6:42 theres a very good detail in this movie that in the actual scene of Bob rejecting Buddy he's holding Bomb Voyage prone, dealing with the serious and dangerous situation currently on hand, but in Syndrome's flashback to the scene later in the movie Bomb Voyage isn't even there, Syndrome literally didn't notice or care about him. He made the entire thing out to be about himself.

Something that struck me: Mr. Incredible knows who Buddy is. He remembers him. Which tells me that he does/did know and love his fans. He probably did know a few by name and was friendly and nice to them. Buddy took advantage of that kindness and took it too far. I see a lot of actors like that who remember certain fans by name and I see how pushy fans can be the worst to them.

Something I realized is Buddy's interference is what caused the outlawing of supers across the board. If he didn't involved with bomb voyage then that incident with the train wouldn't have occurred. I love that scene near the end where Syndrome finally ‘reveals’ himself after saving some people from the omnidroid and instead of cheering him, the onlookers are just like “Who the fuck is he? Is that Fironic?” It visibly pisses of Syndrome that people aren’t behaving like he’s **expecting them to** he wants them to worship him as a hero but even at his ‘greatest moment’ he’s completely deluded.

If you pause the movie and read the text that appears on-screen through the Omnidroid's vision in the moment before the "blindside", you can see its train of thought: >Arm fell off. Why. >Arm was removed by signal. Locate signal. >Remote sent signal. Disable remote. It *learned* the remote was dangerous to it, and resolved to solve the problem.

Another great aspect of Syndrome's character is his relationship with Mirage. She is the vehicle he uses to convince Bob to come to the island which ultimately leads to his capture. Mirage however is shown not to be as ruthless, soon when she is visibly uncomfortable to play the plane's transmission knowing Bob's wife is the pilot, and is terrified when she hears his children's are also there. This transitions to Syndrome mocking Bob for being alone and Bob grabbing and threatening to kill Mirage in his grief. Bob is of course unable to due the torture of the device he is held in, but this sets up one of Syndrome's biggest flaws: people are disposable. Following this, Mirage blatantly tells him, "Next time you gamble, bet your own life." She then focuses her efforts on helping the heroes, helping Bob escape, telling him his family is alive, and giving them the password to launch the rocket. Because he viewed her as disposable, she helped speed up his undoing. Again, it shows even when he had an organization behind him, he saw them as nothing more than pieces in his master plan, and thus, he was always alone.

He was always morally upright and tried to do the right thing and, in that moment, in his eyes, it cost him his family and here was one of the people responsible. But the second he found out his family was still alive, all that rage left him. He had people worth fighting for. If it was only to save himself, he didn't care. But he immediately wanted to be back with his family. The man was a hero for as long as he was human. I love every bit of this movie. Hot damn.

This is a brilliant scene to tell you everything you need to know about Syndrome. One of my favourite details is how Syndrome seems to misremember the Bomb Voyage scene. In the original scene, Mr Incredible is clearly angry, as Buddy has crossed a line. The kid's interfering with a Super Villain fight, putting himself and others in danger. He says to fly home, and that he works alone, all while still dealing with Bomb Voyage and showing that Buddy is distracting him. When Syndrome remembers it, Mr Incredible is looming over him, casting judgement, and Bomb Voyage is nowhere to be seen. You'd think the bomb on his cape would be something Buddy remembers, that Mr Incredible saved him, but no. Buddy doesn't even recall the danger he was in that night, nor the trouble he caused. He only remembers his hero spurning him, and none of the consequences of his actions.

He's also sadistically playful and funny. He mocks mr incredible for having family when he " works alone " ( despite him having frozone with him as a sidekick ) and even says things like " YOU GOT BIZZAY ". You wouldn't see other good villains like thanos saying that. And Syndrome also probably does remember the bomb on his cape and what not, he just cuts it out to be in denial. His ego overshadows the good things that mr incredible does. The main reason they even saw each other and bomb voyage is because mr incredible wanted to save a suicide victim, probably thinking he was gonna regret the jump soon. Besides why does that guy care about it so much if he WANTED to die and the injuries got him closer?

Another important Syndrome moment was when he tried to goad Mr Incredible into killing Mirage when he was at his most desperate. Mr Incredible was unable to go through with it, and Syndrome dismisses him as weak. This is a woman with whom it is implied in Syndrome's conversation with her was in some sort of romantic relationship, and yet he treated her as a disposable object. He later tries to play off his indifference to her fate as him knowing Mr Incredible was bluffing, but Mirage was understandably upset, and later betrays him to help Mr Incredible and his family escape. Mirage understood that Mr Incredible's respect for life was not weakness, and Syndrome disregarding it was not strength. Bob had more compassion for his enemies than Syndrome ever did for those suposedly closest to him. Deliberately sending missiles to Elastigirl's jet even after finding out their children were aboard was a pretty evil action too.

