Watching this series never fails to make me emotional. After I went through SA, my attitude for school completely changed, I was Skivving lessons, leaving and not coming back, refusing to work. Watching these children suffer through such hard times makes me so sad especially when the teachers don’t give up. My teachers never gave up. I’m now so much better and I think if they had fed into my negativity, I wouldn’t have the grades I do and also I wouldn’t still be in school

As a former drama teacher, it was so gratifying that the arts really helped nurture Katie emote through her clear struggles and allow her to demonstrate her creative intelligence. Even if she wasn't learning from it, just giving her the chance to feel free and less restrained and how it impacted her behaviour was beautiful.

When I was in HS I had so much shit going on, I was in an abusive(not physical) relationship with a guy a couple years older, dealing with an eating disorder, SH and severe depression, it was the drug counselor who actually listened to me and helped me a lot (rumors had the teachers thinking I was on drugs so my mum requested I got put on a drug testing program that included a counselor). During that time, I had a minor breakdown during maths and couldn't do my work. The teacher yelled at me, making me cry, I asked if I could go to the office to calm down but he called me a baby and told me if I was going to act like a baby I could sit in a junior class for the rest of the lesson because he wasn't going to deal with my crap and if I wasn't going to do my work in his class then not to return🙃 so I didn't for a week, I went to my mates mates class, told her teacher what happened and she was more than happy to let me sit in until I felt comfortable enough to return to my own class
@gabriellejae8128Ай бұрын
I'm so sorry that happened. Honestly, some teachers really shouldn't be teachers if they're not prepared to actually care for the kids they're teaching. I'm glad that you had people there who listened though. I know from experience too that having a good teacher makes a world of difference to your school life
@Ezra_Malfoy97Ай бұрын
@gabriellejae8128 thanks, yeah I mean that same asshole teacher would make a point to only really teach the smarter kids in our class and give the ones of us who were struggling fuck all attention and blame us for not knowing how to figure it out. I ended up having to redo that whole class with a different teacher, thank god. My high school was full of teachers like that, though. Only a couple of good ones that made school bearable for me and so many other students. I'm so glad to be out of there, I just hope they've gotten in better teachers by the time my kids go there 😅
@gabriellejae8128Ай бұрын
@@Ezra_Malfoy97 omg same! I had a physics teacher that only gave the time of day to his A-level students and he was condescending as fuck to the rest of us. I also had a maths teacher and an art teacher that were the same. I really don't understand why they become teachers if they don't like kids. Maybe it's a power thing? 😅
@Ezra_Malfoy97Ай бұрын
@gabriellejae8128 oh its definitely a power thing! It's like they get off on weeding out the students who need extra help and then watching them fail. I had a science teacher who was like that 2 years in a row, almost 3 but me and a few other students walked out of her class within days of that 3rd year starting and chose a study class instead because of how bad she was 😅 the school didn't even care that we'd done it but I mean they did keep a pedo music teacher around for like 10 years, he was fired at some point after I left but yeahh lovely place to be haha

