Headcanon: Captain von Trapp uses guitar as one of his coping mechanisms after the death of his wife, and wrote Edelweiss in her memory. It's why he always seems to be emotionally repressing himself when he sings it, because he doesn't want to think about his dead wife and get upset in front of his children. Also, Liesl is the only one who knows that he wrote it for her mother, which is why she sings along in the 1964 film.

It’s not about his wife. It’s about his country. He is a real patriot. He stopped singing when his wife died but the song is not about her. And he’s emotional the first time because he realised that, with Maria, he’s able to sing again. And the second time because he knows that he can’t stay in the country that is his and that he loves so much anymore. I think he hopes that the country won’t loose his identity because of nazism.

In my opinion I think both versions of the Edelweiss song is really better than this. This song made me cry when I was little but now it doesn't anymore. I'm so happy that Edelweiss is in the NBC version of The Sound Of Music 2014 version and the 1964 version. I think both of The Sound Of Music movies are awesome but RIP Christopher Plummer but I'm so happy that Carrie Underwood, Stephen Moyer, Ariane Reinhart, Ella-watts Gorman, Joe West, and every actor are my favorites ever since the 2014 version and the 1964 version and the characters from both movies are my favorite.

Yes. Christian Borle played Uncle Max. I think it was smart that they packed this version full of really Noteable actors Christian Borle, Stephen Moyer, and Audra MacDonald. Since Carrie Underwood was less experienced as an actress. And Moyer, contrary to popular belief did a great job as Captain Von Trapp.

He did actually sing it, it was recorded but they decided to dub it later. There’s a version of his original voice floating about on KZbin. Bill Lee sang it beautifully but there’s a charm to Plummer’s that fits in with the story that he hasn’t sang in years a little better in my opinion. His was a little more reserved and apprehensive.
