Wow! Thanks for uploading. I play aerofly flight simulator (not very well) and I'm constantly landing at Edinburgh. Obviously I'm biased, its where I live, but it's a great place to land. Great views and I love that fairly sharp turn to the left over the Firth of Forth, the city comes into view to the left. The Bridges Arthur's Seat in the background with the castle looking over the city. Wow! I can only imagine what it's like to fly an aeroplane. Its one thing doing it on a sim but to actually do it for real and as your job. *Wow!* My utmost respect to the two Pilots here and to the tower team. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. 🙏

The arrow shaped housing estate is part of Crammond bordered by Gamekeepers Road on the left, Whitehouse Road on the right and Crammond Road North at the bottom. The roads and houses between them predate Runway 06/24 which wasn't completed until 1977 when it replaced the original much shorter 12/30 runway.

Hi Stefan, I very much appreciated seeing an approach to Edinburgh, my home town. Thank you. When I was a child in the 70s, I had one of those little radios that could listen to ATC. Back then, Approach, Tower and Ground were still 121.2, 118.7 and 121.75 (although they seem to have added some extra digits now). Not nearly so much traffic to EDI back then, not much more than BA and BCAL from Heathrow and Gatwick (Trident 3 and 1-11). But I still remember the opening speech from Approach: "Speedbird 4732, good afternoon, you're identified on handover from Scottish [128.5]. It's radar vectors to ILS or visual 25 [as it was then]. Continue descent to 5,000 on QNH and make your heading 010." Only time I've ever been on the flightdeck of an airliner landing was at EDI, a BA 757 in 1986. I remember the captain remarking that driving them around on the ground was much more complicated than flying them! Now I live in Portugal so would very much like to see Lisbon if Eurowings go there. Thanks again and keep producing these excellent videos.

Another master piece, I lived near TLA vor for the first 25 years of my life, a beautiful area, I mountain bike up Broadlaw to visit it. Flown into EGPH probably 50 times in my life and another 50 in X-Plane. The taxi way you used has priority as there isn’t much space for multiple aircraft to wait there. Always interesting that the A320 can easily make that taxiway but 737 often need full length, higher vref, worse brakes! I like the airport but the ground handling in general is one of the slowest I’ve experienced. Often sit 30 mins on the ramp waiting for enough staff to get a gate ready. Thanks again for the video!

Aye, ground handling isn't great and worse since 2020.

Thanks for watching and for sharing your detailed feedback and thoughts. That sounds right to me: The Boeing 737 is faster during the approach and needs as the result more runway as an Airbus A320. It looks to me that the required runway for a B737 is more equal to the required runway for an Airbus A321, which approaches with a higher speed due to the higher weight.
@Elnino2910
@Elnino2910 Жыл бұрын
I was based in EDI for 2 years Iain on the 73, in my experience despite having a faster approach speeds than the airbus, all the 737 operators there would make Bravo intersection well over 90% at the time with flaps 30 quite easily, this would obviously involve more braking action than the airbus, but not so much on the max with its very effective carbon brakes. Flaps 40 would be used generally when within +/- 4 tons of MLW and keen on making Bravo. Nice story about the TLA VOR, I’ve only admired that area from above but would love to discover some nice walks down that way!

@@Elnino2910 Great info, I’m flying the 73 in XP11 all the time, great aircraft. Good info on the taxiway, flights I’ve been on have missed that taxi way quite often, but I guess some gusty winds can result in a wee bit of a late touchdown, also experience some really heavy manual braking trying to make it! Best thing about living there as a teenager in the 90s was the low flying jets, daily Tornadoes, Jaguars, Harriers, F111s….sadly a very rare site now!

Excellent video, as always. Q - what prompts the captain to call "Gear down"? I ask, because it is too easy to forget to lower the undercarriage. As a passenger in a Cessna twin, we tried to land at LGW gear-up many years ago. Only the noise of the props scraping the runway alerted us to the urgent need for a go-round.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos 9 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for supporting the channel as a member and your good feedback! The standard operating procedure which was designed by Airbus wants us to extend the gear sometime after the flaps are selected to 2 and before the flaps are set to 3. Due to operational reasons, it may be needed to do it earlier or later. Most of tme, we follow the standard procedure. Goal is to be stabilzied and ready to land on a standard approach at 1000 feet over the runway threshold. We read the landing checklist. In the Airbus it is just landing no blue. If the gear would not be down, we would see the gear as open item in blue in the electronic checklist. Also, if would not extend the gear prior to landing, there would be a „landing gear not down“ warning below 750 feet radio altitude telling us that we forgot it. Due to the standard procedures and the warning system, the chance of a gear up landing of an Airbus A320 is almost 0. I assume that the Cessna twin has no warning system.
@cactusbase3088
@cactusbase3088 7 ай бұрын
Surprised you would do a go around if there is any chance your engines and/or props were ruined by the props coming into contact with the ground. Guess you had little choice and prayed everything will be ok for another chance to land safely.

Max reverse is noisy. So we used idle reverse for noise abatement. The actual flare distance was not that long, so I could switch off the autobrake soon and continued with manual braking with a lower deceleration rate as autobrake medium.

These videos are such a treat. Really interesting with the different procedures for Edinburgh for taxiing. I'm sorry I always have questions in relation to your SOP, but when you ask for a VLS check, and the FO says he can "give you 2 on top" which I assume is 2 kts on top of the calculated VLS - what is the function and advantage of this?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the good feedback! During the VLS check, we compare the VLS from the MCDU, which is calculated on the basis of the entered zero fuel weight and the remaining fuel with the VLS displayed on the PFD. The PFD VLS is calculated on the basis of aerodynamical data (angle of attac) and entered CG. If the PFD VLS is higher than the MCDU VLS, we add the difference to the MCDU approach speed.

