I’m so glad my dad kept his 84 Pro Performer BMX. It’s mine now. I’m only 16 and I get a lot offers when I’m riding it with my friends. Eddie is super RAD. and my dad too for giving it to me.

Yes we do…I remember as a kid stationed in Japan with my dad when they did the GT Pro Tour Europe. They were in Japan just off the base we were stationed at and I got to meet Eddie Fiola and Shaun White (the BMX Guy) and there was another guy I can’t remember. I recall they were so uncomfortable around the Japanese when they’d do autographs cause they couldn’t understand em and when me and my friends showed up they were at ease..there were Americans there…lol…we got to hang with em a little longer because they could talk to us and they were polite about the military. It was a day I’ll never forget. I’d like to get in touch with him and see if he’d remember that…he’d almost have to since we were the only Americans there.

And GT bikes as well.i know he was sponsored. Don't think GT paid him,cause he helped design the Performer.that's what I've heard.

GT sold a Pro Performer because of this. To me. In 1987. The best of times. I loved that bike as if it was made of pure gold. It was like I was in the magazines too after I got it. Awesome bikes to this day.

Always loved those GT Performers back in the 80s. That and the Skyway were lush
@MrJackcorgi2 жыл бұрын
Turning the pages of BMX plus and BMX action and remember being amazed at the tricks but really lusting after those bicycles. The GT pro performers and skyway were my favorite. Skyway does occationally release retro frames but limited and kind of expensive. For Bmx I always wanted the HUTCH pro racer with 3 piece cranks and the HUTCH bear trap pedals. HUTCH has also started releasing retro spec frames and forks and have large sizes as well. All the bikes listed above were way out of my price range at the age I was,lol.

I had a quarter pipe back then. Looking back I can't believe we rode those things that narrow 😲 I had a pro performer too. Yellow with blue skyway tuff 2, redline flight cranks, acs rotor and potts mod. Frame and fork standers totally decked out.

Dude when I got stateside from Japan after their tour there I bought the hot pink one. My dad teased the hell out of me but I had to have it. It was all decked out and had the white mags. They made the bike so heavy when I’d do land trucks I went up to do a cherry picker and caught my leg in the break line and broke my foot. I got better, took the mags off And put graphite spokes on her…lol…made it a ton lighter seemed like.

Saw the flying banana and Andy Ruffell here in Belfast way back in the early 80's as a wee sprog, great memories of it. When I see what riders can do nowadays compared to then, it blows me away but this is where it all began.

I remember sending a fan letter to Eddie back in the early '80s and he wrote back! Watching these old videos reminds me of how cool quarter pipe riding was, but also how cheesy the '80s were! All that breakdancing mixed with streetstyling!

Im watching this video, and I notice the extra long rear cable because there's no rotor on the bike, thats where the bar spin came from Im guessing to untangle the cable, then after they invented the rotor the bar spin stuck and became a part of his and Martin's style!

I don't know very much about the history of BMX. Does anyone know --- did those Huffy bikes that started coming out in the '70s start the whole BMX trend? Or, were the Huffy bikes just following the BMX bike styling?

Extra long cables, so you'd maybe get 1 full spin, then you'd have to reverse it as you rode out of the trick.

Was this before or after Rad was filmed? If so, did GT give him permission to ride a Mongoose bike in the movie, or was a GT bike actually used with Mongoose badging? 🤔
@Colombia367903 жыл бұрын
No, this was 1984. RAD was filmed in 1986. The movie was based on his life, as you can see, they hired an actor that looked just like Eddie. I'm pretty sure that the heads over at Mongoose sponsored a lot more money into that movie, then GT did, so they had to use the Mongoose as the star bike, but every other bike, especially in the beginning of the film were GT Performers. The Karate Kid also used a Mongoose. They were around longer, so naturally they had more money and connection's in Hollywood at that time.

Man I miss these early days of BMX freestyle they had so much STYLE and Pizazz nowadays the riders are boring as fk! No style just some skill and same trick over and over like double back flip to a tail whip to a double tail whip to a front flip to a triple tail whip hey now a flip whip and he finishes up with a 360 double tail whip. Next guy: triple tail whip to a backflip to a 360 tail whip to a no hand front flip to a double tail whip fkn boring as fk 🤣 😂
