Great video. You are my #1 go to source for knife reviews and sharpening tips. My order from CKTG arrived yesterday with the diamond stone and Shapton glass 4000 you recommended. Thank you for the many hours of interesting and enjoyable videos that you've put out, and congratulations on your recent collaboration with Bark River Knives. Well deserved, in my opinion.

i haven't been using the edgepro as long as you have,but last year i replaced the pivot rod with a ball joint and now the stone arm is free to follow the knife bevel's 100% now, with 0% movement or slope,didn't edge pro offer a upgrade kit like this at one time !thank you.

Somehow I missed this video when you put it out, I'm so glad I discovered it. I'm definitely going to get both the small knife attachment and the glass stone, those are the two main problems I have with my EPA as well. Thanks!

Excellent video brother; after viewing it I feel much better about sending you my knives and money... All the required diligence and logistics of running that thing, never mind all the "pooched" blades whilst getting on the learning curve, makes justifying firing knives your way, well, justified!! Keep the great vids and fabulous edges coming. God bless Rob.....

Awesome tips. I just got mine yesterday & I have a diamond plate & 4000 grit shapton glass stone on the way. Did 1 knife with the edge pro 140 grit stone & it’s already out of flat. Didn’t notice before I moved onto a second knife and gave it a solid recurve on accident. Luckily it was just a 90c knife I grabbed from a thrift store to practice!

On the bar that holds the stone. They're needs to be maybe a brass insert were it goes through the plastic. As you make your stokes. Mine has gotten a little lose. Or I've seen ones with a serferical bering. Just seems to me that the less movement the better the job it can do. And I really wish that they would mount the spyderco ceramic stones on to the blanks. I feel there prally the best stones you can get. And if I could use them on my edge pro. You would see some really nice edges. I use the spyderco stones to touch up my knifes and am really impressed with what I can accomplish free hand after the edge is straight.

The edge pro is simple but works great... If anyone wants to put a mirror finish on their finished knifes I suggest buying a 1x30 belt grinder jewels paste a a leather 1x30 belt... amazing results in seconds

Just bought one of these and it seems pretty intimidating, think I'm gonna practice on some old kitchen knives first, lol. Good vid btw.

You don't have to do kitchen knives. Just get a box of butter knives from your local thrift store and do like wranglerstar did. Sharpen those to shaving sharp.

@@bwillan Lol, tbh I ended up just practicing on some of my cheaper Kershaws. Rolled the tip on both of my Cryos until I realized I needed to remove a fair bit of metal from the factory edge to get a nice even bevel from the heel to the tip. It's got a bit of learning curve but the EP really does a nice job.

Edge pro makes a simple device (it's not cheap) that allows you to clamp the edge pro to your work table it works great. The suction cups never worked for me either

my knob for the attachment is plastic. That is strange, when I take off my stock blade table, mine did not come with a washer below between the base screw and the blade table... neither did my professional. I originally bought exterior painters tape... never had a problem! I do not have an issue with polishing tapes... however I notice you have the metal tape blanks... I use the glass ones! I cannot agree with you on the 4k SG being finer than the 3k EP tape... can't agree with you AT ALL. I however CAN agree with you that the lower grit shaptons aren't as good as the lower grit EP stones. I hear EP has released a new polishing stone set of 2, and also the new metal blanks are now flatter than the glass!

I will say that I got the Shapton set Edge Pro Apex and those stones are amazing (500, 1,000, 4,000 grit stones). It sounds like the diamond plate would be a good one to round things out?
@anthonywaldrep59828 жыл бұрын
+James Smith Absolutely! I would add the Shapton Glass 320 after the 120 grit diamond plate. The Shapton Glass 500 can remove the scratches from the 120, but the 320 will save a lot of wear on the 500. The 500, 1k, 4k progression leaves a very nice toothy edge!
@thechemtrailkid6 жыл бұрын
How have the 140 diamond stones been holding up? Also Boride, who I believe is the manufacturer of the EP stones, makes a 1200 grit stone which most people say is about a 4k shapton glass.

I use a really fine 800 grit dimond stone. To flatten them.

I've tried a few machines and I just can't get them the same angle on both side ! And they don't have enough clearance for my the angle . I think my natural angle when hand sharpening is a little lower than most ( 17° maybe ). I use the machine stones but not the machine mostly 600 and 1000 then strop with .5 microns or 1 micron for re-sharpen If I have to re-profile I use 200 240 400 . I don't polish is isn't for show I use knives ! But they do get a little shiny ! Thanks for the class ! Maybe some day I'll learn to use a machine !

if you're looking for cheap SiC stones, I buy mine from moldmaster. they dont come mounted but the price is very cheap and they have quite a few varieties to choose from and they come in a few thicknesses as well. Have you tried using magnets on your edge pro Rob? I installed some under the edge of my table and im loving it, I almkst don't have to hold the knive, it just stays in place. I would highly recommend to try magnets out sometime, they're the best thing I ever did to my edge pro. I have been wanting to get some shapton glass as well and seeing you recommend them is jyst another push I need. Although lately I've been loving doinf freehand sharoening on my new set of shapton pros, its so relaxing.