Another fantastic video of a scenic arrival at the "Athens of the North" which is Edinburgh's nickname. Perhaps the Runway 24 displaced Threshold is also due to the close proximity of the Railway line ,did you see the Train running left to right?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the great feedback! I agree. It also looks to me that the threshold may have been displaced because of the train tracks. I assume that without the displaced threshold, the planes would be flying too low over the train tracks.

I cannot comment on flights of other airlines. But I can tell you that the Airbus A320 series does not stall in normal law. That means as long as all the systems are working fine, the airplane never will stall. There are protection systems installed to keep the plane in the normal flight envelope. If you hear the stall warning voice during a normal flight, the airplane must have serious technical defects and the pilot - for sure - is flying too slow.

Fantastic video. I wonder that it's a safety call for full length landing aircraft to wait on the parallel taxi way giving way to you, rather than a shorter length exiting aircraft having to wait closer to the active runway?
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
The local regulations require everybody who leaves at the end to wait at that intersection until further taxi clearance is received. Safety wise that makes lots of sense as it avoids a possible conflict with the next arriving airplane which leaves prior to the end. A member of the ATC team explained here that they even may have kept the aircraft waiting because the stand or the final way to the parking position was still blocked.

Great videos, really enjoy your channel, one question though, it sounds like most of the RT readbacks are the wrong way around? Is that hows its done in Germany? E.g ATC says "Eurowings 96NA turn left heading 110". Its a command from them to you, so the readback should be instruction then callsign like: "Left heading 110, Eurowings 96NA" instead of call sign instruction like it comes from ATC.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
This remark came already up earlier. It is all about improving flight safety. Here is a copy of my previous answer. I hope that helps a little to understand why this is done sometimes:. Every country has different ideas about how they like the pilots to answer to ATC. But in general, both ways are accepted as long as the readback is coming timely and correctly. The reason for saying first the callsign and then the cleared altitude, heading or so is that when doing so the pilot flying dials the altitude ... into the flight management system and the pilot monitoring reads the altitude ... from the cockpit displays in the readback instead of just repeating the ATC message. Saying the callsign first gives the pilot flying the time to set the altitude ... in the system. If the altitude would be read to ATC from the display first and then the callsign, a slight answer delay may be possible. Especially in high density airspaces, ATC expects an answer without any delay.

This is something that is taught in Germany. However it should be common sense that when you fly elsewhere you use the standard phraseology. Just like americans should not use combination of numbers "American Fifteen Fortynine" when flying outside US but instead say "American One Five Four Niner" which is the standard.

Thanks for being a regular viewer and for the good feedback! The workload during straight and level flight is in large and small planes not very high. During approaches and departures, the workload is much higher. If there is only one pilot, she or he must do everything alone. 2 pilots share the work and monitor each other for additional safety. A single engine, small airplane has no complicated hydraulic or other systems. I would say, flying an Airbus is way more challenging than flying a single engine small plane. But the workload may be sometimes higher in a small plane because there is only one pilot doing all the work.

Thank you for your video Captain, as a flight simulator enthusiast flying the a320 your videos offer a great insight. I was wondering in what situations you opt to use v/s as opposed to managed or open descent.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
We use vertical speed when a certain rate is given by ATC or when in climb or descent and other traffic is close by. In that cases, we limit the vertical speed when approaching the target altitude. We do not want more than 1000 to 1500 feet per minute in those situations. Higher vertical speeds may force a TCAS traffic or resolution advisory, which we do not want in any case.

How come they didn't marshal you into the parking spot? Is that not a thing in Europe? The ground crew was just standing around.
@ApproachandDepartureVideos
@ApproachandDepartureVideos Жыл бұрын
Good question. In between, lots of airports have automatic guide in systems installed. They do not require a marshaller anymore. There is a display which shows the remaining distance and if we have to correct to the right or left. The systems are calibrated to the airplane type. Before using it, we have to make sure that the display shows the correct airplane. Some airports have a ground crew in standby. They take over the marshalling if the electronic system does not work.

I Think Possibly that they would not want to Hold you at B1 as the Rear of the Aircraft would be Close to the Runway in Use, i expect it would be a Generic Procedure as they would have Larger Aircraft Arriving which would Possibly Decrease the Distance of the Rear and the Runway, like i said, just a Theory.
@p111dom
@p111dom Жыл бұрын
That’s true to a certain extent. The default holding points are really a fail safe so if an aircraft vacates at the end and can’t (for whatever reason) contact the ground controller they’ll stop before B1. We wouldn’t normally hold at A8 without a reason. I can’t remember why I held this aircraft but it was probably a request from the ground controller to get the Norwegian to deliberately vacate at the end and hold. Usually this is because their stand is occupied or unavailable.

The goal is to keep the plane on the correct track. Changing winds and thermal activity require more ore less stick inputs to stay on track. Ideally, the inputs are made in a way that the plane always stays on the correct target vertical and lateral track.

Some time ago with my ultralight I landed much shorter than the previous aircraft, so I could vacate the runway before he could reach the same place coming back. He did not even have to wait, because he was far enough, but then when we met at the clubhouse he was disappointed for me having "overtook" him on the taxyway. I wonder what the pilots of the aircraft that had to wait for you could think about the ATC controller that told them to wait 😅
