This is the most accurate Suzuki Swift review I have ever seen! Well done. I've been driving this car for years, and I have to agree the single biggest problem overall is the really poor factory sound proofing. I have spent a lot of time installing aftermarket adhesive sound deadening mats to the floor and doors, and the difference is truly amazing. The car feels so much more refined, like you would expect of a German car. The biggest surprise is that all the big bumps that used to boom through the whole cabin, are now completely muted. Stereo sounds better too. The single best upgrade I can recommend for this otherwise brilliant little budget car. I hope this helps a fellow old school Swift driver!

Yeah i have the 2007 suzy swift and im not far off doing this mod in mine. Ive taken the back seats out of mine as i occasionally carry small loads in it and its quite noisy with out "seat insulation". Heaps of choices for sounded deadener mat on evil bay, pretty much the same as each other "Butyl rubber sound deadener". Go over the floor pan twice if need be.. G'day from Down under.

Excellent review and comments. My wifes 1.5 manual 2007 has just ticked over 300k, nearly all hot miles. We're the 2nd owner and plan on keeping it to the bitter end due to all the positive points others have made. Servicing consistently by myself every 10k seems to have avoided any major trouble, in fact, I'll probably do the clutch at the end of 2022.(for the first time) Has to have been the least expensive and fun car we ever purchased.....can't say that about many cars.

I own a 1.5 vvt from 2008, it's a very nimble car for the city and no slouch on the highway, with proper maintenance it won't leave you stranded, so far mine has around 183000 km on it and the only big thing I have to replace are the front shocks, one common issues they have at least the japanese versions as far as I know is that some of the bolts on the front calipers get loose and need to get rectified, it's an easy issue to identify because of the clanking noise while going over bumps, the noise will stop if you go over bumps and tap the brakes, nothing major and very cheap to fix. So far? Great car for it's price, very good fuel consumption, handles really well and responsive if you want to get spicy.

Suzuki Swift 2008 owner here, bought it brand new. Been the best car I ever owned - only issues I’ve had are apparently common but unfortunately so expensive to fix: 1. Heater core (you have to take the whole engine out to get to it) broke around 150,000kms. Cost around $2500 - 90% of which was for labour. 2. Instrument Cluster (mechanics apparently have to send the car away to get speedo calibrated, which costs 20x what the part does) which has been playing up for around five years. Part cost me $70. Labour charges plus speedo calibration were quoted at around $2000. I found a mechanics manual online, so bought a part and am going to attempt to fix the instrument cluster myself. Looks simple enough… just got to be careful to disable airbags first!

Thanks for this comment. I went to test drive 2008 Suzuki Swift @ 140 000 km. I found a receipt saying they have flushed it, but it is clogged (heater core apparently). This car also had very poor maintenance history based on stamps. Not too many receipts either. If I hadn't seen that receipt, I wouldn't have known. The car didn't feel as powerful as the one I test drove earlier, same year Suzuki Swift. Does it correlate with loss of power?

Sir what do u mean to be careful to diaable the airbag first?. I own the same year swift but a 1.6 sport Eastern Europe swift with aerial at the front and believe me it's been nothing but trouble since owning it have had rough running issues with check engine light on idling rough and flat spots to find out it was two coil pack failures, due to heat burning the plastic coils at the bottom and now I have a suspected cat failure since connecting to an odb reader and now the car has overheating issues yet the car runs absolutely phenomenal and checked oil it's as clean as can be so no signs of head gasket failure, also put brand new thermostat and water pump still overheats arghhh been nothing but a nightmare :(

Yes, you could. Just prefer to buy the ones made in Japan instead of Eastern Europe. There is a quality difference. Engine wise the 1.3 should be fine.

