have one driver for everything from 0.8mm pentalobe and 1mm flat, all the way to T25 and #3 Phillips.

I EDC milwaukee's stubby 8 in 1 ratcheting screwdriver with a 6" bit extension. its ultra durable, ratchets, and you can reach just about anywhere with it. I'ts not exactly something I would carry to the grocery store, but it can reasonably be carried in a pair of cargos, or any backpack. On the Job it works with everything in my tool bag, and the extension is super handy on a drill.

This is a great video. A good alternative to the RUNOI bike tool is the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX. There are other variations but that one is the least bike specific. That is 100% what RUNOI based their design on for the ratcheting tool.

I ended up making my own EDC screwdriver because I could not find a screwdriver on the market that fit my needs. I wanted the 4mm micro bits, and I liked the design of the Hoto, but only about half the bits included are ones I want, and they are proprietary double-ended bits so I wouldn’t be able to carry the ones I need. My goal was a full set of inch and metric hex, select torx, and Phillips/flat bits. I ended up 3D printing a design similar to the Hoto but about the length of a pen that holds 24 standard 4mm bits and takes a pen insert as well, unlike the Hoto. I’ve been very happy with it so far but still working out a few issues, and planning to share the files when I’m fully happy with it. I’m planning to add features like a metal bit holder (although the 3D print has been fine as I can heat gun it back into shape when it starts to wear out), and a way to use a lever for increased torque.

I'll get the HOTO too. It has a permanent %35 off coupon in Amazon. And the Worksharp Mini. Too good not to have. For edc, I also like the PB Swiss stubby bit driver with bit storage, and MichaelPro ratcheting stubby bit driver with bit storage. I also got the SATA 11 in 1, it is kinda like the Victorinox you showed. But it is very heavy and slippery, so not that great.

I'd love to see which tools (if any) work with 1/4" double-ended bits. Those don't have standardized sizes so finding drivers that work with them is a struggle but carrying 2x as many bit heads is so useful for unexpected situations. The Leatherman flat bits are so, so easy to carry and the Wiha Ultra bits are the same length and much, much tougher, but in both cases I need an additional bit adapter to use them. :(

Honestly the only pocket screwdriver I ever carried was one of those old school breast pocket flatheads with the magnet on top. Still carry it at work cause the magnet controls the switch on my hydrant flow meter. Otherwise I never really thought about a pocket screwdriver until I watched some of these vids, and after I switched my Bond for a Curl I immediately missed the long reach phillips. So I picked up a Picquic "The Pic" for $7 that fits in my watch pocket beside a bic lighter.

I can't find that one in the UK unfortunately but I will probably buy a Picquic stubby for at home, seems pretty good and I like the fact it's made in Canada. I have the Wera 813 which fits in the same place besides a lighter, and it's about the same size as the lighter. Works great with 2 in bits, or a 2 in bit extender and small bits so I have the option of using it as a stubby.

I have been carrying the Country Comm driver for years now. I also carry the County Comm titanium adjustable wrench. It allows me to put a bit more torque on the screws of the driver. I don't recommend doing it often since who knows how much abuse the clip screws can take, but when it's needed, it works great. My only complaint is that the 6in titanium wrench is loose. I'm not really a fan of it, to be honest but it's the lightest for it's price. I'm doing my best to cut down on weight since I bike everywhere and I like to carry *mostly* full sized tools. There's a titanium multi tool/worm drive wrench I want to get soon to replace the CC wrench if it's less loose.

That one, the power torque, the Topeak, VIM, Toptul, Mac, Facom, USAG, Blackhawk, WURTH , Dean, KS Tool, and many many more of these thumb wheel bit ratchets marked REVERSE GEAR are all made by HI-FIVE in Taiwan. I'm trying to find a good affordable source for the Toptul CHEV 0811 here in the US. I have the Vim locking flex head that KS Tool and WURTH also offer, but it turned out to be longer. The Toptul CHEV 0811 is shorter and more like a flex head version of the GM power torque that I keep in my leatherman accessory pocket sheath next to my Leatherman Bond.

Whoe I just looked up like basically every option and had a lot of that same thoughts. I settled on fixit sticks. I needed standard bits and very small and pocketable. It’s crazy how hard to find that combo is in the sense that there should be a ton of cheap options but it’s mostly obscure or boutique things. I also have a custom driver made by machindedbyhand on Etsy that I like a lot as well as an extra cylinder for more bits. More options worth mentioning that didn’t make the video: the super small wera (I think it’s the 843?), mininch tool pen, Wheeler Multi-Driver Tool Pen, James brand cache River, bitzblade, Silca T-ratchet, wolftooth driver, mecarmy SGD1, CRKT pocket driver, CRKT driver roll, screwpop, sabercut mini driver, laser tools 8244, eos screwblaster, Titan 16091, dowl-it aluminum driver handle, gerber ambar slim, vital carry bolt action driver. A plot if folks seem to mention the “ring doorbell screwdriver” a lot for edc as well. There were a few others I saw when searching around but I forgot to bookmark them. I keep the ambar slim on the coin pocket of my pants and it’s the fist thing I reach for. If the issue needs something else I grab the fixitsticks. Because of what I do for work I keep lots of bits on me, so I usually have 3 pill containers with torx, hex, and precision bits with 1/4” shafts but it’s worth noting there is a 1/4” to 4mm adapter that is nice to have if you want one driver but a mix of precision and standard bits. There’s also a lot of fixit sticks ratcheting clones popping up for about $20. I bought a couple of them and they seem to work great. They generally come in a kit with a ratchet, 3 extensions, and 24 bits. I have the “ker 30-in-one” and “KBCSUN 24-in-1 ratcheting precision screw driver” but the shank size is standard 1/4. The Ker seems more heavy duty but you have to flip to the other hex insert side for forward and reverse, and might be prone to rust, the kbcsun (also branded by limoruns) is aluminum and a single side insert with a lever for changing directions.

