It’s the rat park theory. When rats were given things to do-not just basic needs like food and water but games, special little treats, companionship, etc-they turned down the drugs. Sometimes they tried them, but the other stuff was more rewarding than the drugs. The rats alone in a bare cage with nothing but the bare necessities to keep them living did the drugs. So actually giving the kids more pizza to keep them off drugs isn’t far off.

Very true! Also, bring in sponsors and therapists for ex-junkies that can further explain why people become addicts, the actual sciences around addiction (with anything, not exclusively just drugs/alcohol), what kids can do if they recognize they're becoming harmfully addicted to something, etc. However, that would also mean adults addressing things like systemic societal problems with things like mental health as well as a bunch of other things that encourage people to fall into addictions (including drugs), to begin with. Something extremely hard enough for adults to do with each other, since falling into addictions has always been over-generalized as part of a person's personal failings, and addressing things based off of it being systemic can often be seen as controversial for some people.

He had gotten arrested but he went to rehab and turned his life around and now helps inform kids and make sure they don’t get into the place he did. I remember going thru the DARE program in 6th grade. we had to sign a paper at the end promising we would never use drugs or alcohol. I wrote "I cannot promise I will never try drugs or alcohol in the future, but I learned some things from your classes." Sure enough age 17 comes around and I'm smoking pot, drinking beer, and doing mushrooms lol. However I can say the program definitely made me think about the consequences of drug abuse more and I never went overboard. So it wasn't a complete failure. We had guest speakers come in and talk about how they ruined their lives due to drug abuse. I don't know if DARE had such speakers nation wide, but it was certainly what impacted me the most.

Depends on how lazy the parents are. I'm guessing mommy and daddy never paid you much attention did they. I know lots of kids who look up to their father as a role model and do everything in their power to emulate them. You must of just had shite parents. Sorry for your luck. But don't feel bad most parent these days are shite so you are normal and you do fit in. I hope that dissuades any social anxiety you might now have because of this comment.

The best way to stop kids from doing drugs is *gasp* being honest with them. Say something like: you know, Drugs are actually pretty great. They make you feel amazing and it’s one of the best feelings in the world. However, some drugs have awful consequences and that really good feeling doesn’t last long. Then you get addicted and lose control, and need the drug. Half of your day will be spent shitting yourself, having aches and sweats. All of your relationships will fail. Your teeth will fall out and you will get welts on your face. So yeah, drugs do feel amazing, but they have to be taken in moderation. However some people can’t handle them and can’t moderate even if they think they can. If I was kid and heard that, and saw videos of crack heads- I wouldn’t do drugs. However “just say no” has the opposite effect and made me want to so drugs. Obviously my example speech only works with like meth, or heroine - the speech would need to be tweaked for marijuana as it’s not as dangerous. Also I feel like if you are just honest with kids and also are like - I just ask that you respect my wishes till you are 18. Then when you move out you can make your own choices, as long as you have a good relationship with your kid - they will be more willing to listen. But lying to them or trying to make drugs seem like this epic myth - does not work. Some countries have found success by telling kids “look drugs feel great. But when your brain is developing from teen years to young adult, drugs can weaken your development. So if you want to do drugs right on, but wait till you are in your 20s when your body has fully developed”. All of that is better then what D.A.R.E. was.

So pretty much you're saying do less drugs until you're 20 then do all the drugs you want. Also are you talking about like weed or hard drugs? I feel like doing hard drugs at 20 is worse then doing it in your teens. If you do it as a 20 year old you can lose a job, a house, and even go to jail.

I was on hefty amounts of painkillers throughout my childhood due to a disability that required annual surgieries, bodycasts and the painful physical therapy that followed them. My sisters school had a DARE program and she asked if painkillers count as drugs. These idiots confirmed but didn't think to specify it was okay if prescribed so she came home and told my mom they HAD to get rid of my drugs. Poor kid said I would ruin my life and get in trouble and was mad at mom for letting this happen. Lmao. My mom tried to clear it up for her. Mom explained I would be in too much pain to function without them so doctors, and in extension police, give an exception with this kind. So she went to school and told the whole class that her little sister does drugs but it was okay and it wouldn't get me in trouble. 😭😭

i went through a similar thing to your sister when i was a kid, except with my moms bipolar disorder medication. i was also too scared to ask if prescription medication was fine, because 1) they told us a swat team would come to our house if our parents did drugs and 2) my mom, not wanting to explain bipolar disorder medication to her 6 year old, referred to them as her "happy pills." i never told my parents this either, i literally never told anyone until like 4 years ago when it popped into my head one day

The best drug education I ever receive came from simply talking to people who did/do those drugs and asking open and honest questions about their experience. The only time it didn’t make me not want to do them was with weed, which severely helped my anxiety for many years before a finally quit. Most of the time if you ask someone with experience about the negatives they won’t be shy to share them with you- unless they are a dealer who also happens to hate you they don’t want you getting into something you’re not comfortable with and bad trip.

My dare program was pretty good. It was run mostly like a biology class where it was like "if you decide to do drugs, here are the consequences" and then it was about the cancer and other medical issues that can arise from doing drugs. It also focused mostly on cigarettes and alcohol from my memory, but this was all the way back when. It also wasn't shaming if you did, they were always like "hey, if you or someone you know is doing this stuff, talk to a trusted adult, we just want to make sure you're alright". The same issues did seem to arise, kids are gonna be lil'shits regardless of how much you educate them.

That would’ve been cool tbh. In my country, we did this thing called "Happy Harold" (now known as Healthy Harold) where we'd go to some place and learn about health shit from a giraffe puppet. Stuff like how junk food is bad for you, how alcohol and cigarette are bad. Mind you, I was only 6 at the time. He's going on about how cigarettes and smoking cause cancer, and I'm freaking way the hell out because both of my parents were smokers, and I didn't want them to die, so I was paying razor sharp attention. Eventually, he starts to change topic from cigarettes to something else, so I shot my hand up, because I had an important question: "What about bongs?" He stuttered for a few seconds, then moved on without answering me. That really upset me because I wanted to know.

in my experience thats the most effective method of preventing ppl from doing drugs. nothing scared me off coke more than my sister telling me her scary ass experience of doing coke with a guy she barely knew and then getting in a 200km/h car chase with him behind the wheel. nothing scared me off of smoking more than watching my grandma slowly die from lung cancer. nothing scares you straight better than watching someone you love reap the consequences of drugs and alcohol.