I have owned this model of Swift over 4 years now. When I bought it had 127k kilometers on it. Now it has over 194k. Somewhat nice car to drive, but i have had too many problems to be satisfied with this car. Problems I have had on top of the usual parts that are normal to wear out: - Something wrong with the gauges, sometimes speedometer doesn't work, other times rev counter stops working. - All the light bulbs in dashboard where the fan controls are doesn't work. - Fault code P0402, which means either faulty Catalytic converter or Oxygen sensor, I think is the latter because never any problems with pollution in yearly inspection. - Broken steering box, the steering doesn't center at all after turning(fixing costs here in Finland between 900-1400€) - The switch of the tailgate broke. I think that is a lot of expensive failures on a car with less than 200k kilometers on it. The more common spare parts for this car are not cheap in Finland either. I have traveled across Sweden 2 years in a row in this car and I think it was pretty comfortable. I do agree that while my traveling speed was around 125 kph, the tire noise is pretty loud at that speed.

This car has 2 common problems. Transmission issues (primary shaft bearing) and abs modules. Bearing costs less than 30 euros but mechanics charge hundreds for this time consuming repair. Abs module when fail the owners lost completely brakes. Not the abs! The whole system! A new abs module cost 1000-1300€. A lot of people crash. The worst thing about Suzuki is the brand itself with its poor aftersales. Owners who had these problems try to communicate with the company, but the company already took the money and now "whistles indifferently". Suspension and coil packs/leads also are garbage at around 40-60.000km and they need to be replaced. 300-400€ for suspension and 150€ for coil packs and leads. This car has the best handling, appearance, engine,a really good stereo system, driveability in town and a lot of room for passengers, fair fuel consumption. Gearbox and abs module make it lost the 10/10. Over 50% of owners came across these problems or at least on of them before 100.000k.

@@clintbalzan8926 - The transmission issues that Thanos is referring to, are solely related to the M13A (the 1.3 model) gearbox. It is indeed very weak. The gearbox used in both the 1.5 and 1.6 (Sport) versions is vastly preferable. I'd advise avoiding the 1.3 model due to the almost certain chance of premature gearbox failure. Go for the 1.5. It has almost the same fuel economy and insurance costs as the 1.3, but with more engine flexibility and a much stronger transmission.

My Suzuki Swift is giving me headache after headache, but i can afford the repairs and other second hand cars are even more expensive... I bought it second-hand with 197000 km on the clock with it now being 222000 km. This is my list of issues: - Light switch handle broke internally causing the front lights to not come on. - ABS pump fail. Turned out it was already broken when i bought it, but the previous owner made a botchjob by wiring the rear left brake to the rear right brake. ABS pump and brake booster were replaced. - wishbone rubbers in the front were worn out and had to be replaced. I chose to completely renew the wishbones in the front including the ball joints. - Center and rear exhaust muffelers were worn and rusted and were replaced. - Right front speaker broke due to corroded connectors. Entire speaker was replaced. - Backlight instrument panel for fuel and temperature often ain't working. Choosing to leave that as is. Don't really need that info as much as the speedometer. - Timing chain needs replacing. That will be done asap. - Gearbox will be overhauled soon, including a completely new clutch while were at it. The bearing is starting to become worse... - Starter motor is becoming worn out. Is on the list to be replaced but is not a priority. - Due to a lack of service history it recently got a complete service with every little detail checked. All the filters were changed, engine- and gearbox oil was changed, wipers were replaced, tires were replaced, brake fluid was replaced, foggy headlights were cleaned up, a bit of rust on a brakeline was checked and cleaned, spark plugs were changed, AC received a full service and the car was deep cleaned. Luckily the garage owner is a collegue of mine which means i usually pay half of what things would normally cost. This means i will do the timing chain and gearbox overhaul despite the high cost. There is no sign of rust on the car so i am planning to keep it for a couple more years!

Get a basic engine code module for Japanese cars that plugs into the dash and read off the fault code. They are very cheap. You can delete the fault with the module also. My 2006 Swift occasionally reports a Catalytic Converter error after long motorway runs, but I just delete the fault report, the engine warning light goes away, and all is fine. I've been doing this for years!
