We changed the title of this tutorial to Intermediate Techniques as many of you found this tutorial too fast to follow. We have many other beginner tutorials on the channel so hopefully you'll find one that suits your skill level. Thanks for Watching!

I don't see why everyone's so salty in the comments lol ? I've only had Maya for two days and this was super helpful for me, everything was explained in an easily understandable way, but not dragged out to a point it was tiring/overwhelming. -Unlike so many others OTL- But even if there are other way of doing it, it never hurts to learn alternatives !

For an alternative way with similar results: just start from a cube instead of a plane; let's say that it's positioned similarly enough to where you polyplane is and then bevel the X aligned edge closest to the origin, with three segments (or more, but I'm just mimicking this video. In the channel box you then only have to change two other settings from the defaults ones: Autofit to OFF, and then you can set Roundness to its NEGATIVE opposite. Delete the usual (and annoying) extra-edges left from the pre-2016 version of Maya bevel, and you get the same perfectly round result. No bollean operation, no cylinders hurt. And pretty fast. Just another way to start this, at least. Then follow the rest of this video ;)

Hey! what you said there was good but, there's a easier way. You can just extrude the outer edges of cylinder trice, and we can scale last set of vertices to get a proper straight cut.

Hi I'm new to maya but not modelling, and I actually liked the tutorial.. thanks :) I think for me all I could add is how to bake the object at the end as learning Maya for Unreal engine import so having the deformers attached is no good so off to find how to bake it :)

Cool tut. Question - why not use a Boolean to cut out the edge instead of tracing it and cutting it manually? Otherwise, great stuff - I didn't realize half of those options were hidden in those right-click menus. :-)

booleans can be pretty messy, and generally create more problems than not. I tried it with booleans and while it was pretty fast to get to the arch shape, it creates a messy outliner, with your objects in shape groups and such. i think for simple objects like this it works ok, you just have a bit more tidying up to do.

I can say that information is explained some way to fast, but It does help to get the idea of how to do something right way, I didn't know about bend tool so thanks for the idea to go forward. I would this tutorial should be called like more technic or way to think when the model, because its to fast to repeat the tutotial, but it does says the idea of how you should act, and how to model faster.

Ok, so as a person completely new to Maya but also as a person who picks up on programs quickly, i found your tutorial infuriating. Your explanation of the steps you took miss out on crucial details. I was going to knock this out before i had to go to work, but ended up spending 2 hours on it and i didn't even get halfway through because i had to use 20 other tutorials to explain the steps you glossed over! Some areas i got hung up on: Creating shapes: You fail to mention that you simply clicked where you wanted the shape. The in-program tool tips tell you to click and drag which creates a conflict in the process for people unfamiliar with Maya Views: I had to go through endless tutorials to learn all the shortcuts on how to change views with menus. one moment you're in perspective the next you're in front and you completely lost me Snapping: Snapping should have been gone over much earlier in the video. I ended up looking it up way before you explained it, because you used it for moving objects, you used it for rotating the cylinder (which is shift right click then LEFT - not right) ... etc etc Finally, the last thing i got to before I just had to get off, write this and go to work - the bevel tool. You completely skipped how to expand the bevel or whatever. Also it doesn't help us if you tell us what your custom hotkeys are. ALSO ALSO, it's hard to tell whether you're saying B C V D E.......? Try using ' b like boy ' in the future - and avoid custom hotkeys as a general rule. Basically, when a person creates the bevel using the right click menu, it doesn't automatically take you to the point where you can adjust that. YOu have to actually open the menu on the right, click bevel and then you can adjust. This gave me a large amount of grief, as honestly there's no decent tutorials that explain bevelling out there. Sorry if i'm a bit harsh, i've gotten quite frustrated trying to follow your "beginner" tutorial, and i know, maybe i'm not the level of beginner you intended it for, but hopefully my issues help you create a better tutorial in the future. PS - i will be completing this after work. I don't give up that easily!!