And he's ruthlessly sadistic, like flowey from undertale or that dude from megamind that pissed when he saw fake metro man. In fact i think the latter is quite similar with red hair and what not. One more thing, the only thing close to the syndrome adult joke, is the " suger honey ice tea " from madagascar. Also syndrome's " i was gonna go with bs for baby sitter, but i couldn't. You understand why. " in the jack jack babysitting short. Which for some reason forgets that the baby sitting girl was struggling with syndrome as in he captured jack jack.

One thing I love about Syndrome’s flashback to Mr Incredible’s rejection is the inaccuracies present in the scene. In the original scene, Mr Incredible is more focused on Bomb Voyage, making sure he doesn’t escape and all that, whereas in Syndrome’s flashback Mr Incredible is totally focused on Buddy, making the rejection look so much more personal. Bomb Voyage isn’t even present in the flashback, Syndrome doesn’t even remember him.

You know... a lot of people really do say Syndrome is the best commentary on toxic fans. And I have to agree, I never noticed it when I was younger. All I saw was 'Oh, this guy is insane and wants to hurt people for his benefit' But now, I see it more as 'Oh, this guy was a fan of superheroes and is insane to the point of wanting to hurt people to become one and put people on the same level' Now, this isn't the same as being Batman, Batman had a good motive for being a Hero. To stop people from getting hurt the same way he did (Even if it is... a bit loose in how he does it). But Syndrome, he's wanting to be a Hero because it's 'fun' and 'full of fame and glory'. Unfortunately, Heroism is not like that. If it was all fun and games, nearly every hero fanboy would be dressed as Superman or Spiderman and going out to save the city. Heroism, in my opinion, is more or less the act of willing to give life and limb to protect those who deserve protection. No matter what. Not everybody *can* be a Hero, they have to be dedicated to the cause of helping people and realize that what they are doing could kill them. Even if they're Superman, they can't always rely on their powers to well... strength. Especially if it has a weakness. Regardless, Syndrome is well written and I like this movie now more then ever. And I'm not even that big a superhero fan.

You know who else had great intelligence, was capable of creating amazing inventions and had the respect of many superheroes without having powers: Edna Mode. It's quite interesting to contrast the two characters in terms of their outlooks: Edna doesn't need the approval of superheroes; Mr Incredible complements her on her amazing design skills and she dismisses it with an offhand remark. Syndrome would have literally killed for that sort of attention. Edna invents for the pure love of it, and to help her friends when they need her. Syndrome invents to amass power and to further his twisted revenge plot. Crucially, Edna never looks back, she learns from the past and moves on with the next big idea (NO CAPES!). Syndrome focused so much on the perceived wrongs done to him by Mr Incredible that it consumed him.

This was captured in Syndrome's "fight" with the Omnidroid: 1) He pulls a classic heroic entrance of appearing out of the blue to save a mother and child at the last second, even after a lot of destruction and likely death. Compare that to the real heroes who are far more pragmatic - Mr Incredible chooses the best point to get ahead of a car chase and doesn't care if he's not visible to the public when stopping criminals. 2) He tosses the fuel truck aside and lets it explode, which is like how superheroes have a bad habit of causing heavy destruction and inadvertently endangering lives. Mr Incredible put the tree back and tried to minimise property damage, but the one time that he lost control of the situation and wrecked a train, it netted him serious trouble. 3) He engages in a horribly choreographed fight and made sure to showboat, whilst the robot he designed to adapt to and overcome superheroes doesn't act like a cardboard prop and turns on him. Mr I, Elastigirl, Thunderhead and many others have quickly incapacitated their foes and kept control of the situation and it was disastrous for them when they slipped up. The second the Omnidroid turned on him, Syndrome found himself realising that superheroics is far more work and danger than he could ever comprehend or handle.

I agree, they were trying to have Evelyn serve as a person to argue against heroes with the death of her father but she is right that he was stupid as he tried to call for heroes when the break in took place after heroes were banned, which is more of her father being dumb than the fault of heroes. Nando v Movies fixed the motivation by having it be that the father tried to fight the robbers himself and was killed doing so, plus working in her whole Screenslaver persona by arguing that fiction can make people act out to try and be a hero but he also includes a counter arguement to her's through Winston. I reccomend checking out he full video if you haven't already.

