As a politics graduate that has specialised in the Middle East, I just want to point out how well researched and brilliant that piece of journalism was. It’s so important to explain these issues to football fans in a concise palatable way so that everyone can understand the facts. Maybe the athletic can do more than sports journalism. Or can link sports to finance, politics, business and society in a way that has never been done before. Especially as footballers become wealthier, more famous, influential and socially conscious like Rashford.

As a Newcastle fan, you have summarised my feelings very well. First and foremost, I want Mike Ashley out of the club. He has somehow managed to suck the joy out of supporting my beloved club, and every shred of hope that appears (think the great Rafael Benitez) he manages to crush. I am not asking for an owner who will turn us into title-winners - all I want is a club that has a genuine desire to improve and compete, rather than simply survive. However, there is then the issue of the new owners being one of the worst human rights violators in the world. I feel it’s unfair that our club is singled out - the UAE don’t exactly have a sparkling reputation, and there has been plenty of other dealings between Saudi and the UK. Why wasn’t human rights an issue when we were selling them weapons? But while this annoys me, I am perfectly aware that doesn’t make their purchase of Newcastle any less morally scrupulous. If you were to ask me “If you could stop the takeover now, would you?”, then I would have no idea how to answer. I would certainly be disappointed if it didn’t happen, and we were still stuck with Ashley, but I wish it was anybody other than the Saudis. Maybe, if it goes through, the Saudis are signing up for a higher degree of accountability that goes with a higher public profile. They’ll be forced to continue opening up the country, and will be discouraged from any further human rights violations. I would not hesitate to use my platform as a Newcastle fan and season ticket holder to protest against any wrongdoing. I hope I have managed to get across the dilemma that the vast majority of Newcastle fans are facing.

How to you feel about tourist and plastic fans coming in though?

Nicely put, as a Newcastle fan I really don't know what to think about all the fingers being pointed at the takeover and Newcastle fans. Of course I don't want someone who is morally compromised to own Newcastle any other owner would have been better, we're not looking for overnight riches we just don't want to be a yo-yo club doing the bare minimum to pull in PL TV money. I just want to enjoy watching our team play again.
@theskankingpigeon9654 жыл бұрын
Not to take away from the rest of what you're saying, because it's well written, but the human rights violations WERE an issue when we were selling them weapons. That's why we protested and gave the govt. so much shit, so that we would STOP selling them weapons. So please don't use that as a comparison. A lot of us were outraged by that just as much or even more than the Newcastle deal.

It speaks to the quality of the channel that they can summarize the complex politics of saudi arabia so well when they primarily prioritize football news and tactics. Very well done!!

Imagine Martin Tyler's starting lineup in FIFA 21: "Oblak starts in goal. De Ligt and Varane are the centreback pair, Kante and De Bruyne in central midfield, with Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe being the main strikers today..."

I utterly detest everything about Modern Football. It is a sport for the Morally Bankrupt.
@johnbull15684 жыл бұрын
Same here. I used to be fan until I worked in a restaurant that players frequented, and their behaviour put me off the sport completely. Seeing how the sport has gone in the 25 or so years since then, I made the right decision. It's thoroughly rotten at every level.

just asking, did people have this discussion when Qatari owners took over PSG? I mean talking about facts, they're exactly the same. Authoritarian regimes with no democracy and human rights controversies.
@jinjunliu24014 жыл бұрын
There probably were discussions in France. I think it was out of our radar because it's not a premier league club so not that much English discussions

Difference is they didn't have such a high profile murder linked to them. Everyone knows he ordered that journalist to be killed. People are willing to be ignorant if it's not in their eyeline.

Partially because the Qataris are helping to kick up the current stink.
@yusuffulat69544 жыл бұрын
That was very early on in the 'Arab dictator purchases European club' phase I'm supposing. It was more novel and the Qataris weren't really in the public consciousness as much. Could be wrong though.
@Feras.Alghamdi4 жыл бұрын
Cristiano Gusmao So it was simply sportwashing. 2022 bribes allegations, 2022 workers conditions, Bein Sports monopoly, and many other things. That only thing I’m saying is, if Qatar and UAE could buy a football club, saudis could to. Either all of us speak about all of them equally or we should shut the F up and watch them destroy the sport.
