@@EdenMakers I got my orchid 5 yrs ago. My sister said "should you repot?" I said i dont know: "i pretty much ignore it. I give it about a tablespoon of water once a week when i dust; other than that its pretty much ignored. Ive never pruned it or fed it. I just put it in a bright light south facing window and it seems happy. It blooms every year!" Her question made me seek out information bcus i know zero about orchids! I can see ive been pretty darn lucky. Its the easiest, repeat bloomer ive ever had! Its got about 20 areials, that look very healthy. Bright leaves and blooms stay beautiful for 6-7 months. Every January through july? Idk, it bloomed in january and its June so maybe ill make it thru August this year. I havent dropped a petal! The only thing i guess i should check is the fact its in a glass, heavy duty non-draining pot! Go figure it needs holes! Maybe i should leave "well enough" alone. Ild be heart sick if i kill it 😥

Everything you say is so true. 5 years ago a got, once again, an orchid. But the difference this time was that we moved into our new house. I put them in front of my window kitchen and it did great there. Once it was bloomed out I cut it back on the stem and I can honestly say that in less than 3 month I have new growth. I have 3 different orchids now. They bloomed out end of august and my oldest one has 1 new growth, the middle one has 5 and the youngest one has 2. This in less than 3 months. I LOVE orchids

Absolutely! I’m thrilled to have found you and your channel...like I’ve said, it’s been so hard to find the right person to tell me what I’ve been wanting to know, but now I have! Thank you for getting right into it and giving such helpful tips. I absolutely love my orchids, though I’m still relatively new, they have brought me a lot of joy. I’m especially excited with my new little guys I’ve gotten from my local grocery store (when they are 75% off)! Some are in rough shape with sad roots, but I’ve been able to rehabilitate them and now they are looking so good. I’ve always wondered exactly where to cut my stem once the flowers are gone, so thank you for explaining that. Also, for some reason a few of my more mature orchids bloom nearly all year long... is that common, or is it a particular orchid that does that?

I am SO GLAD I KZbin'd how to re-pot before trying anything! I didn't know they don't use soil, and just bought some potting soil and a new pot (with no holes!) I also did not know that the roots sticking up were air roots! I thought the plant was just running out of room. I learned so much just from watching 2 of your videos. I can't believe mine has been alive 3 years! (And I give it ice cubes) I will definitely get the proper things to care for it now! Thank you!

EdenMakers I don't think my plant is very healthy. There's 2 "branches" that are brittle looking and brown. I'd been thinking it needed clipped but didn't know about that sort of thing. Ironically I was given the flower because my Dad passed away, and he is the one I would have gotten advice from! :)

Brilliant video. My nephew bought me an Orchid almost 10 years ago, we dont do anything special to it other than water it, it has bloomed almost continuosly for those 10 years, new stems have appeared and we just cut the old ones as they diw back, we have repotted it twice and is now in a big pot. It lives in the kitchen window, in winter we move it into the big window as the sunlight is less in winter and the other window has a radiator under it and noticed that the orchid did not like it, so move it away in winter. I love my orchid and hope that it will last for a long time. I love your video as you eplain everything so well. xx

And when thier done blooming. I also make a ice cube try mix with the fertiluzer/ food in it. Each week I give my orchids time ice cubes a week. This help with not over watering or under watering. @EdenMakers
@EdenMakers 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aileen, Thanks for watching and sharing your kind words. There are orchids with bulbs which are sympodial - these orchid flowers grow horizontally along a growing medium such as a tree. They produce a number of thick stems that are bulbous in shape. These bulbs are known as rhizomes and they spread out in a horizontal pattern from the original plant.

I Love Orchids ! But for years I could never get them to grow properly until I saw this Video ! I’ve talked to Florists friends Who have them but Nobody explained this easy way to grow them ! Now I’ve had my one for 2 years and Get Gorgeious Flwers ! I have a Dwarf Now for 6 Months and am getting Flowers like Crazy ! The one thing though that Shirley does explain is This ! A Bright room is great but if you live in an apartment or house with A lot of tree shade It isn’t possible ! Solution is Artificial Light not incandescent but halogen Lights My plants love that light like Crazy ! It doesn’t burn the leaves ! Keep about 6” away ! Flowers don’t need the light just the leaves ! Do everything else that Shirley says and you should have no Problem ! Thanks Shirley !

My orchids just do all this on their own. I don’t fuss with them at all. That’s why I buy the cheap orchids that are 2-5$ at the stores now haha. I get a surprise of colors each year. But this video is neat. I was wondering if there was a way to make them bloom MORE. But guess I’ve done this all by mistake already. Awesome. Thanks for posting this. I’m a flower n plant nerd. Grew up in Florida and remember my dad collecting Orchids in the Keys as a kid for my mom. Don’t see those ones here where I live now just these more common ones like you and I have. But they really are awesome plants. Had no idea they lived that long!

Actually the first orchid I was given I had no idea how to look after. I cut the entire flower spike off right at the base, soaked the planting bark mixture through once a week under a tap... and it rebloomed several times with an entirely new flower spike each time. They are a lot more resilient than people think. But thanks for this great advice.

I bought an orchid on clearance at the grocery store last spring. It wasn’t doing so well but finished blooming and then wilted completely, the flowers died, the stem holding up the flowers shriveled up, but the leaves were still green and looked healthy at the bottom, which surprised me, as I had believed I killed the plant by overwatering. It came in a tiny plastic pot, so I transferred the root system/leaves (what was left of the plant) to a clay pot that I had been using for a succulent that died. I didn’t change the soil and it still had pebbles I had put on the bottom before for the succulent to drain. I added some orchid chips at the top that I had from a terrarium and fake moss. And the plant (knock on wood) hasn’t died since. But it also hasn’t bloomed either. It’s been about 8 months and it’s grown some long roots or stems that stretch all over the place. The leaves look healthy and I’m very amazed I haven’t killed the plant by overwatering or lack of sunlight or issues with heat. I live in Colorado, and my orchid lives in a south facing windowsill in my apartment that doesn’t actually get much light, and I water it whenever I feel like it, which tends to be every couple days, but when I do water it I always water it so much that the water drains into the bottom pot part. I have a lot of fondness for my little orchid plant even if it still hasn’t bloomed since I first got it because even my mother who is an excellent green thumb hasn’t been able to keep orchid she keeps buying from the store alive. I hope my plant can bloom again eventually but even if it doesn’t I enjoy seeing new roots or stems poke out from the bottom slowly and waywardly spread out. But thank you for this video, it gave me a lot of helpful tips and helps me realize that I was actually doing more right than I thought I was, especially because the window it lives in is bright but never gets direct light and the temperature changes quite drastically, and the pebbles in the bottom of the pot that were there for the precious succulent probably are helping it retain humidity. I doubt I’ll try fertilizing it because I’m sure I’d poison it accidentally, but even if it doesn’t bloom, like I said, I am very pleased with my little robust orchid plant.

Terrific video! Orchids are such an easy plant to take care of and I'm glad to see so many people interested. When I lived in San Diego, I used to actually plant them in the shade of my yard and it looked like an exotic rain forest because of it, especially when they started cross pollinating. :)

Anyway, it's been ages and it hasn't put out a new flower spike. I've been fertilizing it weakly weekly and I'm wondering if there's another way to get it to put out new flower spikes. @EdenMakers
@EdenMakers 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, thanks for watching! You should definitely not remove the roots. There's a good chance you'll harm the plant or introduce a dangerous virus. Trim an orchid root or stem only if it's dry and you're certain it's dead, but work carefully to avoid cutting too deep and harming the plant.

I got my orchid 5 yrs ago.
