🔧 Built by Truckers, for Truckers 🔧
Founded by Chace Barber and Eric Little in 2016, Edison Motors is a testament to the trucking spirit. Beginning with a 1969 Kenworth Logging Truck named "Old Blue," they journeyed from Merritt, BC, hauling logs to the Yukon and drilling rigs in Alberta. Frustrated with newer trucks, they rebuilt classics from the frame up, expanding into power generation and off-grid solar systems in 2019. Their journey led to the creation of the Edison Truck, a robust electric truck tailored to logging and heavy vocational industries.
🔩 Upgrade Without Replacing: Edison Electrification Kit 🔩
Keep trucks on the road longer with the Edison Electrification kit. Upgrade your driveline to electric without replacing the entire truck. Ideal for vocational applications, this kit is a cost-effective solution. Unlike other electric trucks, Edison Motors offers customer choice. Choose between Rebuilding (utilizing existing cab and frame rails) or Remanufacturing (brand new frame and chassis).
🚚 Payload Efficiency: The Weight Balance 🚚
Edison Trucks match the weight of a normal diesel truck. With reduced motor weight and additional fuel balancing out battery weight, experience efficiency and increased payload capacity. The L series, though slightly heavier, remains comparable to a normal diesel truck.
🛠️ Keep Your Equipment with Rebuilt Trucks 🛠️
For vocational trucks, keep your equipment with a rebuilt truck. Edison's e-pto and control system integrate seamlessly. No need to replace your entire body when upgrading to an electric truck.

If you look around there’s already a lot of tech that’s sitting in junkyards that might fit the bill. 👍 with some fab work a Tesla drivetrain would fit and give you enough power to go to Mars Or if simplicity is the game “warp 9” DC motors offer big torque and are available with an additional input shaft but you can’t do regen with DC. Could possibly make a cheap nice 2wd setup for “relatively” cheap and minimal fab if you can get that generator mounted and make a battery pack in the floor of the bed.

There is more to the story when comparing to ICE engines. ICE has torque multiplication (and losses) via gears and axle ratios that is typically not specified by manufacturers. It wouldn't look so crazy if you got into the details and compared apples to apples, I'm pretty sure. It will still be very healthy by comparison.
@Sharkey_t
@Sharkey_t 2 ай бұрын
the electric axles are giving a figure for torque at the axle, so its mind bogglingly higher till you calculate out the theoretical axle torque of a typical 1 ton diesel pickup. consider an early 6.7 cummins at 650 lb/ft rated torque, multiply that by the transmission 1st gear and axle ratio, puts you just over 7800 lb/ft at the wheel. considering a more modern 6.7 at 1075 lb/ft at the flywheel, a 4.71 first gear and 3.73 axle ratio, your in theory just under 19000 lb/ft at the tires. keep in mind this doesnt figure in parasitic losses, or the use of torque management. suddenly the 8000 lb/ft figure for the e-axles becomes a little more understandable. the big benefit is where the internal combustion engine needs some rpm to hit that peak torque value, the electric motor does it right from a stop.

I am really pleased that this project exists. I have a 1988 Bronco full-size that's been in my family since new and mine since about '97, and for years I've been hoping that when the drivetrain gave out I could replace it with an electric or hybrid one. Your current kit isn't quite what it would need, but it's a lot closer than anything that existed before. And I figure that the engine will probably last another decade before needing replacement, which should be plenty of time either for you to develop a single-motor kit or for your installers to get good enough at this to put one together as a custom job. (Alternately, if that doesn't work, I'll keep the Bronco stock and get an IH Scout. With solid axles and a 1-ton suspension, it would be about perfect for this.) Now, if only someone would give me some hope that I'll be able to get replacement batteries for my 2012 electric car when it needs them!

@@jaredlancaster4137 There's even a few 60s broncos still kicking around. My sister has one, still has the 6 cylinder 170ci engine in it, though the ignition's been upgraded to electronic. Still runs, but i'm always afraid somebody's going to rear end me because it accelerates to slow. My dad bought one of the first ones built, new from Detroit in 1965. The first time he put it into 4wheel drive, it bound up and wouldn't move. They had to truck it back to Detroit and sent another one. Apparent they used Falcon rear ends in front and back and hadn't did whatever they needed to do, to make the front one in reverse, so when he put it into 4 wheel drive, the front end went in reverse and the back forward. I'm kinda thinking those early broncos might be a bit small to fit in a conversion kit, but seems like the later full sized ones would have enough room and suspension to work.

