My video about leaving Wheeler Dealers has generated a huge response, so thank you for that, but there are now a lot of questions to answer; the first is about Mike (transcript below):-
It seems we need to talk about Mike.
A lot of you have been asking if I'm still talking to Mike, whether I'm upset with him, and whether we'll continue to be friends in the future.
…And the answer is… of course! Is he my favourite person at right now? Probably not. And I know for sure I am not his, but that's ok.
We're both adults; we'll get over ourselves, we'll get past it and we'll be fine.
Now, Mike called me at the weekend and told me that over the past few days; not only he, but also his wife and daughter had been receiving a lot of abuse and even death threats, because of my leaving the show, and that's really NOT cool.
We've just had a slight disagreement on how the show should be made - nobody needs to die!
We were brought together 14 years ago specifically to make Wheeler Dealers, and our instant on screen chemistry was what made Dan Allum and Michael Wood cast us together for their show.
Part of the success of our relationship is the fact that we have very different backgrounds and very different ways of doing things.
In fact, our different approach to a common interest is one of the many winning ingredients of the show. Creative tension, if managed properly, always makes for a better result.
Let's look at the positives here, I am now free to pursue new ventures and with any luck I will be able to make some kind of new show that will include all of my usual detailed jobs and Top Tips.
Mike will make new episodes of Wheeler Dealers, and to those; Ant will bring a new chemistry with Mike and his own approach to the classics going through the workshop. It will be really interesting to see what these changes will bring.
So, with any luck, you might end up with two new shows where there was only one.
That's got to be a cracking deal!

Ed was just a co presenter of WD and he did quit because the producers wanted to cut more scenes because it takes too much time and a crew is expensive, so Ed made a stuppid mistake to demand things, because he got payed very well for each episode, so he should kept his job because there's not a single other job that pay's that much and it's just easy money. Now he has to make video's on yourtube and that's the only money he makes atm, because not a singel tv station or producer want's to give him his own show, so he ruined his own carreer. Now i did read that hs net worth is about 3 million, so in fact he doesn't have to work ever again when he's not going the live the life of the rich and famous, but he could have had 6 million by now, so he sure made a bad decission imo.

Sad that he's left as he was the main reason I watched it - his garage parts with tips etc were what I liked most about the show. My husband liked seeing the cars they chose and how they ended up, but Edd was the main reason for watching it. For me seeing how the mechanics of restoring a car worked is so much more interesting than all the 'padding' with Mike Brewer. Having seen Ant working in the C4 series with Philip Glenister I can't say I was impressed - he's capable enough (though a bit of a bodge artist), but he's no Edd China; he certainly has a....ahem.....'attitude' I can't see Mike Brewer coping with long term. Mind you, Glenister will never win prizes as Mr Congeniality either (I think he believes he IS Gene Hunt these days), so perhaps that was why Ant was so abrupt (at best; rude at worst). However, that said, I do think the bean counting and penny pinching the makers of Wheeler Dealers have done by cutting back on Edd's garage time, to the point he's left, will come back to the bite them. Still, Mike is Mike and will continue being the 'cockney wide boy' he's honed for the show, which many people love (me, not so much - I like Brewer, just not when he's 'in character'). I think death threats and abuse are ridiculous, especially to Brewer's family - I mean it's just a tv show; hardly enough to start WW3 over, is it? Some people really need to get a life and, as my daughter (19) would say "build a bridge and get over it already". I do genuinely hope Edd gets his own show with LOTS of garage time - now THAT would be a show I'd watch until the cows come home. Just call me a female petrolhead!! XD

Nailed it especially with Mike. Over the decades of selling cars he's honed that /persona/ his way, and for him it works. Just because that's his /work/ persona doesn't mean he is that way any other time, anymore than David Tennant, who as Doctor Who had an English accent, is remotely English using his /real/ Scottish accent when being himself. I've seen all three mechanics, Edd, Ant, and Elvis and I like them all. No offence to Edd at all, but I don't only watch episodes with him in, and from what he said in this video, I don't think he'd want that. BTW I've seen Ant in his Master Mechanic series, and Celebrity Joyride, I think he did fine in those. My opinion anyway :)