I don't find that to be fair, TheDevilMyself. This was a clear tutorial from my perspective. Part of learning is having to reference multiple tutorials, so you did the normal thing by getting stuck then referencing the web for help. Welcome to the professional world where we all do that, even at advanced levels :) Along with what Edge suggested, for beginners, I would recommend #1 that you never expect to knock anything out real quick in Maya. It's a complicated tool. #2, please consider Lynda.com. Most KZbin tutorials are best as references, inspiration and promos for paid training courses. Lynda is best for learning from one instructor for at least 4 hours in an academic style format. The things you create may not be as cool as what's on KZbin, but you'll learn the basics. Edge, Escape Studios and David Horol teach similarly, using shortcuts, custom keys and marking menus which is the best way to learn but understandably may be overwhelming for a beginner. However, they do clearly let you know what they're doing. I was easily able to follow Edge's tutorial, but I have used Lynda, Digital Tutors, went to NYU and resource tuts from Escape Studios, Simply Maya, Gnomon, Lester Banks, etc. Reference them all until you find a teaching style that suits you. Come back to this tutorial and you'll find it really easy. Best to you and I'm glad you're not giving up. And Edge was kind enough to share this with us, free, so let's please be nice and thank him ;)

Do be fair, I didn't mention the hood things about the tutorial. Those were: the pacing, the audio (aside from the E BCD thing) and all instructions that were given were given well. 2.5 hours is nowhere near quick. The big areas for improvement were clear, I feel. I'd recommend that the author record the video, then record the audio over it and literally make a rough script so things go well. I'm super grateful to everyone who bothers to make tutorials. For real. And I was pretty harsh I'm sure, but all my points were valid.

TheDevilMyself We create and share tutorials that we feel are high quality and easy to follow. We always look for feedback from our audience to make sure that when we create tutorials (instead of sharing from an other author) they are easy to follow and very clear, so we appreciate your comment. The author of this content (FlippedNormals.com) in our opinion has supplied us with a lot of high quality videos that we feel helped many people. Maybe if we rename the content so it's not "Beginners" then there wouldn't be any misunderstanding, however this tutorial is covering content that we feel are at a beginner level. I'm sure if you just opened maya and you never used it before it would be hard to follow as it's aimed at people who already know basic object creation / navigation / moving objects around in the scene. We have many maya tutorials on our channel, so if you feel that this is too advanced, I would recommend maybe checking out the some of the other beginner series that more are suitable for your level before returning to this one. Learning Maya or any 3D software is a challenge in itself, and we are trying our best to make it easier for everyone to learn, so sorry if this caused any inconvenience. Good luck with learning! -Laz

Edge-CGI 3D Tutorials and more! For sure - it's a fine line. I would agree that the content is at a beginner level. Most of the things that tripped me up were also covered later in the tutorial, but were absent from the parts where they were first needed. I will definitely check out the author's other tutorials as I do feel he did a good job overall, however I feel the beginner tag is thrown around a bit haphazardly here on the ole tube. Links to 'introductory' videos would be appreciated where they are relevant. Regardless, thank you author and edge for bringing quality free tutorial content to the masses!

This is incorrect, to snap a new pivot point in the primitive you need more than a simple Hold D command. You have to hold D+V at the same time to actually snap a new pivot.

I am sorry but this is a very lengthy and almost inaccurate way of handling a perfect curves, even for Intermediates. You shouldn't even need to manually insert vertices by hand. I use a boolean for cases like these. > Just make box for a wall in front view, snap it to grid. > Make a Cylinder with 12 sides same way, snap to grid. > Delete lower half of the perfect cylinder, then boolean with difference (The cylinder should be crossing on both sides of box) > Then delete the faces created on the box that has N-gons (5-sided geometry) > Do manual bridging between edges of the box and the resulting cylindrical perfect curve. > insert loops at corners to make it crisp when smoothed. It takes 2 minutes.

is there no easier way to do this. I started on modo because of cost, and its way easier to do, you just designate how wide the arch will be and then it will create graduated set of edges to create the arch automatically.
