the whale had scars on it plus 4kids wouldn't have known that the whale was important because in the sub version of one piece was on the water 7 arc and in the manga it was on the enies lobby arc it's until thrill bark when a character who has a backstory with the whale shows up.

@@Kolbjornelenano The most common theories I've seen are 1. 4kids One piece does not like to mention death, and they find out all of the whale's pirate friends died 50 years ago. 2. Ever since then he's been bashing his head against the coast which so now his face is covered in scars, and 4kids probably didn't want to show a story that kinda portrays a whale performing self harm.

13:38 “The alternate to this is swearing in another language” that line reminds me that, when shooting Mork and Mindy, Robin Williams would often be speaking alien gibberish, or what the producers and crew assumed was alien gibberish, but he would often sneak in swear words from other languages he had some grasp of, including Russian, Spanish and Yiddish. Eventually the network picked up on this and they had to bring in foreign language censors to make sure he wasn’t sneaking in anything, and then - of course, because it’s robin - he would switch to a different language once they brought in someone to censor him in one given language

One of my favorite censorship tactics I heard about, to get around censorship, was the act of adding even worse jokes that would cause the censors to not notice the original joke. Well, apparently, once on M*A*S*H, they had put one of these fake jokes in near a real joke they thought would make the censors angry. The censors skipped over both and demanded they removed the phrase "Your V.I.P.-ness" because they thought they were trying to sneak in the word penis. The writer's never even thought of that and got the notes back utterly confused.

There was also a running joke in some old movies of an actor staring dead at the camera and saying "Fuck." to the audience just before the movie actually starts. From gay people being characterized as having a disorder to having "fucks", a word which has lost a lot of meaning, being mistaken for a another word which has gained a lot of notoriety since it's original inception. Honestly, the Shadowrealm censorship is so much more interesting than normal death or hell in the original It feels more like some sort of mystical evil force, where the vagueness of what it is, makes it so much more scary and intimidating than just saying someone dies or is sent to hell. Like, I have a good idea of what death or hell is, but a purple otherworldly liquid that is going to swallow my body and soul? That sounds straight out of a Lovecraft story. I don’t even know if the shadow realm is going to kill me, all I know is that I want to be as far away from it as possible.

@@IncubiAkster the difference is in the fact that the shadow realm is an unknown concept. If a villain opened up a portal and said “good luck escaping _hell_” i have no clue what hell is actually like, but I’d be able to take a few good guesses at it. But if someone were to say “off to the shadow realm” well, whats a shadow realm? whats inside a shadow realm? how long does it last? Can i escape a shadow realm? Etc. The fact that they created their own evil afterlife makes it more intimidating than if they kept as just the underworld because we as the audience don’t know what its like until the characters explain/experience it

@@IncubiAkster yeah but you see, the difference is that hell has been depicted many, many, MANY times. It's either a cave filled with lava and fire and torture, a frozen lake, a place with a swirly vortex of whatever you wanna interpret souls as, a dark poisonous swamp, or a harem of sin full of hot demon girls, etc. So the "fear of the unknown" is gone there when there's so much fiction giving their take on the place. Granted, the shadow realm is literally "hell but with other name", but you have no idea then how a little rebranding can be so powerful. Just look at Super Smash Bros, everyone complaining that clones were stealing roster spots, but now that they're Echo fighters, people are literally asking for DLC echo fighters.

I love creative workarounds for censorship in media. There was one shot in a recent MPAA PG-13 movie that it took me a couple watches to figure out how it got past censors. The said shot is a closeup of someone’s brains getting blown out, but due to their headwear stretching to contain the matter, the brains are never actually visible in the shot. While most kids cartoons don’t have as much brutality with the violence, with it reduced to a minimum, The Clone Wars 2008 series is a show that got away with showing a lot of the depravity had in a war and a lot of character deaths on-screen instead of off. I'm not talking like "Oh, basically turn it into a pre-school channel" (which they technically did considering CN Too took the place of Toonami, whereas Cartoonito became it's own channel on Toonami's previous space) but I'm meaning like when they used to have CNX, a channel which was made for grown-ups.