@@julianmhall - I didn't bother with it, but my husband did and said Ant was okay. He didn't feel that Ant and Brewer jelled at all, but overall the show worked okay. But Brewer started to grate so I jogged on to other things - namely Vice Grip Garage, Sleeperdude and Junkyard Digs/Mook here on KZbin. I think what did it for me with Brewer was him on Car Throttle with that Alex bloke and his 'old out yer aaaannnnd' skit. Drove.Me.Nuts. I could never watch Brewer after that without war flashbacks of that manchild. I've gone back to Car Throttle now Alex has gone tho! LOL!
@julianmhall
@julianmhall Жыл бұрын
@@troublemcallister730 I've never heard of Car Throttle, although I have seen some Wheeler Dealer spinoffs like Dream Car. Car shows I watch these days are a mix of US and UK like Kindig Customs, Fantom Works, Vintage Voltage, (based in mid Wales), Bangers and Cash, Car SOS (although Tim's on screen persona annoys me), Goblin Works etc.
@troublemcallister730
@troublemcallister730 Жыл бұрын
@@julianmhall - Oh I love Car SOS. But I agree about Tim. I prefer it when he's telling us about the history of the model/make of car or the manufacturing/restoration of what he's out getting rather than all that odious fake 'blagging'. I think my husband likes Vintage Voltage and Kingdig. We also watch Bangers & Cash. Husband knows someone who went up to Thornton Le Dale just for one of the auctions and he said it were mental up there, so many people and it's only a tiny village, so it's basically overrun with tourists for Bangers and Cash every auction . LOL! Husband's mate said it's amazing but most people can't even get inside the building (mind, this was just after the first season, I dread to think how busy it'd be now). I used to visit TlD when I was in my teens/early 20s as my parents LOVED Yorkshire and we had an old caravan and were always going up to Yorkshire every chance we had; Thornton le Dale and York were places my late mum loved. Of course never knew how famous the place would become, but I remember Mathewsons. My favourite youtuber is Sleeperdude. But there's so many others who're really good. I like old cars; customs, 'will they starts' and, my favourite vehicles in the world....pick ups (older the better, though I do love the ones with back seats and bench seats). LOATHE supercars and sports cars....LOATHE them.

This is proof there are millions of "sick whackos" in this sick world we live in. We live in a world of "very mentally sick people." This is "only a TV show"...nothing more and nothing less. George Harrison wrote a tune..."All Things Must Pass"...this is life...people move on...people pass on...worry about your own life and your own mortality. "This is life...you whackos"...get over it! Wheeler Dealers is one of my favorite shows and I love MIke and Edd...they have the right to make changes in their life...like we all do!

Roughly 14 years ago if not a little more, I would record some episodes on old VHS tapes to follow Ed’s instruction. No one around me was car savvy nor were there any people in my life who would take me on, and show me around simple car maintenance; let alone the complexities of car repair. To make long stories shorter as a kid I would watch Ed China and try my hardest to learn what I could from him. I hope he has found great success and I am eager to watch any new show casting Ed as our leading man. I will continue to watch as I did then and learn everything I can.

Always did have. If I could have had episodes of WD on TV with Mike edited out, just showing Edd's workshop lessons, that's what I would have opted for. @@viennapalace Not sure what Mike Brewer could do to get me to subscribe to anything he was doing, but an apology to Edd for all the bad press would be a start. Edd had integrity and Mike went for the money. Maybe having seen how Top Gear shook out, Mike should have backed Edd. The way that RH and JM backed Clarkson, for all his faults. That's friendship, and that United front let them survive to better times together. Mike is my definition of fair weather friend, but then whoever met a used car dealer with a soul, or any pride?

To be fair to both Edd and Mike, they've both in the past contributed to the show equally and I enjoy both parts of the show. Mikes bit is entertaining and is interesting although I always think it's a bit false when they have a deal at the end of the show. Edd though is a big reason why most people watch wheeler dealers and as other people have said on here he is very informative and a lot of people tackle jobs on their own cars because they've seen him do it. I'd be surprised if the show goes on for more than a couple of series. Just want to say, thanks Edd for showing us all the work you've done in the last 13 seasons. Look forward to seeing you in your own show.

Mike's alright, he is entertaining, he did his part and was pretty good at it but the numbers have always been skewed on the show. All those cost analysis never took the hours/cost of labour into account, which I have a sneaky suspicion that Edd took the brunt of in the majority of cases. Mike might have sold the show, but Edd was the meat an potatoes of it and in the end, I agree, as probably the majority of us would , we wanted to see how Edd tackled the problems, showed us the tools and methods of how to get the project ahead and, as you've mentioned, gave us all the confidence to do it ourselves.👍
@MarcusTDM
@MarcusTDM 7 жыл бұрын
BeaverBill to be fair about the costings, Mike has on numerous occasions explained why they don't take Ed's labour costs into account, it's because they are trying to show the profit that can be made if you do the work yourself.

Most of the show features Edd putting the cars back together again. And if it wasn't for him and the detail he goes into explaining what he's doing, then Wheeler Dealers, in my opinion, wouldn't be so popular. It's not just about transforming old cars into new ones, the show with Edd in it has substance.

