I never could stand that trope in children's television (believe or not, it is a trope, there are a lot of old children's tv shows that have done this trope in at least one episode), where everyone is a dick and ignores the main character so they can build up the hype of the surprise party when it is revealed. Especially when they way too often play it off like the main character is in the wrong for being upset that everyone forgot his birthday. Like what a terrible message for kids.

Being one of the 2 directors (the Cavity Goon, James Murray was the other), was like being able to go to work - "play" - with some of the most fun, energetic people I've ever had the joy to create with. The stage which held "Flossmore Valley" was our sandbox and together we loved every week as we brought Timmy and his friends to life. Our goal was to be entertaining (my montra: "You can't teach somebody who isn't in the room: With T.V., if it's not fun or interesting, that "leaving the room" is just a remote click away.) and also personal, especially where it concerned our young viewers and what might have been challenges and victories in their lives. In my 45 years as a DGA director, this series is one of my very favorites.

Thank you so much for helping create this show. I have NVLD, so it was extremely hard for me to understand concepts, jokes, etc in other shows, but Timmy the Tooth was perfectly fine for me! I have distinct memories of two songs but one sticks out more, the Itchy Polkadot Blues song. That song led to me sticking stickers on my face or dolls for quite a while haha. Thanks again for so many happy childhood memories. :)

Oh my gosh. When I was seven years old my grandma took me to the mall to go “birthday shopping” where I got to pick out stuff with my birthday money. We went to FYE and I bought this exact same video. I thought it was special because it was Timmy’s birthday and also my birthday. I remember this being advertised in a lot of the cartoons I'd watch on VHS. I guess they were trying to build up a dramatic situation in that story, when realistically they could have gone about the surprise birthday party without resorting to neglectful tactics. For instance, having one or two friends hang out with Timmy for the day, tricking him into believing that they were going to have a small celebration of his birthday by simply hanging out. It would have given a more positive experience, and then elevated that afterwards with the real party. 😊

One of my earliest memories: Early or mid 80s MTV(?) game show where everyone sat in a big comfy easy chair, the losers were pulled chair n’ all off set, then spat back out, as a skeleton sitting on the chair. I was convinced that the people were actually being killed, and not only that, but that any adults that I asked about it, would lie to me, or failing that, they would be mistaken and say it was a special effect or something, and that the people weren’t being killed. I imagined that they were pulling innocent people off the street, or that people wanted to win so bad they were willing to risk a 2/3 chance of death 😬

Children just need a reminder that people do still love them, even if it may not seem that way. It's a commonly used trope because, obviously, children aren't watching every single show out there. It's just safer to have a kind and simple message in many kids' shows, rather than only one message in one show that would be easy to miss. Hopefully that makes a bit of sense as to why it's a common plot. (Edited a sentence for clarity.)

the part of the intro talking about old cartoons you're not sure ever existed, i really wanted to yell "YES, I've felt EXACTLY like that!!!" i have so many cartoons and video games i vaguely remember in my head, but when i try to ask the people i grew up with they tell me it either never existed or i misremembered it and it makes me feel like i'm legit going insane. like, i'm 99% sure that at one point we owned a kart racing ps3 game that i used to pester my brother every night to play with me, and it had a battle mode where two players had to shoot at each other or do challenges to kick each other off the platform or something, but the closest game i can find is mario kart which doesn't exist on a ps3??? and my brother doesn't remember what game it was either, but he does remember us owning a ps3 (and no nintendo consoles), and he does remember that he used to hate sharing a room with me because i wouldn't let him sleep.
