Thanks Eddie! Great advice and exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve been playing banjo for about 8 months. Sometimes I just think I’ll never get beyond 120bpm cleanly. I also remind myself I didn’t think I would get past 80bpm :-) Thanks!!!!

Another instructor qualification that should be included in your decision to work with them is that if you are left handed they have some actual experience with working with left handers. We think and visualize differently than right handers. When asking if an instructor can teach left handers the typical answer is “oh yeah. No problem.” That usually means “no, I have not and I have no clue”. To be successful I have had to search out instructors that are willing to put in the time and energy to communicate left handedly. In essence teach them while they are teaching me. Most can’t make this mental transition so if you are left handed plan on putting in the time self teaching. Eddie Collins is the only instructor I have found that has a unilateral narrative that provides a platform for both left and right handers equally.

Really good video, thanks. Y husband decided to learn guitar so he bought one on line and learned from KZbin, then got a local teacher in person. He decided it would be fun if we played together. I said ha ha no. He pestered me until I joked that I should play banjo, because that was the most annoying string instrument I could think of. I thought it was right up there with accordion and bagpipes. He bought me a banjo. And here we are. The only thing I know about bluegrass was “it grows in Kentucky.” Husband’s guitar teacher is happy because he also teaches banjo but has zero banjo students because-- it’s not popular here in Silicon Valley. Sadly for him, I’m probably not going to get very good because I’m also an artist and equestrian and have a connective tissue disease that makes me prone to trigger finger, but I’m having a good time messing around. That might not be enough for many people, but it’s enough for me.

Thanks for sharing your story. You'd be surprised how many banjo players are in the tech industry. If you haven't already seen them, check my videos for the "Easy" version of Dueling Banjos. There's one for banjo and one for guitar. It wouldn't be long before the two of you could play it together and really annoy your neighbors!!!

Tricky not to get frustrated when things don't come easy, but if we focus on the joy it brings us and doing the right things, we can overcome a lot of stuff!

Great encouragement Eddie! I’ve found that what I lack in natural talent I make up in “fretboard luck”….hoping I land in the right place at the right time. And wouldn’t you know it, The more I practice the luckier I get 😂
@EddieCollinsMusic2 жыл бұрын
I like that, "The more I practice the luckier I get." Make sure the "focus" part gets in there and you'll be able to rely less on luck and just know you've got it!

Wise words Eddie. Timing was always my downfall. Focused daily practice and Apps like StrumMachine really help overcome my errant ways.
@EddieCollinsMusic2 жыл бұрын
We are lucky to live in an age with tools like Strum Machine. Once you gain a feel for playing with a beat, you want to "capture" that feeling and apply it to other songs.

Next video, how to overcome stage fright. I’m a closet banjo player. Seems every time I try to play for someone my fingers become mush! Really frustrating!
@EddieCollinsMusic2 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion Chuck. The trick is to feel as though you aren't playing for anyone even though you are. Granted, easier said than done. I'll see about putting together a video on it at some point.
@keithbanther33852 жыл бұрын
Man...that's me too! Sonny Osborne said practice practice then practice some more. I've gotten a lot better with it & Sonny was right ofcourse. The muscle memory in your fingers will help you. When you've played a song enough & you play in front of someone you start to get nervous & worry about messing up your fingers will just take over.every time that happens you'll become more & more confident.atleast that's how it has been for me....keep at it,you'll get there!.
