Building a song from scratch on Yamaha MODX (MiDI, Audio? FX

In this video I attempt to do the same thing as I did on the previous video for the Korg Nautilus and Roland Fantom. I was not entirely successful as the MODX can be confusing but is a great keyboard for Live Performance. Recording a song is another story as you will see if you watch the video. MOdX is not very intuitive when it comes to the sequencer. But errors and all I hope this is helpful to someone.

I really like this series "building a song from scratch". It told me (almost) everything I wanted to know about these workstations. It would be great if you could do such a video about the Kurzweil K2700 as well! :-)

@@edgaba It seems to be a very interesting workstation. Sure, the display might have been good in the year 2002, but I have such a display on my Yamaha PSR-SX600 and can work fine with it. But it is always inspiring to enter a new world of sounds and workflows. The last Kurzweil I had briefly was a PC3LE6, more than 10y ago. The keybed wasn't for me, though. Very heavy for a synth action. K2700 looks very interesting to me 🙂

I'm going to do a video on setting up the modx with FL Studio. So many people have a hard time getting any sound from the modx into FL Studio. I prefer to send the audio direct into FL Studio and record it but this way was way above me. Thanks for doing the video my friend.

Thank you for reminding me! I recently started learning Cubase because it came with the MODX, but I really miss Fruity Loops...it's just so damn expensive now (I had a bootlegged version in the early 2000's, before it changed to FL Studio).

The MODX is not very intuitive at all!😉 It's a mess, I would say. But the sequencer is the easiest feature to my opinion. Many menues to deal with; but mighty and easy. I don't know other manufacturers. Your problem with "saving the work" ... is not a special problem with the sequencer. It is a general problem! I use to save, save, save and save every single step. Sometimes (when extensive performance) I even use a copy of the performance to experiment without risk. The main problem with the sequencer is, that it doesn't function well. At least not at normal speed. Then it has very serious problems with latencies. Also with quantize. Seems not to be a problem here. But e.g. crafting own drumsets, what I usually do, cause enormous latency-problems. A quick solution can be to record some repetitions of the pattern in MIDI-mode, and then cut out a proper piece, where it functions. Also enerving is the "New Pattern". With my kind of workflow - patterns for each sound - some attention is required to choose the according pattern, because it allways jumps to a new pattern. At the end of my personal workflow all my patterns are converted to arps and therefore no longer of need. By the way I wouldn't do it your way. My first start is to collect all needed instruments and adjust them. Then comes the fine-work, sequences, arps...

Such an informative video, thanks! After three years of being frustrated with the complexity and non-intuitiveness of the MODX I decided to learn Cubase. Now that's the only thing I record on. I'm not bashing the MODX, it's an incredible synth and the sounds are world class, but the sequencer functions are certainly not conducive as a standalone workstation...though it "can" be done with a bunch of finesse and headaches.

I feel with you! Only difference: I never gave up. Infact I didn't buy it only to connect it to software. To my understanding is is a pretty strange mindset to buy a machine of this capacity for quiet some dollars/euros and then switch to a DAW. By the way I have the same experiences with Cubase. I am lucky if I get my MODX connected to it. For me the most disadvantage of this sequencer is that you don't see, what you are doing. And those videos only show the basics of the basics of the basics. So they are still far away from daily work and significant problems one faces when arranging a real song. One could make a dozen of videos. And yes, it needs a lot of working with it to get used to it/the menues. At the end the biggest advantage of the MODX is its flexibility. At least depending on your playstyle. Then the work with this sequencer is indispensable. All problems I uncovered can be solved... with finesse and headaches ;) But once you solved it, you won't need a DAW; except for some special features.

@@ChordFreak Very understandable! I haven't given up on the MODX sequencer, cause I eventually want to use it for some live performances (never played live other than a few small piano gigs when I was younger). One of my biggest issues is not getting the quantization correct and needing to change individual note placement in post editing (as opposed to just recording it again and again). That's much easier to do with a few clicks in Cubase. I haven't figured out how to do that on the MODX yet.

The combination of Cubasis (iOS) and MODX is very powerful. Since the MODX has a good (class compliant) audio/MIDI interface, you can send audio/MIDI data to and from the DAW without any perceptible latency. Best of both worlds, using MODX sounds combined with iOS instruments such as Pianoteq, the sequencing and even mastering power of a DAW....and no mouse-clicking required.

That Kbd Ctrl system for sequencing tracks looks hyper annoying - why on earth didn't they just have a simple option to select a single track? What is more annoying tho is that stupid ass beep sound. it's just a awful sound for a workstation rich enviroment.. I will turn that and the horrible animations OFF for eternity when I get my modx+ very soon.

If you make a video, you could have at least wiped the screen clear so we all don't have to constantly look at the ugly dirt on it.
