A nice update. I attended the memorial at SplitRock Lighthouse Sunday the 10th. It was well attended and still garners interest as to what happened. As I’ve said before the best information is found here with Capn Darrell Walton. He is a master of interpreting maritime bureaucratic language into landlubber English. Thanks for your insight Salute

Lovely story about Mrs Hudson R.I.P and the Aunt. What an honour ! It was gloomy day here in Mississauga Ontario on the anniversary of the Fitz's loss. I'll never forget that morning, waking up to the church bells ringing on my radio alarm clock. My alarm was set to go off at 7am, so the top of the hour news was laying on CKLW, which was touted as a Detroit radio station, but is located in Windsor, Ontario. "CK" was the Top 40 Rock station on the AM dial. I was in 9th grade, and I remember walking to school that morning in a stunned daze because of the loss of life. My Dad often took us to the St. Clair River, and when a freighter would pass, he would tell us to watch it until it was out of sight and say a prayer for the crew. I still do that, probably because of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Dad's lesson might not have made a lifelong impact if not for that.

I was looking forward to this. Hearing Captain Darrell and Mr. Don talk is like being at a bar, and you get to hear 2 veterans of the seas tell the best stories. I read somewhere about when Gordon Lightfoot passed away someone said "When Gordon gets to Heaven, the Fitzgerald crew will be there to greet him, and they will say "Hey. Let him in. He's the reason everyone on earth still remember us." Hard to believe it's been 49 years. A beloved ship lost due to the violence of mother nature and the fury of Lake Superior. My brother Tom was only 9 months old when the Fitzgerald sank. And my Mom told me she remembered seeing it on the news. And now, both of them are watching the videos. Keep up the great work, Mr. Don. I recently performed in 10 November as a community theatre production and like others have binge watched your episodes on the Edmund Fitzgerald to learn more about it. I couldn't find the exact one, but I thought you once talked about the Fitz being a weather boat and that they missed making the 1pm report that day. I recently watched a movie by Titanic Films by Mark that was done in the 90s, I believe, which had one theorist with chart maps and a model boat who thought the Fitz hit something on its way toward Otterhead lighthouse, we'll before it was near Sixth Fathom Shoal. In another presentation by Ric Mixter, he put the Fitz at this location around 1pm. I'd like to know your thoughts about this. Could this be why the 1pm weather report was not done? I don't know if you've seen that video and theory, so just wanted to mention it. Thank you for doing these videos and keeping the memory of the crew alive for us.

Thanks for all the binge watching! That's big in my world. I believe the Fitz went aground on the shoal off Caribou Island...and began taking water in her center cargo hold. However, her keel was already loose and coming apart across Lake Superior. Bottom line, she had structural issues and was not sea worthy...and should not have been sailing without going to the shipyard for major repairs first. HMM

Thank you HMM & Capt. Darrell for another great installment. The story of Ruth Hudson's passing on the 40th anniversary is interesting. I wonder though would the bell ringing have actually taken place on November 10th? If so maybe the story is just a legend? I think you are right, one of the main reasons the Edmund Fitzgerald still has the interest of so many people is thanks to Gordon Lightfoot's song, regardless if the lyrics are 100% accurate. I have never heard anything negative about Gordon, it seems like he was a very down to earth guy. Also, some interesting info from Capt. Darrell on what caused the demise of Oglebay Norton. I really hope Capt Darrell can attend the 50th anniversary ceremony next year and you get to join him. The bell ringing and the pictures to close the video (and the series) was very touching. May they all rest in peace!

Not only would it have been harder to rhyme anything with Zug Island but unless you are familiar with the Great Lakes you've probably never heard of it! Whereas people are more likely to have heard of Cleveland.

Can't argue with that. Although, Zug Island is in Detroit...so could have went with that. Then again, Detroit doesn't rhyme much with anything either. Cleveland it is! Thanks...HMM

I always thought when they rang the bell for the captain and the entire crew they should have ring the bell one more time for the ship itself....