If the villain, be it a hero who has had enough or a bruised ego or someone leading the hate on the heroes, has a strong arguement then it would make an interesting conflict on why heroes save the day, even if it is a thankless job (similar to Spiderman depending on the writer/media).

While I agree the sequel wasn't as good as the first, it's not nearly as big a downfall as most followups tend to be. I appreciate it for it's change in perspective, instead of it exclusively focusing on someone's personal vendetta, it's showing how a variety of social relations & reactions shift because of public opinion being highlighted by the most recent event be it hopeful or harmful. Picking up right after the original the populous is grateful and excited to have superheros back again, but as the villain continues to exploit media to nag doubts about autonomy and different framing (besides the obvious control issue), the supers quickly get called into question just like before. Showing people are as fickle as they are stubborn, regardless if they're powerful whether it be magic or money, yet modern life is self cyclical though spiraling apart; the powerful people control the lives of everyone below them even if they don't intend to, and likewise common folk are taught to rely on those above their station despite potentially having the ability to decide their own fate, case in point the class wage gap and lobbyists. I too still hope for a third movie, though I'd only be speculating what themes it'd cover I'd bet it'd be another change to some other important realization about society.

I love how even Bob's desire to help, the thing that actually makes him a hero, is still shut down by his boss time and again. Does he not realize hero work is the capability and drive to help people (which he still has as Bob Parr, insurance worker)? Or is it that he believes superhero work is the only way he CAN have the capability to help people (thanks to his other efforts being shut down)? He's adopted the attitude that Buddy thought he had all along, 'supers need to use powers to be heroes', possibly due to the ban, and it only led him into trouble. You can hear the radio briefly say "You're sure you want to switch targets?" which Mirage responds yes. This likely means that Mirage was choosing to capture Mr Incredible over Frozone. Probably didn't even realise that Mr Incredible was even in the area until that night. Afterall, if Mirage was tracking Mr Incredible much more before that night, then the location of Elastigirl would also be known (as well as the 3 new supers)

Syndrome reminds me of The Reverse Flash, a guy who idolised and wanted to be like his favourite superhero The Flash to the point he started dressing like him, had reconstructive surgery to look like him and committed crimes just to solve them like his hero. He stopped doing this after the Flash (who accidentally went to the future) put him jail. But like Syndrome being told off by Mr. Incredible he ignored it the first and wanted to be Flash's sidekick. He hurt himself just to get powers go back in time and meet him. When he gets there he learns he was the Flash's archnemisis. Thawn had devoted years of his life to the Flash, to the point he practically lived in the Flash museum after his parents died. He wanted everything the Flash had, the respect, the fame, everything. But when he learnt he was nothing but a foot note he snapped. His obsession ruined him

Can we point out that Syndrome wasn't powerless, his power is Super Intelligence. It's pretty obvious. You don't just make supertech without a power. Less Super Intelligence so much as Super-Tinkering / Supertechnician, the Thinker or Inventer power more specific to the inspired creation of technology that shouldn't exist, with the power either somehow telling you the right bits and bobs to twist and turn to produce supernatural effects similar to an arcane formula in 3D, or the super power brute force MAKES the invention work.

Characters with the Super-intellegence Power are also more likely to be narcissistic and alone. Unless they have gadgets or other powers, they are considered the "power-up" character, which isn't as glorious. Spider-man's Tinkerer (comic) is an example of such a person. A villain, yes. But while Spider-man's villains are usually geniuses in their own right, when they get beat down too many times, they go to The Tinkerer for a full-on Upgrade. Syndrome COULD'VE been like that. Or Tony Stark, who is also a Super-intellegence Powered person. His affinity for technology and machines is natural. Before his accident, he would've sold the Suit for money. But that bomb did more than make him a large electro magnet. It revealed his problem: he was hurting people, and was blinded to it. But both of these characters have something in common: they were narcissistic loners, trying to block out the world. One was famous. One wanted fame. And one was content, living in shadow.

