Today another video in the VS THE REST series, a new type of comparison, one running shoe in an out and out battle against many others!
A super shoe showdown today between the PUMA DEVIATE NITRO ELITE and the PUMA FAST-R NITRO ELITE. Quite the shoes, striking designs and some low weights.
What have you made of the PUMA DEVIATE NITRO ELITE and FAST-R NITRO ELITE so far? Do you notice an improvement with the wider surface area in the midsole of the FAST-R? How do these shape up against the other supershoes? I really enjoyed making the thumbnail today.

Puma does small changes to the models after original release. For example, Deviate Nitro 1 had a lot of complaints for Achilles rubbing and blisters to some people. They actually added more padding right behind the Achilles in later productions of the same model where it was missing in the original production. It is a sign of a company sensitive to customer feedback.

Deviate Elite is a great shoe for Half marathon and shorter racing or long training runs. At the marathon distance, (3:30 to 4hr range) it just lacks a bit of cushioning, so I know I would be suffering from 30km and on, as compared to the AlphaFly. Great comparison video!

I ran the Chicago Marathon last week in the Fast-R and the Baystate Marathon (in Massachusetts) today in the Deviate Elite. I think the Deviate Elite is the overall better shoe for distance running, and that's probably why we see a lot of the Puma athletes sticking with it rather than switching to the Fast-R. For me, the upper on the Fast-R is too restrictive and caused some significant pain in Chicago. There was no way I could have sized up. The Deviate Elite upper is, by comparison, wider and more voluminous, and the simple design and comparable weight mean that there's no real reason for me to switch to the Fast-R. The Deviate Elite is also cheaper of course, so that makes the decision even easier.

Ahhh yes a much needed comparison here, thanks Edd!! No, chips are definitely not cheap any more... I remember as a little kid after school sometimes we would stop and get 10cents worth of chips (the minimum) between 2 of us we'd be full after!!! Or maybe the cafe owner was just generous to kids!! Hi Edd, thanks for another Fast-r review! I felt guilty choosing it over the TS8 this morning as they have looked after me so well over the last year. However I got a new pb of 19.14 at parkrun (which I didn't think I'd see at 54 y/o). I don't have the other Puma shoe but love the Fast-R. Nothing else looks so sexy 😁 or is so comfortable, at speed you hit the sweet spot and this is where to shoe excels 👍 I'll leave my thoughts about marathon distance on Strava or this will turn into a ramble!

O gosh Ed. I love the Liberate nitro for speed sessions and tempo next% flyease and the alphafly for race day. In the case on the wet I found the grip too good on the Liberate nitro. Like a suction cup on the wet road. Decisions decisions!

I've had the Deviate Nitro Elite for a while now and so far I love it. I don't think I'll ever try the Fast R. That design is just not for me.

I actually picked up a rock in the deviate elite. It was hard to get out. I find the fast-r a little squishy, it's not clear if I would benefit from a full marathon, it seems a little slower than the vapor fly. I find that I enjoy running the deviate elite for faster work but might still run faster in the vapor fly. But I liked it for non-technical trails races. It's more stable than the vapor fly but has nice cushion. Still on the fence on the fast-r, but it seems it can be a good fit for a long run shoe.

You didn't mention it, but at least visually it looks like the Fast-R is quite rockered and quite far back (I think that is late stage - I get late/early stage rocker confused) while the Deviate Elite isn't rocked much at all, like the Deviate Nitro 2, is that one of the key differences?? I have the DN2 and it feels very flat under foot compared to other shoes I'm used to like the Endorphin Pro 3 and Mach 4, I'm not saying that's good or bad, just different and will suit different people.

Also, that would be so awesome, if you do that I’m definitely watching lol. I am trying to find a nice running shoe tho bc I work at a mechanic/tire shop and that crap is so hard on my feet, legs and back, So it would be awesome to have something super comfortable for run days after work and even on the weekend

Sometimes I wonder if these super shoes are ment for us mere mortals... It feels like some of these shoes are like lending your Ferrari out to your grandmother so she can drive 4 km to her bingo. Meaning a lot of performance totaly wasted on someone who cant use it. I guess sometimes it's worth mentioning if a shoe is worth buying for someone who runs a 6min/km at their best day.