I feel like especially with children/teens people are so quick to say "oh he/she is just a bad kid" and sure there might be some where it's true. But from watching these videos you can tell that it's always some other problem that's causing the issues. And man it's always hitting hard hearing about the problems these kids are having. It also shows everytime how little things like a teacher saying "good job" or listening to your problems can go a long way.
@esmeecampbell739611 ай бұрын
The thing is almost nobody's experience is actually unique. So your parents got divorced when you were in year 9? So what? Tens of thousands of other children had the exact same thing happen to them and they didn't resort to breaking things, attacking students, disrupting lessons continually, etc. Some people really are just bad. That concept might scare or upset you but it is the truth, some people just choose to act out for selfish reasons, that makes them bad by definition. Time spent on them is wasted because they'll never amount to anything, of course it's hard to determine who is truly a waste of time and who is someone that can be turned around and become a worthwhile member of society. That's the skill. Currently far too much time and money is wasted on people who don't wish to participate in the system and won't ever contribute anything to it.
@kerys_2009_c11 ай бұрын
@@esmeecampbell7396teens can be especially sensitive to things due to their hormones and also everybody reacts differently to trauma and stress, just trying to cope with their own emotions. of course some people are really rude, but you have to remember that it’s because of the way they’ve been socialised and it’s always, absolutely always worth trying to help them. it’s never a waste of time.
@esmeecampbell739611 ай бұрын
@@kerys_2009_c It is a waste of time whenever it doesn't work. By definition... The fact is "hormones" is not an excuse for anything either, as before it is almost the majority of children now will experience or have experienced their parents divorcing while in school, yet not everyone reacts like a savage and destroys property or attacks people. "Everyone reacts differently" exactly my point, they have chosen to react by breaking things, attacking people, disrupting lessons. This is why they are punished, because actions have consequences. Those that don't react to their parents divorce by doing that won't be punished. You are correct some people react differently, they are therefore punished because "reacting differently" is not the cause, it is the result, stop trying to remove culpability from them, they aren't 2 years old, they know right from wrong. You seem to struggle with the definitions of words as a whole. Actually that's a couple of words I've picked up on where you're trying to correct me on the basis of you misunderstanding what they mean. You really don't seem to get that "everyone reacting differently" is the whole point of what I was saying. In no way does that dispute what I said, I may as well have replied "yeah but the sky is blue" it's worse than meaningless it actively disproves your defence of them. Some people react better than others, on the spectrum of behaviour following divorce of parents we SHOULD expect everyone to behave as well as the most well behaved students do BECAUSE those students prove they can. Accepting anything less than that is accepting weakness which shouldn't be tolerated, the human race should be trying to improve, not revelling in failure and defending it.
@kerys_2009_c11 ай бұрын
@@esmeecampbell7396 dude, i’m revising for my geography mock rn so please leave me be after this one, but it seems you misunderstand ME. maybe you have gone through something traumatic yourself and grown apathetic to cope with your trauma, or maybe you have never been traumatised and lack the understanding. people react differently because different things make people feel better. for example, some people like to be alone when they’re anxious to reflect while some prefer to be talking to someone to be distractedly, REMEMBER that’s just an example of how coping can be different, I’m not saying that’s what you mean. you can see it as a selfish action, but please remember they are not selfish people, and that THEY ARE people. please remember that most of those people need help and your mindset does not help (i truly hope you don’t work with kids lmao) and if the help ISN’T helping, it’s because as we’ve established, all kids are different. they all react differently to different treatments. sometimes they just need a different method. it’s never too late to change.
@esmeecampbell739611 ай бұрын
@@kerys_2009_c I won't be lectured to by someone who admits they aren't even finished with MOCK exams, especially not in armchair psychology they learned by watching American TV shows... The best help you can give someone is not coddling them, tell them to face their problems and accept responsibility, nobody is in command of their body but them. Actions have consequences, they aren't going through anything that others haven't been through before, they have therefore no reason not to also succeed and develop as normal people, anything less than that is doing them and everyone else a disservice by enabling failure. In the grand scheme of things nobody is actually different, that's something you've clearly been led to believe, but it's just shit people say to make you feel special. You aren't, statistically speaking almost nobody is or ever will be, you're entirely replaceable, nothing about what makes you "you" is unique to you (there are other people who also like kpop and netball or whatever your couple things are) and nothing that happens in your brain is really unique either, there are really just 4 variations of person and the end result is the same however you act or perceive something, you are in control nobody else, therefore you are responsible nobody else.

As a teaching assistant for teenagers and particularly SEN students, it’s actually crazy how misunderstood kids are and even to regular teachers who don’t have as close a relationship with them that assistants do, because 90% of the time they’re behaving a certain way for a reason. Sometimes just having a bit of patience and taking time to listen to them makes the world of difference!