I continue to watch Wheeler Dealers. Of course it's not the same anymore, but I think Mike and Ant did an amazing job as well. And I can't wait to see Marc Priestley F1 Elvis in action very soon. It's very sad that Mike reveived abusive messages (and even death threats) because you decide to leave the show. Even Ant, I think, received this kind of comments. I don't want to compare, judge on who's the best. I just think your all doing it well, on your own special way. People in social media these days... I would like say to them : "Keep calm! Our Edd is still there, more on the Web than on the TV. But he's doing what he like the way it ententend to be". As you said : "you might end up with two new shows where there was only one". And when Ant left the show in his turn, he said : "we're going to give more car shows, more car contain, more craziness, more engineering, more fixes". And there's actually more than 2 shows! Isn't it good? If you enjoy like me, stay tuned, if you don't like, skip. Wishes of happiness and success on you next projects to all of you guys.

Tim Halpin - have you been watching the Diesel brothers? I gave up on Roadkill for the very reasons you stated. Same with Gas Monkey when it became the 'Richard Rawlins Show' and another borefest. However, I do love Diesel Brothers; I love trucks more than any sports car ever made (I don't get the point of cars like the Diablo, NextEV, Bugatti Veyron and Gumpert Apollo Sport who are so low you'd never get them over a pebble, let alone one of our British speedbumps). Besides, even though I'm a woman, my favourite vehicle is the one I have now - a Toyota Hilux Surf (old girl now) which is battered and bloody, but unbowed (I live rurally with small lanes and insane locals who think they're at Le Man; but don't want to get their micro cars muddy, so drive up the MIDDLE of the road). That all said - I really would like to see Edd get his own show; at the end of the day, and this is just my opinion obviously, his parts were the only bits I took seriously about WD. Mike Brewer seems a nice enough bloke, but 'cockney wide boy' persona he has is annoying as hell. He is NOT 'Arthur Daly' from Minder.......and it was so clear, with the no productions company, that it was clearly scripted because, unlike George Cole, he can't act his way out of a piece of tissue.

I love wheeler dealer and have more or less watched it from the beginning with my now husband. I hope you can manage to move forward, it's a shame you'll no longer be working together, we wish you both well for the future xx

Seeing you and mike pick up those low cost classics gave the show a more relatable reach to younger audiences(rather than the bigger price range we see today). To find out that you would take such measures to keep the detail, tips and tricks we all love to hear brings joy to us all! Keep doing your thing and we hope to see you back in the garage soon.

What a class act. Full of integrity. You can tell he is someone who has a hard time being dishonest. Doesn't hold a grudge either, which is admirable. One of the few mechanics I'd want working on my car unsupervised. Can't wait for him to start putting out how own content. I'll be an avid viewer.

Gonna miss Edd on WD (he was my favorite of the two - No offense to Mike!), but people cross paths and come and go all the time in their careers, no need to make any drama about it. Best wishes to Edd on his future endeavors. If you make death threats over a television show cast change you need to rethink your priorities in life.

It seems that British shows that go through an "Americanization" do so at their own peril. I also follow Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares" and it went through a similar transition as Wheeler Dealers. The British version is to the point, quiet, and low-key (and entertaining). Then it comes to America and assumes the audience is stupid. It adds all sorts of gimmicks, crazy editing, and conflict to try to entertain the American with no attention span. I think it's a horrible mistake and the nail in the coffin for Wheeler Dealers. The latest seasons of Wheeler Dealers have included some stupid antics and contrived conflict that distract from what makes the show so great. I think it's such a shame that the China/Brewer pair is breaking up when things could've just continued as they were under the British model.

I agree with KAuto26. There was a tie when American media and entertainment used to be substantive, creative and entertaining. Most American production and media companies have their heads up their asses and are unwilling to do what it takes to either preserve something that is already good or to go in a new direction other that the status quo. The way wheeler dealer was originally done along with Top Gear and many other British productions was what attracted so many Americans in the first place. They were different, they did not rely on gimmicks, and loud cheesy music and retreading one theme after another. There was a time when the Discovery channel, History channel and so on used to be unique and substantive. Now everything is like a cookie cutter fast food chain, mostly crap. I'd much rather watch a BBC documentary or the only good American media outlet, PBS, any day than the run of the mill garbage these days.

Mr Ben so if what you're saying is true then Americans would like the new format. And if that is the case then the people sending the threats to Mike and his family must be BRITSH. My theory is a little different. I think it's more about corporate greed and it can happen to any show that becomes mainstream. It's just that they more often move from UK to the US when the bigger corps buy up IP. That might be because there is a larger population in the US so the TV networks have more money here by virtue of the fact there is more advertising revenue to me made from a larger audience - stupid or otherwise. Just a thought. Love you Brits.
