Yes! I would be sitting in the first 5 rows & the sound of Mikes bass rattled your insides & brain. You could literally feel your internal organs vibrating & the bass just punched you in the chest. You had to be there, but it was so intense! And Dave coming out with his jumping off the risers & Kung fu kicks, belting out primal howling & singing , Alex pounding the shit out of his drums & Eddie of course on another dimension of wild unhinged guitar playing. All at the same time! Maximum intensity! 😮🤟🏼😎🤗♥️ saw them every time they played! My aunt owned a ticket outlet & would save me seats by the stage to everything for about $8

Very well done, and I totally agree that the inner tensions in the band on the Fair Warning album were evident, which is probably what made the record so great and my personal favorite as well. The only question I have is the knocking sound at the beginning of the Beat It solo. Millenials and Zoomers don't realize in the late 70's that hard rock was almost dead and disco was dominating radio --- bands like Black Sabbath and KISS were becoming stale and people weren't buying the records anymore --- Dave and Eddie literally saved rock music and made it fun again --- setting up the entire "hair metal" scene of the 80's
@guitarmeetsscience7 ай бұрын
Absolutely spot on Fred! And then again in the early '80s a lot of synth-driven pop was threatening to dominate. Again, Van Halen saved the day by fighting fire with fire essentially. Of course that was not Eddie's motive, but they kind of did it just by chance. So then the metal bands started incorporating keyboards and the rest is history. Or really I guess pop and hard Rock and metal all kind of played nicely with each other after that point.

I saw Van Halen in 1982 at the Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio during the Diver Down tour. They opened with “Romeo Delight” - BOOOM- Fireworks! Guitar slamming! Drums crashing! DLR does his signature split leap off the drum stand! DLR runs up, grabs the mike, and shouts: “I FORGOT THE F*$&%ING WORDS!” We all laughed, then the crowd started singing. DLR picked it up and the rest of the concert was phenomenal. Eddie played “Little Guitars” on that classic miniature Les Paul and blew me away. Sadly, Hara Arena was destroyed by a tornado in 2019, and Eddie died in 2020. That closed a chapter of my life.

Saw the Fair Warning tour on I believe August of 1981 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati. I sat dead center and as far back against the very back wall that you could get but didn’t care because I was seeing the Mighty VH at 12 years old! As far as the previous year when they appeared after the Who tragedy and the police making all arrests I remember Dave during a musical breakdown talking to the crowd reference the police but quickly changed course to talk about a girl he met in the local Cincinnati bar probably realizing that taunts against the police wasn’t wise. But after the Who, the city was on edge and asking your parents if you could see VH at Riverfront was almost a gar untended NO. The arrests at the previous show after the Who made sense especially if you lived in the area. The city was so paranoid and facing multiple lawsuits that The Carpenters, or Air Supply would have had multiple arrests. FYI: I am not a fan boy that makes cheesy comments for a like or a comment back but I do have to say that by far this is one of my favorite channels for so many reasons. So comprehensive and well produced. I love how the storylines and the inclusion of the videos that just tie everything together perfectly! Dave took alotta 💩 for having the band play pop songs in the bars BUT that's what they had to do when they play the bars . That's what they bars were there for drinks and dancing . Dave has always been a better PR man than Hagar .

Excellent points! They definitely paid their dues - and Dave played a big part in paving their way to success.

Dave may not have been what you would call musically brilliant, but without his influence, Eddie's songwriting suffered, growing more formulaic as time went on.

also, it wouldve been godly if someone lugged a heavy camera to one of their backyard party sets. 4 hours of covers, all Van Halen-ized wouldve sold millions, easy.

I was there Van Halen and Black Sabbath and Van Halen didn't blow Black Sabbath off the stage Sabbath played we sold are soles for rock and roll album. The best and in 78 I went to every rock concert that came To Massachusetts.

The Roth years are the only years. 4th generation Californian born in the 60s. Seen Van Halen 3 times outdoors, 5 times indoors.

Came here to say this.. Hold Your Head Up is almost as important in the pantheon of rock as any single during the 70's. Love this walk down memory lane though and Fair Warning is my fave of the Roth era.

It is a great track! I know Argent lol sometimes when I'm doing these videos I think my brain and mouth sometimes run on different circuits. I'm glad you enjoyed it - and I'm on the same page when it comes to fair warning.... Great album from start to finish

Sammy Hagar years were boring, let’s face it back in the day you can’t replace Dave it’s just like replacing Robert Plant our Steven Tyler some singers have that character, I’m sure it worked for some bands but certain bands you can’t replace certain singers.

Yeah no, Sammy was way more talented and as far as Eddie went , he was in heaven bc he had a singer who would do what he wanted and could also hit those notes without making gimmicky noises , I love Dave, but Sammy is the MVP

Nothing comes close to The Mighty Van Halen. 1985 was like a funeral. Just like Andy Griffith without Barney Fife.
@andrewreed13296 ай бұрын
the band needed rhythm guitar, in the studio eddie would play awesome rhythm, but live there is a hole. also their is a reliance on covers as their song writing was not the best.. they just fell short in a few areas, which makes most albums feel a bit of a mixed bag
@guitarmeetsscience6 ай бұрын
That's definitely an interesting take. I'm more particular toward the four piece sound with a single guitar, but they did use it to great effect when Sammy joined because Sammy is also a pretty ripping guitarist. They complimented each other - so I guess even if early VH had a guitar player that worked really well with Eddie it might have been a pretty explosive sound live. Very interesting take Thanks for that

Diver Down was the last great VH album. 1984 was a let down,the sound was thin and treble heavy.