When i was in HS, i was very shy and had very few friends. every year, my schedule was so different than any of my friend's that i had no classes nor even lunch with them, so i was very lonely. i went to the school councilor to see if i could move my classes around or at least change my lunch so i could see my friends, and they said, "just make new friends." spoiler alert, i did not make new friends because i was shy and awkward, so i spent my final years walking to class alone, doing my homework alone, eating lunch alone...
@junipers-journal5 ай бұрын
I'm going through a tough time right now (I'm at the end of the year, so hopefully next year will be different). I've never really had any friends. I vividly remember in grade 3 and 4, reading a book alone during recess; my "friends" always left me out, and if I wanted to join them, they would make excuses. As a foreign student, the people in my class all speak a different language, so I can never fully understand what they are talking about. I move a lot, so I'm never really able to make a strong connection with people; I always leave before I get close to them, or they leave. I just moved to this new city, and 4 of my friends have left (this was last year); one of my friends is leaving in the next few weeks, and the other is leaving next year at this time. I'm leaving back to my home country in the next two years, so hopefully I won't live abroad ever again. This year, I have made so many complaints to the head teacher. I have asked her to move classes so I can be with my "friends," but every time she has a vague answer for why I can't change classes. I'm so sorry that you couldn't even eat lunch with them; that must be absolutely horrible. The "friends" that I'm with now, we aren't that close; we are as close as you probably are to classmates you know. I think that a lot of people go through this, and schools should really make sure that students have friends in their class because it is so lonely sometimes. The funny thing is, a lot of people say, "you need to tell someone how you are feeling" etc, but i remember a few months ago me and parents were going to pick up my sister from the party and i remember on the ride there seeing my "friends" post stories about how they went to go see movies and went shopping and how it was so fun, this was the first time i had ever been asked to go with them and my parents said no. eventally I lost it, i started crying to my parents about how i was feeling and how my life was so lonely. i heard that night my dad saying something like "not everything is about her, she just needs to suck it up". That memory is the reason why i dont tell anyone how i feel anymore.

Also let's be honest Katie's mother was not helping her situation and I feel like if she's calling her dad in school to cry and says "She'll just yell at me" (most likely about her mother) then maybe she should've lived with him instead. Obviously don't know the reality, just felt like it.

"Wow, I can’t help but appreciate the depth of this series! 'Educating Cardiff' really opens a window into the complexities of adolescence. It’s not just about the school experience; it’s a raw exploration of the challenges faced by teenagers today. The struggles with identity, peer pressure, and mental health are palpable, and the show does an excellent job of showcasing the harsh realities many young people endure. I especially loved the portrayal of the diverse student body. It’s inspiring to see such a mix of backgrounds and stories, which adds layers to their interactions. The friendships formed, the occasional conflicts, and the moments of vulnerability make it all the more relatable. It’s a stark reminder that every student has their own battles, sometimes hidden beneath a facade of bravado. Additionally, the teachers’ roles cannot be overlooked. Their dedication and challenges resonate deeply with anyone in education. It’s interesting to see how they navigate the delicate balance between authority figures and mentors, striving to make a meaningful impact amidst the chaos. Their struggles remind us that teaching is not just a job; it’s a calling. I also appreciate how the series addresses issues such as bullying and mental health, sparking important conversations. It’s vital for viewers to see these topics represented in a realistic light, encouraging empathy and understanding. It’s a call to action - to be kinder to one another and to support those who might be struggling. Overall, 'Educating Cardiff' is more than just an educational documentary; it’s a mirror reflecting the intricacies of youth culture and a reminder of the importance of compassion in our daily lives. It compels us to look deeper, listen more, and be more aware of the struggles that those around us might face. Hats off to the creators for producing such a thought-provoking and heartfelt series! Can't wait for more episodes!"

The reason there is a starter minimum wage is because there is a concern that young people will be disadvantaged in the job market because of their lack of experience. There is some evidence for this.

Educating Cardiff is the best one out of all the Educating series, because these teachers actually care about they're students and help them improve their behaviour and get them through bad stuff.

Omg some finally gets the effect split parents have on the kids!! Im in care (luckly i move out of care next year) Im here becuase of how my parents splitting up affected me and my mental health. Cares not the best but its not the worst and I am doing so much better now that i previously was. Honestly its great to get some recognition of how things affect people.

