I was about 13-14 when E&TC was released/I first caught it on cable tv, and although the story’s not ABOUT Bruce Springsteen, there are definite similarities in sound and subject matter, and it’s set on the Jersey shore (I live not very far from the location where E&TC shot the bar scenes, the old Tony Mart’s in Somers Point. Also, I can’t be sure but the scene when Eddie is showing Wordman that rock and roll isn’t a complicated musical form, not difficult to play, but not necessarily easy to play well, looks like it was shot from atop one of the two-story houses on the bay on the road into Ocean City, NJ, which is not far from the old Tony Mart’s. For clarity, I’ll just add for those who don’t know the Southern New Jersey shore that well - and why would you if you’re not from around here - Ocean City, NJ is a dry town, no alcohol sold within the city limits, if you were in OC with your family and needed a night out away form the kids, you’d probably get a babysitter for the kids and take the wife out to Somers Point for some rock n roll and some boozy fun 🤩.). Although he was already a big star by 1982-83, Bruce hadn’t yet reached the heights he’d reach with Born In The USA, and he was still largely considered a Jersey Shore Guy, he hadn’t yet made his move to the west coast, etc etc… I see that banner behind Eddie In this clip, the one that says “SPRING…”… that was shot that way very deliberately… Not a coincidence. I’m not saying it means anything necessarily, and it’s not a complaint or criticism, but the filmmakers definitely had a Springsteen “fixation” or whatever you’d call it… Back then, it’s hard to imagine now, but there was a definite air of mystery surrounding Bruce, he took advice from those he’d hired to guide him and help him with the non-musical side of the business, especially Jon Landau, who seems to me to be a 100% humorless individual, but he did a good job managing Springsteen. Anyway, point is, Bruce didn’t saturate the market with compilations or live albums, he was reluctant to do videos, up to then he only had 2 vids in rotation on MTV, a clip made for ‘Atlantic City’ (1982) in which he made no appearance, and one from a 1978 concert in Phoenix, AZ for ‘Rosalita’ (which, iirc, only started making the MTV rotation just before Born In The USA came out, there was massive expectations for Born In The USA, esp after he’d chosen to release the Nebraska album without the band backing him up), and he hadn’t toured since The River Tour ended in 1981; it’s hard to imagine a time when Bruce wasn’t the huge star he’s been for decades now. But it’s a moment I seem to recall well, possibly because I was at a formative age, curious, and I absolutely loved Springsteen’s sound. And as far as I was (and still am) concerned, Eddie & The Cruisers, added much to the “mythology” and/or “mystique” of the Jersey Shore, and in my mind there will always be a connection between Eddie & The Cruisers and Bruce. The fact that Bruce seemed to be a bit anxious about his forward path, especially since he was very ambivalent about stardom and what it can do to a person’s mental health (Elvis had died not long before, just a few years, and that was a huge deal for rock-n-rollers, especially for those who’d put Elvis on a pedestal, such as Bruce seemed to), seems to inform Eddie’s story. The struggle between the things the record company wants an artist to do to increase sales (something the artist must mull over himself), and what the artist feels is good for his art, is told within the film, and it parallels Springsteen’s career outlook at that time. I’ll stop rambling now. Thanks for posting, Uploader!
