Eddie got promoted 3 times with Bournemouth, also kept them in the league in his first 6 months in charge when they started the season on -17 points. He didn't make them worse over time either, the season they were relegated there were 11, count them, 11 players who would have started most games, out injured, and If it hadn't been for a absolute howler in the Villa game when that "goal " wasn't given they would have stayed up. Also he has been out of the game as you put it for all of 16 months, and he would knowing his management style, have spent that time working on developing his system which we will no doubt see the effects from in the next few weeks and months. His record for developing young players was incredible, so much so that the bigger clubs would often loan young players to Bournemouth as they knew they would get a better player back than had left on loan. As for his record in the transfer market, he was far better than you are giving him credit for, picking out Ibe is just a lazy stat, why not pick out Ake? Much easier to pick one not so good signing over the many really good signings, Ramsdale, Brooks, just another couple for example. Newcastle will be getting a better manager and a dedicated manager, far more than their fans realize, he will keep them up, there is no better manager I can think of to do a better job with the current crop of players they have. What they do down the road will no doubt bring in a "big name", but it will have been Howes efforts that will turn this team, and maybe even Newcastle as a club, around. These are my personal opinions and no doubt others will see things differently, thats what makes football just amazing compared to any other sport.

£250 million over that amount of time in charge isn’t a lot. They were in league two when he took over and he kept them in the premier league for 5 years. There’s plenty of teams bigger than Bournemouth who haven’t achieved half as much.
@jamesfretwell15113 жыл бұрын
Im a nufc fan, and I seem to remember Bournemouth playing very attractive football under Howe. He was highly rated until Bournemouth got relegated, not really all his doing neither, if you factor in all the injuries to important players etc, and he didn't exactly have a great squad to dip into, once injuries started to pile up. I think nufc have made a good move employing Howe, because he will put everything into getting the club stabilised.

@jonarific85043 жыл бұрын
He also bought Trippier, Mee, Ings and Charlie Austin during his 'failed' stint at Burnley. He also bought basically the entire Bournemouth squad that made good in the premier League from league one. Id say his success rate is way better than the vast majority of managers with Ibe and probably Brad Smith are the ones that are constantly referenced, even solanke who is currently leading the line hugely well in the championship, is still only 24, and was judged in the prem as a back up utility striker on the wing / up top behind Wilson and king when they were in the prem. Compare his transfer success rate to even say Ferguson or guardiola with all the money in the world and I'd say it compares favourably.

Howe and Wilder have very similar achievements and downfalls. Both deserve a chance at a mid table club at least. Wilder brought Sheff utd from league 1 almost to the CL places. Howe brought Bournemouth from league 2 to the edge of Europe. Wilder only managed 2 seasons in the PL. The second season his tactics had been worked out. Everyone had a plan to beat them. Coupled with a crippling injury crisis and a star player (Lundstrom) wanting to leave and run down his contract. Also buying an overpriced underperforming striker from Liverpool. Howe lasted I can't remember how many seasons but he became the longest serving PL manager. While playing attacking exciting football at a club that should not have been able to compete. They got relegated due to a severe injury crisis. A star player (Fraser) wanting to leave and run down his contract. And buying an overpriced underperforming striker from Liverpool. They could be twins

Don’t forget this is what people were saying not too long ago: Eddie Howe did not seem to make any tactical change to adopt a more attacking approach. They did not look as if they were going to score at all until towards the end, when they abandoned their principles out of desperation and started pumping the ball into the box. I do not like to criticise managers, because I have never managed or coached myself. But I wonder if Howe has maybe run out of ideas.
@maxine27983 жыл бұрын
@M I imagine not many. I hope he does well but we all know why he’s there. Good enough. Available. Reasonably “progressive “. Waiting for the big name all these projects require. Don’t forget Martinez win the FA Cup with Wigan. You can win things with small clubs and Howe didn’t. I don’t think the terrible new owners of Newcastle will be happy with someone who is “well liked in football” rather than a winner. He’s there for a year tops
@Easilytriggered3 жыл бұрын
I would say transfer wise he backed himself to transform any young player, this didnt work in the case of ibe and solanke at least. Hes been away from football and had some time to reflect so now seems like a good time. Hopefully for him and newcastle he can make the right signings to create a spine to build from.

Interesting, I hadn't considered this as a long-term deal more than using Howe to get the most out of the current crop of players which he is well-suited to while they're slowly replaced and once the team is genuinely an elite squad replace him with a top-level manager. (assuming he doesn't prove himself capable of managing a top-level squad to that level in which case he stays ofc)

Howe? I think they sold Ake and Wilson after he left, Fraser left for free, Ritchie was more of a lateral move than someone who had grown too big for the club. @jonarific85043 жыл бұрын
It's interesting watching these things when you actually know about a club/manager/player clearly a lot more than the people supposedly imparting knowledge/analysis. That's such an obvious nonsense statement on worse players when he left. The Burnley sojourn was also well covered and could easily be picked up by old sports news reports (he left for family reasons). He also bought some v good players to Burnley that contributed to their rise, despite having a so so league position. The style Bournemouth played in did change during their premiership stay. He became more defensive/counter attacking after the first season. He also more commonly played as a 4-4-1-1 that changed to a 4-2-3-1 in attack than a 4-4-2. The financial fair play stuff was also limited to the back end of the championship promotion season and was largely down to financial reporting timelines than some kind of man city/psg spending. Maxim denim remains a not a top tier rich owner despite his oligarch title and bournemouth's finances we're more akin to Burnley than say villa or Everton. They spent a lot but then you have to think it was basically a league one side in the prem so in terms of net spend it was bound to inflate that. The demotion season was injury strewn but so we're the two seasons before. You had to think players like Lewis cook and David brooks were I jury prone and why Bournemouth could afford them, but it also raised questions on the coaching and lack of investment in the training facilities. In terms of coaching very few players have had better careers after Howe. Only danjuma and he was mostly injured, and solanke but he didn't start behind king and wilson. Jury is probably still out on Ake but I suspect we'll see him elsewhere to try and secure a national team place (when you are behind van dijk doesn't help!).
