In my 75 years on this planet I have never understood the vague understandings of the definition of liberal and conservative. I would like to propose a real definition. That is simply, we are all born liberal, and as we develop critical thinking skills, experience, and knowledge, we grow conservative. Thus, it is a continuum from left to right as is any timeline. In George Bernard Shaw's play, Back to Methuselah, the serpent says to Eve, "While others ask why, I ask why not". The liberal, with none of life's experiences cannot think of why not. Whereas, the conservative could think of many arguments for why not.
