On ground strafing, a hazardous occupation, Eddie said it was "the time of my life." On striking an enemy gunpit: "The most amusing little party I ever attended." Rickenbacker and Nungesser are definitely my two favorite pilots. Smart, fearless, funny, and patriots.

Nungesser was a ladies' man. Rickenbacker was a family man.

I’m reading his autobiography. Unbelievable. He was not Pershing’s driver as mentioned in the history books. He did drive other military leaders at that time though. Survived countless near death experiences before, during and after WW1! He did so much, invented, designed, machinery, cars, planes. He owned car companies (Started Rickenbacker line of cars), Indianapolis 500 Speedway, and airlines. And I’m only 1/2 way into the book.

It has long been rumored that Rickenbacker shot down more planes than he was credited for. He was behind enemy lines and there were no witnesses and gun cameras had not been invented yet. He never claimed credit for them and never confirmed or denied the rumors. He was more interested in training his men and teaching them to act as a team. He was very successful in that.

His memoirs -- Fighting the Flying Circus -- describes the incredible detail that ALL aviators went thru to get confirmation on a kill , including statements and eyewitness testimony from the Germans. I would imagine pilots on both sides had more kills than they were credited with. Makes you stop and think, did The Red Baron have more than 80 kills? Probably.

Rick never drove for Pershing. He drove for Billy Mitchell before he got into the air. Check it out in his autobiography: "The truth is, I never did drive for the General (Pershing)."

I lived in Switzerland back in the 70s, and there are at least five different villages with the name of Rickenbach.

I have heard accounts of the men who flew these type planes switching out one of the 303 guns for one that fired an 11mm round that had phosphorus bearing rounds that would ignite observation balloons instead of just going through them.