One of my favorite shows as a kid was Samurai Jack, and I especially loved how they were able to really get away with imagery so creatively. The original airing of the series for the first four seasons was TV-Y7 FV (suitable for ages 7 and above for Fantasy Violence), but has since been bumped up to TV-PG, I believe, with season five definitely being more mature and taking advantage of the lesser restrictions to various levels of success, while still keeping true to original spirit. My favorite episode had to have been the "Jack is Naked" episode where his clothes get stolen and he spends like half the episode trying to either get his clothes back, get new clothes (and being mistaken for people like a burglar), or just avoiding being seen while nude. That’s… not… funny…” However, due to a shooting that occurred at the time, they had to censor it for a time. How did they do it? Well… they made the Joker’s death MORE HORRIFYING. I’m not kidding! In the censored version, Robin throws the gun aside, then throws the Joker into a large container that contained liquid, causing the clown to get soaked, while a puddle forms below him. Then, as he tries to get up, he slips, and accidentally flips a lever, causing some broken wires to spark, electrocuting him to death offscreen, while Batgirl, and by extension, the audience, get to hear his screams of PURE AGONY!

My favorite censorship job ever is the censored version of Megadeth's cover of "These Boots", basically, the song writer, Lee Hazlewood, got so upset over Dave Mustaine changing the lyrics of the song that he threatened to take legal action if he didn't censor out the lewd/edgy stuff. So naturally, Dave censored everything he could, making the song sound even more rude than the original, and being just overall hysterical to listen to. Mustaine also grilled Hazlewood after the fact as well. “Lee Hazlewood says my cover is a vile, vulgar, offensive cover. What I find vile and vulgar is that they were happy to collect a royalty check for years before complaining about it.”

(14:40) I dislike pre-censored content so much, since swearing is allowed on Swedish TV as far as I can tell. So post-censored content in USA is not censored here, but pre-censored content is, and it's very jarring first watching one dropping f-bombs just fine, then right after having one censored. - Please have an uncensored version for audiences who don't watch it censored.

I'm american, and I can not understand how someone can be shown graphically having their head bashed in with a barbed wire wrapped baseball bat is ok but a lady nipple is the end of the world. Anything involving creating life is bad but something about taking a life against their will is ok?

As a non-American person who grew up religious, I can tell you that the first time I ever conciously heard of a connection of swear words or nudity with religion was when I was in my late teens and on the english speaking part of the internet. And I didn't get how those were supposed to be related. I guess I could understand christians being against "using the lords name in vain", so not wanting "god" or "Jesus" to be used as swear words, but I would have never connected words like "fuck" or "shit" with religion. I mean, they don't have anything to do with each other. And nudity by itself doesn't need to be sexual and again, doesn't really have anything to do with religion. Mentioning that a married couple has sex is also not something where I could see why that would be bad. But especially the connection between swearing and religion is something that has confused me since I first heard about it. I still don't get it. My parents are very religious and I know a lot of other very religious people, but none of them have ever said or implied that swearing is bad for religious reasons. I just don't get that.

Same shit as GTA allowing decapitations but sex being the ultimate sin I guess they couldn't promote wars and lethal injections as something good otherwise

The biblical concept of Hell predated the shadow realm by (I think) thousands of years. But the actual concept of an underworld not named Hell is even older than Satan’s Place itself, going way back into the prehistoric times.

My favorite instance of playing with censorship was an episode of Game Grumps where they play Katamari and Dan is explaining to Arin what "felching" is, where Barry threw in the bleeps at appropriate and inappropriate points, sprinkling them in almost randomly.

My favorite replacement swears are on Farscape and Adam Ruins Everything. On Farscape, the main characters are far from Earth so they use alien words (which conveniently don't get translated by the translator microbes which handle everything else just fine). So they'll say Frellin' Hazmama instead of actually swearing. On Adam Ruins Everything, they'll replace key words in swear words with the names of birds. For example, Mother Falcon.

1:43 actually the reason rice balls were censored is that it was only broadcasted in America and some kids and parents would be confused to hear riceball. edit: and also after parents got mad over brock for eating too much junk food 4kids changed it to popcorn balls and onions. THAT'S EVEN WORSE!!!!!!!!

I think a very valid point about the Lower Decks bleep misunderstanding is that the viewers are tuned into the show's comedic narrative of watching impure/horrible people (like Archer), so they automatically assume the worst coming out from said characters.
