Eventually the network picked up on this and they had to bring in foreign language censors to make sure he wasn’t sneaking in anything, and then - of course, because it’s robin - he would switch to a different language once they brought in someone to censor him in one given language

One of my favorite censorship tactics I heard about, to get around censorship, was the act of adding even worse jokes that would cause the censors to not notice the original joke. Well, apparently, once on M*A*S*H, they had put one of these fake jokes in near a real joke they thought would make the censors angry. The censors skipped over both and demanded they removed the phrase "Your V.I.P.-ness" because they thought they were trying to sneak in the word penis. The writer's never even thought of that and got the notes back utterly confused.

Honestly, the Shadowrealm censorship is so much more interesting than normal death or hell in the original It feels more like some sort of mystical evil force, where the vagueness of what it is, makes it so much more scary and intimidating than just saying someone dies or is sent to hell. Like, I have a good idea of what death or hell is, but a purple otherworldly liquid that is going to swallow my body and soul? That sounds straight out of a Lovecraft story. I don’t even know if the shadow realm is going to kill me, all I know is that I want to be as far away from it as possible.

@@IncubiAkster the difference is in the fact that the shadow realm is an unknown concept. If a villain opened up a portal and said “good luck escaping _hell_” i have no clue what hell is actually like, but I’d be able to take a few good guesses at it. But if someone were to say “off to the shadow realm” well, whats a shadow realm? whats inside a shadow realm? how long does it last? Can i escape a shadow realm? Etc. The fact that they created their own evil afterlife makes it more intimidating than if they kept as just the underworld because we as the audience don’t know what its like until the characters explain/experience it

Granted, the shadow realm is literally "hell but with other name", but you have no idea then how a little rebranding can be so powerful. Just look at Super Smash Bros, everyone complaining that clones were stealing roster spots, but now that they're Echo fighters, people are literally asking for DLC echo fighters.

While most kids cartoons don’t have as much brutality with the violence, with it reduced to a minimum, The Clone Wars 2008 series is a show that got away with showing a lot of the depravity had in a war and a lot of character deaths on-screen instead of off. It is a regular occurrence in that show to see characters be sliced through with a lightsaber but since there is no blood, it’s fine.

Now, on the topic of censorship, remember when Turner tried to kid-ify Toonami back in the UK? I'm not talking like "Oh, basically turn it into a pre-school channel" (which they technically did considering CN Too took the place of Toonami, whereas Cartoonito became it's own channel on Toonami's previous space) but I'm meaning like when they used to have CNX, a channel which was made for grown-ups.
@Zephyr6163 жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember CNX, *BUT* our Toonami aired Outlaw Star uncensored, in the US they censored the f out of it even though it aired on adult swim there, while it had a 10pm and 4am timeslot on our Toonami. Stuff like Sonic X, Shaman King, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Card Captors, Yu-Gi-Oh,,etc were already airing on Fox Kids. Jetix brought stuff like Hyper monkey Super robot team and stuff like that, before eventually turning into Disney XD. The original airing of the series for the first four seasons was TV-Y7 FV (suitable for ages 7 and above for Fantasy Violence), but has since been bumped up to TV-PG, I believe, with season five definitely being more mature and taking advantage of the lesser restrictions to various levels of success, while still keeping true to original spirit. My favorite episode had to have been the "Jack is Naked" episode where his clothes get stolen and he spends like half the episode trying to either get his clothes back, get new clothes (and being mistaken for people like a burglar), or just avoiding being seen while nude. That’s… not… funny…” However, due to a shooting that occurred at the time, they had to censor it for a time. How did they do it? Well… they made the Joker’s death MORE HORRIFYING. I’m not kidding! In the censored version, Robin throws the gun aside, then throws the Joker into a large container that contained liquid, causing the clown to get soaked, while a puddle forms below him. Then, as he tries to get up, he slips, and accidentally flips a lever, causing some broken wires to spark, electrocuting him to death offscreen, while Batgirl, and by extension, the audience, get to hear his screams of PURE AGONY!

My favorite censorship job ever is the censored version of Megadeth's cover of "These Boots", basically, the song writer, Lee Hazlewood, got so upset over Dave Mustaine changing the lyrics of the song that he threatened to take legal action if he didn't censor out the lewd/edgy stuff. So naturally, Dave censored everything he could, making the song sound even more rude than the original, and being just overall hysterical to listen to. Mustaine also grilled Hazlewood after the fact as well. “Lee Hazlewood says my cover is a vile, vulgar, offensive cover. What I find vile and vulgar is that they were happy to collect a royalty check for years before complaining about it.”

And I didn't get how those were supposed to be related. I guess I could understand christians being against "using the lords name in vain", so not wanting "god" or "Jesus" to be used as swear words, but I would have never connected words like "fuck" or "shit" with religion. I mean, they don't have anything to do with each other. And nudity by itself doesn't need to be sexual and again, doesn't really have anything to do with religion. Mentioning that a married couple has sex is also not something where I could see why that would be bad. But especially the connection between swearing and religion is something that has confused me since I first heard about it. I still don't get it. My parents are very religious and I know a lot of other very religious people, but none of them have ever said or implied that swearing is bad for religious reasons. I just don't get that.