You can also argue that in a world where some people can stretch their bodies in to any imaginable shape and others can fly and shoot beams of energy out of their very flesh, that being a bit cleverer than average isn't a super power. So Batman, Ironman and Syndrome can all get together and cry about how nobody understands how hard it is to be a superhero without any powers. Spiderman, who has all the powers of a spider is also an inventor. He invents the web shooters (for some reason) and later designs hi tech materials for his spider suit. Since spiders are universally not good at science, we can assume that the ability to invent things is a skill acquired by Peter Parker rather than a mutant ability from the soider bite. For Syndrome's speech about making everyone "super" (so that no one is!) to make sense, its clear that he understands super powers to be abilities that are unobtainable to normal people, even through luck of the draw. It seems Mr. Incredible was simply born with super strength, probably most heroes in this movie are just naturally occuring. If his strength was a result of extensive training, its unlikely that he would ever be able to life train carriages over his head. There is no strict definition for what Super powers are, or aren't. What counts as Super in the Incredibles might be different to the Marvel Universe, DC's universe, or any given writers interprations. Syndrome/Buddy has a quite specific thing in mind though, he means naturally acquired superhuman abilities. Super intelligence could be a Super power in his world, but only if the person is so smart that a normal or average person could never get to that level through practice and study. If Supers are just highly skilled people, none of his monolouge on the subject would make sense. Nobody would need weapons to become more powerful if they could simply train to become their best selves. Supers are a class above even the highest level athletes so the same should be true of inteligence.

Alrighty, I just stumbled upon this "One Villainous Scene" series, and I love it. Hearing people talk about some of my favorite scenes from some of my favorite movies is awesome. The Incredibles has and always will be one of my favorite movies, and hearing someone talk about one of the most well-written scenes in the movie (which is surprising, seeing as the entire movie is super well-written), but the way your essay is structured and comes across is just awesome. I think the reason why Syndrome idolized Mr. Incredible so much is because he never had a father in his life, so he gravitated to Bob as some sort of father figure. So, when Bob rejected him twice, it hurt all the more to him. He was also most likely ignored as a child, and yearned for the fame and glory that a superhero life could bring him, so he could finally feel noticed and respected. Syndrome looked at superheroes like they were celebrities, while ignoring that what makes a true hero isn't having awesome powers or stopping villains, but helping people and inspiring them to do and be better, simply because it's the right thing to do.

When I saw the incredibles in cinemas, I was so surprised by how much depth there was. I was only a kid, but I wasn’t expecting to actually feel much watching it. I was at a concert with a significant other for a band I’d never heard of, but they seemed pretty cool, I got a poster signed by all of them. Can’t remember the band name or where the poster is, don’t think I even still have it, not a big deal. When those guys came out, I was walking casually towards the meet up spot and DEAR GOD. The barricade caved in a frightening amount when the girls spotted the band. It was genuinely terrifying. And the screaming. I feel bad for those guys. This made me wounder if a character from the sequal is meant to be a representation of positive fandom. (spoilers for the second movie) Winston Endevour, like Buddy, is a fan of Supers, but where Buddy fixates on Mr Incredible, Winston is a fan of Supers in general, being polite, respectful but enthusiastic in there pressence. He wants to make them legal again, but doing this puts himself, his sister and his company in danger, as his plan is violating the law, taking a big personal risk in this endevour (No pun intended). He also recongnizes that the main problem along the way is the preception that most people have of supers (they are too destructive and have a high risk of causing collateral damage), and understands that that view needs to be changed first before they really bring about the big change. He has a nostalgic, positive perspective on Heros, and generally belives that the world would be a better place with them. And at the end of the movie when Evelyn tries to flee and drag him along, he returns to the ship to help save the mindcontrolled heroes and ambassadors. Winston is thus a representative of the positive side of fandom. He genuinely loves his interest and wants to share it with others. Despite his loving and nostalgic view on supers, he recognizes a genuine flaw with their approach, and his low key criticism is to correct that flaw. And at the end, when he saves the people who are mind controlled, he dosn't run to join up with his heroes, but helps where he actually can, letting the professionals do their job undisturbed. showing that he takes inspiration from the Supers, but sticks to what is reasonable.

This is so true for KZbinrs because people watch the videos and assume they’d be friends with this person in real life based on how they speak and act on camera, unaware of how many awkward takes it took the creator to nail down the most satisfactory way to get their point across, down to enunciation and facial movement. They will most likely not act just like the way you see them in their videos if you meet them. You have a positive reaction to their public persona and a positive experience with their content. And that’s fine. We are allowed to like things and be fans of the people that make the things. Leave it at that.

One more minor thing they do to help "Buddy?" sink in- the rocket boots. We saw Syndrome using them already- when he entered the scene- but directly after the "My name is not BUDDY!" line, he uses them again to jump off the Omnidroid and onto the ground. Just to remind you that despite the new toys, it's the same head.

I also like to point out; being special and wanting to be special are two different things. With Syndrome, he puts on special equipment and a hero facade as a means appearing more than he actually is. Meanwhile, Mr. Incredible is natural talented with his powers and is a great guy in general. Mr. Incredible will always be the better man than Syndrome and the fight with the second big robot only solidify this point.