Really excited where this goes. For me, i tow a 44' Gooseneck Camper/Hauler to race tracks a lot. Some tracks don't have power, so having an option to use the truck as a generator for 120/240 to power the AC and other accessories in the trailer is great. Then having the option to run a welder for when, inevitably, i bend something up, sounds perfect. For long hauls, just pulling over and crashing in the trailer for the night without having to worry about running a generator all night is also a huge benefit. Also having it act as a emergency generator for power outages/disasters would be phenomenal. Can't wait for more info!

Yes, and no. Generator PACKAGES from Cat or anyone else are really two parts and ICE and a generator. A generator is just a spinney thing that the engine drives, any engine that has adequate power and can turn at the right RPM. Car engines are happy running at steady rpms. You would need a governor system for the engine, but those aren't exotic at all and can be found as a universal stand alone if you have a cable throttle. It is more complicated, probably enough not to do at the beta stage, but not really complicated. There are also reasons why it is less complicated, like have to convert the fuel system to diesel in a gas vehicle, not having to create custom motor mounts for the generator power pack (the gen. windings would bolt up through a bell housing adaptor). It would not be as efficient as a manufactured gen set though.

@@dwaynepenner2788 what I meant was that if you look at the manuals of many newer trucks (post 2008 diesel) they need Regen and they dont like to sit at one speed unless it's the exact right speed for that yeah and if you run it to high then you can over heat the emissions system unless your at highway speeds and even then they have burned. So my point is that it will be a massive headache to support them so he should avoid that for version 1 of the system.

This sounds great for trucks that are more then 40-ish years old. I would imagine all the integrated electronics on newer stuff would make retrofitting less appealing. Still, for what they want money wise for a new truck, you can probably buy a decent rolling chassis and just retrofit it. Once you got your side of the retrofit kit set in stone maybe you could do a series or a collab with someone on actually retrofitting a work truck with a money breakdown at the end. Your kit cost $X, a good rolling chassis cost $Y, with $Z amount of extra stuff, to get a new old work truck for $XX that matches or surpasses the performance of a new $80K F350 or 3500.

I absolutely love this project and while I don’t have the money to do this right now, if I do in the future I will definitely upgrade my truck - or get another one with a blown motor and upgrade it so I can swap over easily. I’m in earthmoving so I tow a lot of heavy machinery both on the highway and off road, so 4x4, big power, and big torque but still in the small truck that can get into difficult places would be a huge upgrade for me. You guys are doing an amazing job and I wish you every success from Down Under.

Just waiting for a half-ton classic truck retrofit kit! My '78 F150 is begging to have a generator mated behind the old 300 I-6 wired to an electric rear axle. Fixes driveline angle issues when it's lowered, makes it more economical to operate, and may more fun for cruising around. And leaves the 300 in place for nostalgia.

Im doing this as soon as I can. I love my 2017 F350, it can tow anything I need, but it keeps the fancy comforts of a new truck. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the 6.7 or the Ford tranny, both are amazing. But I run 40s (no lift), and tow a fifth wheel camper. Being able to save on fuel, and have that MASSIVE power for my big wheels would be insane I also want to get a Kelderman air kit or a AnyLevel, both would benifit from the PTO style of the eddison system, simplifying it all I want my truck to be a all around family camper hauler ir Dailey drive truck. It currently is, but a hybrid would just perfect my dream... Thank you edision!

Im not sure if you have covered this or not but how does heat an ac work? Are there electric hvac options for different vehicles? Being canadian, these are both necessities.
@Egress.

Yes, they could either install a heat pump system for both ac and heat (what some electric cars do) or a standard electric ac compressor and resistive heat, or run it off the generators motor like a normal car/truck
@autobootpiloot
@autobootpiloot 7 ай бұрын
In their big rig they have a diesel heater to provide heat for the batteries and the cab. Not sure how they cool the cab, if they even cool the cab at this point. There are oem or aftermarket electric airconditioners so maybe its up to the installer to figure that out.

@@Egress.100%. I have a diesel heater in my caravan and it’s very effective. Would be great in the truck since you already have the diesel there in the tank for the generator, so as you say you can use it any time, not just with the motor running.

For the AC they could just retrofit to an electric pump and keep existing piping. And for heating most efficient would be electric or diesel heater depending on climate heat pump might not work.

Adding one of those kits into a truck would be like having a new truck. Recycling the frame etc. is greener then buying a new truck. When i was a welder, It would have been pretty nice to have one outfitted for welding. I had a one ton with welder generator in the back, right behind the cab and it was a big loud beast because it had to be big enough to handle hundreds of amps surge when welding structural pieces. I'd image having a smaller cat generator feeding batteries would have been more efficient and welding would have been a bit more consistent welds as the supply current would have been more even. Not to mention so damn loud you had to turn it off to talk.
