Conan's empathy is unmatched both in the literal sense but also in a comedic sense - he cares about the comedy most of all, reminds me of Norm Macdonald at times (perhaps why he loved him as a guest) - He wants the funniest thing to happen even if it's somehow detrimental to himself. And that's just respect for the craft. I think he respects the talent around him and wants them to succeed as well, if he can help it.

I attended a taping of James Cordon’s show in 2018. I was visiting friends in LA and it was free. I’d never been to a show taping before, but I found it odd that between takes and off camera, he didn’t speak to a single person. He was glued to his phone the entire time and didn’t make eye contact with a single staffer, even the ones walking up to him to touch up his hair or give him something. The whole energy was “I don’t wanna be here” and then boom the charm came back on as soon as they started recording again

One of the biggest moments of Colbert for me personally is when he asked Keanu what happens when we die, perhaps setting up for a more or less simple answer of how Reeves feels about the afterlife, but instead it allowed Reeves to draw on his experiences and respond "I know that the people who love us will miss us", and while that may not seem particularly deep to some people to those who have experienced such close familial loss (including both Reeves and Colbert), it was a deeply poignant moment of wisdom that isn't often heard in a late night interview. I had recently lost my brother at the time that clip surfaced and it hit me in the same way it hit Colbert in that moment. Sure I may not laugh at all his segments, but I really appreciate that moment happening.

Graham Norton despite not being a daily night time tv show is the gold standard of what these shows should try to be. Seeing 5-6 huge movie stars, directors and comedians together talk about Hollywood and reminisce is something that is much more entertaining than solo one on one interviews. You get to see the interaction not just between the host and stars but also of the guests amongst themselves. I think it's really put the death knell in late night TV - I've gotten used to not watching colbert / daily show / seth (at least the opening parts I used to watch - I never watched the guests with very few exceptions, and the views on youtube of the various segments of their shows show that no one cares about the guests now) and I'm kindof glad to not hear the same take on the news every day from 3 different sets of writers, usually 2 of which make the exact same joke. Bring back the late night of old - conan or craig ferguson - shows that were legitimately funny, and not just the news re-hashed in a snarky way.

I really think the fascination with late night started going down when social media started becoming more popular. Because before, it felt like talk shows were rare times when you could watch a celebrity being themselves, and hear about their stories. Colbert’s greatest strength and draw is himself. His current show completely strips him of that. Replace him on any ordinary episode of the late show with somebody else and nothing changes. The show feels so alienating for some reason. That’s why the quarantine episodes resonated with so many people: with everything else stripped down, he’s allowed to shine. I am part of the Craig Ferguson cult following. It was a late night show where, on one side of the host, there was the co-host - a gay robot skeleton. On the other side, there were two guys in a horse suit. The guest, a famous actor would come on, the movie they're in would be mention once and then Craig would ask them something along the lines of "So? How's it been for you? Have you been swimming a lot?" and before that his monologue would have like a minute of silence after a weird joke. True punk version of the late night formula.

idk 80 percent of the video was just him talking over clips of late night hosts talking. It sorta relates to what he’s saying but usually it’s only when he’s finishing a point that the clip on screen will be relevant. Evolved and improved is a stretch, consistent with his past videos? Definitely. I feel like this is a step into what felt safe and easy to deliver and didn’t require any filming, just mostly reading his script and editing. Which is pretty basic on both ends.

The podcast boom of the past few years has been great when it comes to celebrity interviews. There's no overblown sketches, no getting dolled up to talk to someone for 15 minutes, no having to wait until the audience stops unrealistically laughing. These interview podcasts are more casual, personal and feel like real conversations. Those that film their podcasts show that the guests usually just wear their comfort clothes for when they're not working. The conversations are more focused on the guest as a person than as a celebrity. They just seem to be far more charming to me than all these late night shows. There are a lot of good interview podcasts, but my go to is Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum which I feel perfectly captures the overall vibe of these podcasts.

Enjoyed every second with him and Tom together on Smallville, and it was definitely a delightful surprise to stumble across his YT channel. His interview with Morena Bacarin was golden - was she always hiding that potty mouth, or was she infected by Ryan ? 😂

Seth Myers corrections and closer look is the only one I consistently watch. I like his humor and how he interacts with staff and writers plus his format is a lot less formal and comes off as more genuine. Corrections for the win!!! Honestly, everything else is trash. Most of the monologues involve stories of Trump or other people I’d rather not have living rent free in my brain. Having the late night guys on strike has helped me detox from the monologues on KZbin.

What's even more "Chad" is that Fallon was able to put on blackface in front of the Roots and it didn't end his career. So either the Root's are pussies for not cancelling him for being racist, or Fallon is a true mob b0$$ for coming out of it unscathed.

@Ivan Bitunjac what the person above me said, but it is very slang, a "Chad" is the ideal definition of a man, because people named Chad are known to be very cool.

18:41 This is something I've noticed about Seth Meyers as well, the way he integrates the crew and writers is great, it doesn't feel forced at all, they're just a bunch of friends and it really shows. Theres so many segments thats basically just shining a spotlight on the writers and rest of the crew. It's something that nobody else has replicated as well and I really enjoy it.

I would certainly credit Oliver and his crew as pioneering the modern shift to KZbin, because it wasn't JUST a little clip of a monologue they would upload the full primary segment which sometimes would be the entire episode. It helped broaden his platform despite being locked away to HBO, regardless if you agree with him and his team or not.

Not at all. Late-night shows were spiritual pillars of TV monoculture. There were 3 of them and everyone knew what they were and who hosted them. There are thousands of popular podcasts and if you asked a random person on the street who Marc Maron is, they'd probably have no idea.

@CoadyShay Жыл бұрын
@@doupard Podcasts and radio are not the same either. Radio has a fundamental urgency that podcasts do not have. The approach is completely different. Radio was largely local as well. Stations were designed to be embedded in the communities in which they operated. Podcasts lack place for the most part. They're disconnected from the world the listener lives in.

I've been lucky enough to go to the filming of three late night shows: Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers. At the time, I was a big Trevor Noah fan, but being in the studio with the different hosts changed my mind. Seth was the best host who actually cared about his audience. He spent the most time talking and answering audience questions and the warmth that he had for his audience felt really genuine. I wasn't a big fan of his before, but after that experience, he rose to the top for me.
