Always amazed that this album wasn’t a huge hit. One of my favorites

From someone on his last night of teenagehood, I feel that this masterpiece well represents one of the defining emotions of teenagehood. Namely, the frustration of all the pressure teenagers undergo, usually (in my experience) without getting what we really want. Or even knowing what we want - there seem to be so many disappointments in pursuing something that seems worthwhile, then turns out to be pointless. There's frustration in the lyrics, and juxtaposed excitement in the guitar and harmony, in a stress-release cycle with the soothing rhythms of Edie's vocals, which hint at the promise of passion fulfilled. I can't get over how well that mash-up of frustration and disappointment glides right into reassuring contentment with the craziness of life (again, the vocals and also the comfort of a routine in the drums). And then there's the seasoning of delirium in the backing guitar in the middle of the song (listen with headphones), which speaks to me as the unsung struggle of young people trying to make it in school and work having to put so much effort in just to feel like a person of value - again, the perennial frustration. The song is simultaneously hopeful and expressive of the pent-up frustration; for that I am grateful.

I think the word I was looking for was 'forlorn'... being frustrated and forlorn was the undercurrent of my teenagehood. I say 'was' because it's now past midnight so I'm no longer a teenager, finally. "Volcano" was my catharsis then and continues to be now.

Please tell me you are planning a career as a musician or a writer. You've got the chops for it. Your commentary about this song is breathtaking. Please understand that all of life is pointless- that's the beauty of it. It's a blank slate to do with whatever you want.

@@jenniferlee4506 Thank you - your feedback is giving me a huge confidence boost before I head back to university tomorrow! Sorry to disappoint, but I'm studying environmental science. I believe I can do something meaningful to help out the world with that kind of background. BUT I am a stickler for writing. Every essay, email, KZbin comment is like an iterative puzzle that I need to solve. Totally perfectionistic, but immeasurably satisfying when I finish the process. I've met computer programmers who feel the same way about their code, pianists about their compositions, photographers, etc. Even if life is pointless, people find their niches.

@@5theditionbeatboxing119 Not disappointed at all! I'm a tree-hugger, too! I went to school to be a park ranger. The environment NEEDS passionate and eloquent people like you! I hope you have a wonderful time at university. 💖
