Aww thanks for the review! Just saw this pop up on my subscriptions and recognised my face haha! This recipe was for sure from my no oil days when I thought oil was the devil 😅 Highly recommend cooking it with oil instead as I do this now whenever I make it. You’re right it carries the flavour and spices better. I also love to cook it with coconut milk instead of tomato (which I also have a recipe for). Good reminder to actually change my recipe on my website to have oil for the start of the recipe! 🥰

I made the Rainbow Plant Life recipe a few days ago with cashew cream instead of coconut milk since I don’t cook with oil. It was really delicious. If you don’ t cook with oil you can add ground cashews to add healthy fat to give that extra richness too. Thanks for doing the taste test.

I think this might not be the right comparison. Two of the recipes are dals and the other is a curry. Dals, if sticking to the traditional recipe (esp red lentil dals) are soupy and not creamy. They don’t have coconut milk or nut butter or a thick creamy element. So the 2 dal recipes are supposed to be how they turned out and not creamy. The oil will definitely help the flavor come through more. The third is a curry so a better comparison would be other curry recipes

I’ve made the Rainbow Plant recipe and really liked it. More recently, I made the recipe from Yeung Man Cooking and liked it just a bit better. It was thicker and used water instead of broth. He instructs us to grind our spices from whole seed and I think that bumped up the flavor. This is probably the recipe I’ll go back to in the future.

I often cook red lentil dals too but haven't had a chance to film it yet. I also have a video on red lentil flatbread planned. The peanut butter addition is interesting. Tbh Indian food in India doesn't have anything we would call "curry powder"...their basic spices are cumin, mustard seeds, turmeric, red chili powder, and coriander powder. They do use spice blends for certain things (like chickpea curry) and you can get those at Indian food stores or online...they are called masala spice blends. I do personally really like the McCormick curry powder if you enjoy that flavor!

To be fair and accurate in your reviews, I really think that it's important that you follow someone's recipe exactly, especially in these types of videos. The second time you make a recipe, then it's okay to make your substitutions. It's difficult to accurately judge a recipe if you don't follow it exactly the way it was designed. Seemingly insignificant, little changes can completely alter the flavor of a dish. Just a helpful tip. No hate here. I enjoy your videos. ❤