Plenty of children have parents that get divorced while they're in school, around 25%-33% of all students it'll happen to. They don't all act out, break things, disrupt lessons, attack students, etc. It isn't an excuse.
@colbykindalive11 ай бұрын
@@esmeecampbell7396 no one said its an excuse. But it can affect children in many different ways. Trust me I am talking from experience
@esmeecampbell739611 ай бұрын
@@colbykindalive I didn't say it didn't affect them, I said other children that were also affected didn't act as bad. I don't need to "trust" you, the simple fact is that some other people go through the same thing, statistically divorce is incredibly common, yet half the children in every school aren't uncontrollable evil shits. QED they don't have any excuse to be.

I was just like Katie because I was dealing with a lot of stuff at home, being in an abusive relationship and I had/have mental health issues my school was just ignoring. I would ask all the time to come in at the end of the day to collect all the work I'd missed and I'd do it at home or with a tutor and they said no so I left in year 10 without any GSCE's. In my late 20s now and back in college getting my maths and english so I can do a course next year then go uni the year after to become a social worker and help kids like me

That's amazing well done you! It's a very noble thing to do and I'm sure you'll be an excellent social worker, my mum is one and it's a lot of work but it changes lives and can have such a positive impact on young people, good luck on your journey. ❤

@@shannyanniedoodahI too was another Katie, I was in the top set for everything but unfortunately due to anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, being on the spectrum, problems at home and SA, i dropped out in years 9. Seeing Katie sing whilst reading your comment has made me tear up. I just want to say you'll be an amazing social worker, good luck. I'm so glad you overcame everything you went through at such a young age and came out the other side. You're amazing ❤

@NoNameNomad.... thank you so much, what a lovely thing to say. I've managed to pass my English and maths level 2 and am unexpectedly 5 months pregnant now after trying for 7 years so I'm taking a year off but I'll be back in college next year to do my full time course. I really hope you've managed to overcome everything too, I know how hard living with ptsd and trauma from your childhood is and I wish nothing but the best for you 💖

@@shannyanniedoodah thank you so much, yeah I'm doing good thank you. Well done on passing your exams. Congratulations on your pregnancy, that's great news. Enjoy your little bundle of joy and take all the time you need. Being a mum is the most rewarding experience. I'm yet to conceive, but i know it'll happen one day. That's amazing after 7 years of trying, congratulations. You'll make a fantastic social worker and an amazing mum 💖

The system really is wrong. I know teaching is a stressful and a hard job but shouting as the first course of action isn’t effective. You are more likely to shut down someone down and make the situation worse. If I was having problems, as shown in the video, a conversation is much more efffective.

Great reaction breakdown Cam! Love the heart and compassion you have. This student did well considering her grandma passing away before her mock exams. My mum passed away in April 2000 on Mother’s Day that year in my GCSE year. June was when I had to take my final exams and I somehow got 8 GCSE A-Cs. The strength and resilience that people can have to push through and still achieve truly astounds me. Congrats to her and also a congrats to me too. It’s not easy but it’s not impossible. ❤

*Here in America at least, why the 16 year olds get paid less than the 18 & 21 year olds at minimum wage jobs are for the following reasons:: Let's say the work in a deli, the 15 and 16 year olds are Not allowed to work certain machinery..including a deli slicer. Same goes for let's say they want to work in a warehouse store like Home Depot, they aren't allowed to operate "heavy machinery" such as the Forklifts to move pallets around, until their 18 years old. Other places such as restaurants etc. The employees aren't allowed to handle alcohol (which includes serving alcohol to customers) until they are 21 years old. Also, here in America we have child-labor laws in place...for children they cannot legally work until they are 14 years old and from 14 -15 can only work a few hours during certain hours a day with working papers. And 16 - 17 year olds aren't allowed to work passed a maximum # of hours either. Also there are Many child-labor laws preventing them from performing certain other duties legally (such as working with certain chemicals, not being able to work in a factory etc. -depending on state to state as well.* *WITH THAT BEING SAID, of COURSE the school-aged teenager who works in the same place doesn't get paid as much as the 18 or 21 year olds and over....because while they may work the same place and even have the same job title...the Minors legally cannot do alll the same tasks as their older co-workers and also cannot be relied as much as they aren't allowed to work the same amount of hours!*

High school really pissed me off, they were always talking about signs of mental health and people struggling and the signs to look out for but when people show the signs they just see it as bad behaviour and punish you, even when you try to ask for help they say it’s not an “excuse”