I'm personally a big fan of the Victorinox bit set with the L shaped bit wrench. It's such a simple design, but just works. I've tried the ratcheting version that Victorinox also offers, but I much prefer the L wrench instead.

I own and enjoy the Kershaw 1920 select fire multi tool pocket knife. It's very similar to the DIY shuffle except it is a full size pocket knife it carries 4 different standard bits and the bit driver extends. It's a really nice tool but you don't hear people talk about them much. I've heard about the shuffle DIY from several different EDC reviewers but never the Kershaw select fire multi tool. It comes in 2 different colors that are also the blade design. The blue handle version the blade is part serrated and the black handle version is full non serrated blade. They're pretty cheap online also almost the same cost as the DIY shuffle, the shuffle is a little less but not by much. So if you like the shuffle but want it to be a full size pocket/folding knife than go with the Kershaw 1920 select fire
@timothyvolkers5343

I decided to check Amazon for prices. The DIY shuffle is about $28 and the select fire is about $10 more for a cost of $39.80. There's a different multi tool that appears to be the exact same as the select fire made/sold by a company called OEMtools that costs$20 or $19.98 to be exact. Everything appears to be the exact same from the Kershaw select fire to the OEMtools version except that the OEM model is a bright HI VIS Neon/Zombie green. Since the Kershaw select fire is outsourced and made in China I bet that the OEMtools is the company that makes the Kershaw select fire and just changed the handle colors so they can sell it directly instead of going through Kershaw

I also have and love the Select Fire. The only complaint I've ever heard is that it's a little oversized, but I have large hands so it feels very comfortable to me.

As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. kzbin.infoUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

Nice selection of tools. I probably use the cheap, belkin credit card sized bit kit that I picked up in the impulse aisle at microcenter 20+ years ago the most out of any of my bit sets. It has 6 universal bits and an extender

It also helps content makers who don't post on a "Every Tuesday at 11am". Setting up a premier helps them generate a buzz before the video hits. Channels like Project Farm that drop every Sunday gets that built in "anticipation" on Saturday, but this channel doesn't adhere to a scheduled release.

I like my picquic teeny turner. I bought it off the counter at a local ace for $6-8 several years back, thinking it had a handy assortment of bits and I still use it all the time! Bits have all held up very well, including the t6 and are actually if surprisingly good quality. Just a fairly standard little stubby driver with 6 bits stored in the handle plus one in the driver. Would definitely recommend! They seem to offer them with a variety of different bit configurations.

For me, that Milwaukee Fastback….I work in a blown film factory and we use box cutters constantly and the combination of back up box cutter and screwdriver to change the blades on a standard box cutter is incredibly handy. Also I carry a pocket kit with a dedicated pair of folding Munkees scissors… so I would love to see a video on what you like for edc scissors.

So thankful you have all these to discuss. I feel like multitool screwdrivers are the most challenging to discover and to pick among everything. @@maxlvledc sure did and it was another good one. The cobra pliers are on the short list of my next purchase and I have a Boker tech tool city 5. I was thinking more like multi tool wrenches similar to the piranha 2, tpt slide, and the wrench/pry bar I’ve seen you post in the past. Something thin/flat with a step down system that could maybe fit in a sheath behind a multitool.

I've simply decided to take a Sealey brand 1/4" micro ratchet and Bahco T-handle bit driver with a Dewalt 32 piece bit set. Covers all my bases alongside a decent multi tool and doesn't take up much space at all regardless of my needs - either torque or precision.

Great video, the precision drivers and utility knife in this video are what I didn't know I needed. So far the EDC tool that I've used the most is my Gerber dime. I've been laugh at by having it, but of all the tools I have, is the one that I've used the most and has helped me in dire situations as well.
@Dracomies
@Dracomies 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly if they made a Gerber Dime with Big Idea Design quality - but basically had the same size and parts - but better versions I'd totally buy it. The Gerber Dime is so portable in its size and in theory had the most useful tools (not in its actual usecase but the actual tools they were trying to provide). I just found that the parts were so hard to come out and didn't work as well. If it was like Victorinox quality but that size and look it'd be perfect. In many ways it's like the perfect size, the most useful tools (in theory) but just not executed correctly. TLDR if it actually had good tweezers (and weren't useless), if the scissors (were Victorionox quality), the bottle opener (is good), if the knife (came out easier and was more sleek), if the screw drivers were more better designed, if the pliers were like Knipex Cobra XS, etc. One can only dream. I'd have bought it and would pay a premium for them.
