Even though by some accounts the 1854 London cholera outbreak was declining by the time he figured out the cause he DID give us the skills and concepts we needed to start battling infectious disease outbreaks in a meaningful way. Whenever I find myself wondering if XYZ thing was done at a given point in time, my general rule of thumb is that if the technology/techniques/materials to do a thing existed, *somebody* somewhere probably did, even if it was unpopular or there was excessive risk involved. Humans have always done dumb things in the names of beauty, knowledge, and curiosity, and I fully expect they will continue to do so.
@roxyortiz881910 ай бұрын

@AkumakoCross9 ай бұрын
Sometimes, yes, and I’m not just talking about cosmetic surgery. People do stupid things, period. They always will, period. Risking your life for vanity by submitting to unneeded surgery in a time when surgery was likely to kill you is absolutely stupid.
@tambrabonds9509 ай бұрын
@@AkumakoCross thank you, like sometimes cosmetic surgery IS stupid. Even though I acknowledge that it can be beneficial and even necessary, it's not always. And then we get into leeching and bloodletting and amputation vs. treatment, bile assessment, etc. And then we get to sunning your butthole, eating only raw fruit and vegetables with no nuts or legumes, Botox that could kill you for wrinkles that everyone develops... Some stuff is dumb, because sometimes the solution is self-acceptance rather than change.

Yes! Can’t stand to hear people say that they wish were “natural” like the stars of old….yet most were doing plastic surgery
@carmengogeidnas967010 ай бұрын
Exactly! Marilyn Monroe had a nose job. Much like EVERYONE in Hollywood today. Look up a list of modern celebrities who've had a nose job, it's literally everybody!! It's almost like a right of passage, an unspoken standard
@arsena520910 ай бұрын
the desire to stay "natural" is perfectly fine and understandable, but I will never understand pretending something is natural to achieve that, if people want to be "natural" there needs to be a stop put to pretending not to have gotten anything done by people who have as well as stop shaming people for getting plastic surgery done for any reason as long as it is to make themselves happy with how they look
@violett8749 ай бұрын
@arsena5209 That can't happen until people stop valuing natural over unnatural. As long as society values natural beauty above all, which is not a bad thing per se, there will be an incentive to falsely claim natural beauty and shame those who don't possess it. As an aside, it's super weird to me that at the same time we highly value self love/confidence so we don't just shame people for being naturally ugly, we also shame anyone who even cares about being beautiful. There's really no winning.

there are a lot of stars that are aging gracefully. Many of them have had plastic surgery, but with less untensive interventions for the most part. I think it's a fantastic way to touch up, but when you try to recreate your youth completely, it backfires. It's not that it's worse necessarily. It's that excessive use triggers the uncanny valley effect to some degree.

I'm not surprised people would do surgery like this back then. Humans have been doing stuff to alter their physical appearance permanently for hundreds of years. Lotus feet can be used as a prime example. Men and women who did this surgery were most like convinced things were very safe like our doctors do. They didn't have as much understanding of infection risks amongst other factors that made this risky. I think one of the differences is that doctors will inform you of what can happen cause they know now what can happen.
