Everyone looks at Christopher McCandless story as one that should push people to go out, in the wild, alone, to find freedom. No one looks at the message Christopher sent: a person can find him/herself struggling to live in this society (a capitalistic and globalized one, where one consumes to always consume more - i.e. buying brand new phones when your own is still working, or a new car because it is more beautiful than the one you have) but you cannot change the society from outside, alienating yourself in the wild, with no contact with that "society". Christopher tried to go back in that society, he built his own awareness, he understood he needed people and things around him to be happy, not the extreme and sometimes empty wildness. And as you can see, he remains 113 days in the wild. But travels for 2 long years, meeting people, not feeling alone at all. To sum up, I believe you can be free everywhere, if your soul is free. You can love others, if you love yourself. And traveling is a way of being free and of loving, with no necessities to "close" yourself in the wild. And believe me, though you may sometimes decide to travel alone (so with no people you know) you will never be alone along the route, as you will meet those who will make up your traveling days and experiences - and everything will make more sense and will be more amazing. "Happiness only real when shared" C.J. McCandless.

I love this so much. I really want to raise my son to distance himself from societies pressures and expectations and just find freedom to be himself. I was raised to work, to go to school to make money, money was all that mattered to my parents, and I never remember being taught to be happy above all else. I don't care if he lives to be 90 and has nothing but a shack to show for it, as long as he smiled, laughed, danced, and loved. There's so much more to the world than being what society expects of you ❤

Had been raising my daughter like this, she loved me very much, until my lovely sister and her husband took her away from me at the age of 8. We dont see eachother anymore since i cant remember when. This is killing me. Trying to stay strong, make some money to hire a good lawyer etc. I have been so naive, could never believe how horrible and selfish people can be. Never had any enemies or people to hate. Now i am drowning in hate, i can say it is probably the worst feeling of all. God bless you and your son. Happy new year, all the best to you two!

This song means a lot to me. Me and brother grew up together in a small town that slowly grew into a tourist spot. We watched this movie and almost envied McCandless in a way. We used to talk about real freedom. We both had a crap childhood. We liked the idea of living life for everything it had to offer. In November of 2020, my brother couldn't take it anymore. He ended his life. I've moved on. Had kids, got married, got an education, made something of myself, but I hear this song constantly. He missed out on the true beauty of life. Love and happiness, something that was so hard to come by for us, he could have had it. People stay strong. Life is rough, you may not feel like you fit in to modern society, but I am living proof. Keep going. I'm still here. I'm happy with what I've accomplished, I feel free. I have two beautiful daughters to bring up better than I was brought up. I just wish I could have got that through to him. God rest your soul Dakota. I will always love ya brother.

That's exactly what I wanna do as well. I'm turning 18 tomorrow but I have always been more mature than other kids my age. I know it's cringe to say that but I have been through a lot in my life that was really hard. Horrible parents and I have been broke my whole life. The only true happiness I feel is with my friends, being in nature, and being with animals. I want to travel more than anything else. I want to see the world and meet new people and cultures. I don't care if I have to go back packing.

This songs means so much. It will go down in history books with music greats like Mozart, Brahms, and others. Simple in these times, ignored by many because of message, but full of truth, meaning, and spirit for tomorrow's society to listen, learn, and follow. When I feel the throng of society pulling at me and drawing me into its mesh, I listened to this song, and remember what is really important.

I haven't heard this song in a while, but with all the madness going on in the UK right now, I'm reminded of this more than ever. There are always those who look to take from you, your life, liberty, and happiness. Each generation has it's role to play in pushing back against such. Wherever you are, whenever you are, whoever you are, you are a unique human being who is always capable of love. There can never be too much love, life, positivity.... Respect and care for yourself and one another. You've got this! 🙏❤️

Never heard a song that I relate to as much as this one. The whole album is incredible. Every single song is full of ripe emotions we all can relate to. I've lived in Alaska for 49 years. Very much aware of the bus. It was recently moved because of so many people being entangled with the movie and trying to make the trek without proper knowledge of how harsh, yet stunningly beautiful Alaska is. Alaska takes a person's breath away. g
