Post processing skills are as essential as camera skills. I used work in a camera shop and was constantly having people buying certain camera models because they saw an amazing photograph that had been taken with it. But then they were always disappointed that they couldn’t get that “look” straight from the camera.

In the graphic design field, I've caused a lot of issue with not delivering perfect photos straight from .raw - literally just shoot, batch and deliver. There isn't a whole lot of time to edit or anything. I would say it's dumb to try and deliver 5 star products in zero time, but that's the reality of it.

When people see some of my photos (not saying that I'm the best but better than average point and shoot photographer) and they ask, "What kind of camera do you own ?" I always answered, "Give me yours and I'll take just as good of a photo with it." Post processing will make many ordinary photos better but that doesn't mean that you can't get an excellent shot in camera. It mostly involves knowing how to operate the camera you have (take it off auto-everything) and paying attention to lighting, composition, and subject matter.

So, I’m a bit of a noob when it comes to photography, and I have a question. When he is removing the people from the steps in one of the first edits, how does photoshop know that behind the people should be steps? In de video it seems like all Peter does is remove the people and the steps just magickly appear behind them, how does that work?

Spot fix, takes the surroundings and tries to replace them. If it's not good enough you can do it yourself
