My cat Edgar has seizures. I was able to capture this one (poorly) with my iPad.

I wanted to thank everyone again for their supportive commentary and I also wanted to speak about some of the advice posted here. I understand there are conflicting recommendations regarding whether to hold a seizing animal or not. Now, I don't know what might be right for other animals, I just know what I needed to do to protect Edgar's safety. So for him, when he had seizures he would run uncontrollably, and seemingly with limited vision. That resulted in some major injuries. For example, one time he started seizing on my bed (like in this video) but unfortunately fell off! In the process, his claw remained stuck on the blanket, and ended up getting ripped out entirely. It was awful! I won't go into details about other injuries, but suffice it to say that his vet and I agreed that loose containment was the best way to prevent anything worse happening. My holding him also seemed to serve a calming function for him too. So, again, whatever is right for you and your animal; all I can comment on is my personal experience with a very sick but very well-loved kitty. I hope this video continues to help de-mystify and normalize what can be an extremely frightening medical event for loving pet parents and their furbabys. Best of luck to you all!!

I had a cat named Justin who had seizures. Justin had been locked inside a meth house when the creeps moved out. They locked him in the only bedroom that they didn't take the door from. It was May, over 90°, & the electric & water had been shut off for months before they left. After the house was sold for nonpayment of taxes, there was 4 days with no one there. Then a handiman went in. He came racing out screaming, "BIG RAT!! BIG RAT!!" I was trying to calm him down when I saw something crawling in the middle of the room! Justin was approximately 11-12 years old, full grown, adult male. He was neutered, had dirt & plants growing in both ears! I picked him up as he had collapsed. Weight at vet was 1.5 pounds!! Every rib & bone showed. I fed him a teaspoon at a time. Every 15 minutes. If you feed a starved cat or dog with a ton of food, they wolf & then vomit. The vet said he had to weigh 5 lbs to knock him out to deep clean his ears. I couldn't get his attention. So on the 5 pound day they put him under to clean his ears. He had no ear drums!! The vet said they had started to form but quit forming. Justin was deaf!! He also had seizures, some a lot worse than this. When a seizure started, my other cats would run to me and get me to follow. I would speak to him, even without him hearing, he could feel the vibration. Justin passed away a year ago. He had high meth levels during that first blood test--5 days after the jerks left! So I think that shortened his life.

Omg the perfect cat mama, I’m sorry for you loss, but at least Edgar had a great mama(you) I love how you calmed him/her down with your words, adorable little kitty❤️

At least he wasn't bumping into hard objects. He could get a concusion from bumping into stuff while seizing. Good catch with the choking too.

Poor kitty! He's in a better place now 😀 here's some advice though, don't hold it down because you'll probably get bitten/scratched. The best thing to do when an animal is having a seizure is just let it be until it's over

or take him to a vet if it lasts more than 15 min

That is from all of the Potassium in the food we buy them. My cat did this, not as intense, and it was my final decision to let him go. The kidney can no longer filter the blood so it builds up toxic in their blood, not much you could do, the nephrons were toast like my kitty. We learn though, and they are always in our hearts and minds. Think of the good kitty brought you!!!!

Hey there, my cat keeps having seizures every once in a while since he was like 5 months old. Now he is 9 yo. Different vets had different approaches to the problem. One said he had FIV, the other said he was diabetic, the other said it is idiopathic.. The time of the episodes differ wildly. They are sometimes days apart, sometimes months. They seem to be totally random, with no apparent reason. I tried but couldn't figure out a correlation between the way i feed him or anything. Once he has an attack, he stays unresponsive for a minute or so, with very dilated pupils. After that he regains his consciousness. Anyway, sometimes lighting a match and letting him smell the fumes (upon vets advise) helps him to get better quick . When he is having a seizure, i try to take him on to a surface where he can't get his nails caught while wildly and randomly moving his paws. I hold him just barely so that he doesn't hit his head somewhere and hurt himself, without restraining his movement so that he can discharge the electrical load in his brain. I hope these would help you and Edgar.

I wonder why there is no cats or dogs with seizures in CIS and almost no people with epilepsy in Kazakhstan?

Maybe less toxins are used there . Do they use roundup (glyphosates) on their crops ? Does everyone have wifi there ? Does everyone vaccinate their pets there with vaccines that contain aluminum and mercury ? There could possibly be a link .

Oh No, Trishbalbert, so sorry to read down below that Edgar has passed on, I was going to suggest you looking into and giving him CBD (Cannabidiol) oil to help combat and reduce his seizures. CBD oil is proving to be extremely effective at reducing seizures in animals and people and the CBD oil derived from Hemp is 100% THC free and legal in ALL 50 States.

restraining the cat while it's having a seizure is SO wrong. Keep your hands off the cat.
@ecetemuroglu93507 жыл бұрын
But they can really hurt themselves otherwise. I don't think you treat cat seizures the same way as in humans or dogs.

Say that when your cat runs into a wall because it can't see and breaks its jaw.
@kilithelion85066 жыл бұрын
While it is best to not hold it down. There's a point where they might have to since it's possible the cat will fall off something or run into something.

Yosemite Sam won’t be saying that when your cat is repetitively jumping head first into walls and furniture
@dcavfactory4 жыл бұрын
Totally disagree. I held my girl tightly as she found herself on my cellar step and she either would have fallen down each step or behind the step (which was opened_ and fell 10 feet to concrete. She was fine after that and I never would have ever let her bang her head or fall and lose her life. Depends on if you have a 'rubber room' or actual circumstances. I understand my cat has the occasional seizure and has about a 15 hour range where she isnt herself afterward, but 90% of the time she is ok. If I find her having one i do everything in my power to keep her safe from herself.That advice seems pretty harsh.