Home Depot sells little packs of neodymium magnets in the bulk nuts and bolts aisle, or you can rip apart a dead computer hard drive for a couple very strong rare earth magnets from the read/write aperature. There's a video tutorial here on the tube.

Hey Rob, so I've got something that is confusing the heck out of me and I'm hoping you'd be able to help. I'm using the edge pro, with the leather strop and some different diamond lapping paste. I start with 3 micron and work my way down to .5 . I start to get an amazing looking polish once I get to the .5 micron paste. After several passes I look at the bevel and it's looking great, so I continue. At this point, maybe another 20 passes or so each side, I look at my edge and my perfect polish is gone. I start to see a light scratch pattern when I'm holding the blade at a certain angle, any idea what this could be caused by? Hope to hear from you soon, keep up the good work!

I really like your sharpening videos :-) I've seen some people use magnets under their table to hold the knife i place a little bit more, have you tried that? Also, I saw a sharpening device made in Sweden called the Edgepal, kind of looks like an Edge pro. It has two different arms that holds the stone you sharpen with. One is straight like on the Edge pro, but the other one is slightly bent, and you can make convex edges with it. Don't know if an arm like that is available on the Edgepro, but it would be fun to make a prototype to see how it works.

Love the Shapton stones 4K, 8K, 16K want to grab a 30K for the Edge Pro. I use the full size Shapton Glass Stones to do my straight razors. Have you used any of the chosera stones, specifically there 5,000 grit or there 10,000 grit . I was wondering if those stones would give you the option of not having to use a strop
@anthonywaldrep59828 жыл бұрын
Colorado to Cali For me, there was no need to strop after the 10k chosera. It gives a beautiful mirror polish following a close grit progression.

Do you consider getting a Tormek sharpening machine?
@drivingmuffin9 жыл бұрын
+Stefan Wolf I actually use a Tormek T4, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're only going to sharpen knives. Although it's nice and fast for reprofiling, there are better tools to you could use. It also puts a slight hollow grind on everything you sharpen.
@bwillan6 жыл бұрын
I challenge you to actually measure the amount of hollow grind on the edge of a knife sharpened with either a 8" or 10" Tormek sharpening wheel. With the tiny bevel area that we actually sharpen on a knife that for all practical purposes either tormek wheel diameter is flat at the contact point with the knife edge.

How would you go about cleaning that Shapton glass stone?? Just orderd mine :)
@joshvaldez92349 жыл бұрын
I have the same stones and I use this stuff called bar keepers maid. It's like commet. Really abrasive powder. But if you mix a little bit with water and skrub them with a tooth brush. They're like new when your done. And keep them flat. Cause I'f you don't. You will have a really hard time when you get to the higher grits.
@wrongmower9 жыл бұрын
+Josh Valdez thanks Josh, what do you personally use to flatten the stone ?
@anthonywaldrep59828 жыл бұрын
+04dakota The silicone carbide that Ben sells will eventually dish the glass leveling plate which will also dish your stones. I highly recommend a DMT XXC. Flatten your stones with it under running water.
@cwrowe9 жыл бұрын
Do you find it easier to sharpen a cheap steel or higher end? I know question might seem stupid but I know higher end steel will hold edge longer ect but is it easier to sharpen or about the same?
@TheApostleP9 жыл бұрын
+cwrowe Very good question! The easy answer is that cheaper, softer steels are easier to sharpen. But there are cheap steels that just will not take an edge, no matter what you do. Examples of this would be Pakistani steels that are full of inclusions, contamination and voids. Higher end steels of higher hardness and toughness, like S30V and Elmax, are indeed harder to sharpen than less expensive, softer steels like AUS8 and VG-10. There is a definite trade-off between ease of sharpening and edge retention in general.

Hi, any update on the durability of the Shapton Stone?
@TheApostleP8 жыл бұрын
Alden Navarrete They last a long time -- very little cupping or digging. Just don't drop them. They crack like glass, and once you have a crack the stone will wear fast at the crack, making it useless. It will destroy your apex at that point. You have to be very careful with them.

Help me wrap my mind around something...When you are sharpening the body of the blade, the distance from the base of the edge pro to the edge of the knife is a certain distance. The sharpening angle is established at that distance. If you do not move the tip end out to the same distance, is the angle not slightly changed for the tip being closer to the pivot point? The distance is shorter so the angle would be steeper?
@Mstymntntop5 жыл бұрын
Based on my geometry classes from high school, using SOH CAH TOA and the measurements of the machine, the angle changes. if the tip of the knife is just a quarter of an inch closer to the pivot point (by not moving the blade out), the angle changes by ~0.66 degrees.
