If you’ve had enough with your annoying routers like me, should you go for a mesh wifi system? Is Eero mesh wifi worth it? And what are the reasons you shouldn’t get the Eero mesh wifi system?
We are going to explore the pros and cons of Eero based on my personal experience with the it.
Both Eero 6 and Eero Secure services have become available in Australia since the video is published.

Best mesh system is ASUS’s AI-mesh. I’m running 1 tri-band with 6E as the main, and two dual-band ASUS routers. Of course you can just run 3 tri-band or 3 dual-bands. All 3 of my routers are ROG and Wifi-6. At the moment my phone gets about 800mb down everywhere inside the house both up and down stairs, with smooth transition between routers. My ISP speed is 1000mb down which I do get when wired in. Both mesh routers are wired directly to the main router and positioned to 3 areas of the house with main upstairs. If you want to copy this, remember to set 2.4G to 40hz, channel 11, and 5G to 80hz, channel 48 with auto DFS off. Under game accel/QoS, disable QoS and game prioritizing. With WIFI-6 this isn’t necessary, for serious gamers their PC are wired in via Ethernet anyway.

@@futbol1972 The more expensive ones are Wifi 6. I don't have them but apparently the work much better in congested areas and 'offer faster data transfer speeds. If you’re using a Wi-Fi router with a single device, maximum potential speeds should be up to 40% higher with Wi-Fi 6 compared to Wi-Fi 5.' The cheaper three pack works for me. The three pack has three modems that form a mesh, they're all exactly the same except that one is connected to the network so that forms the base. If you want to extend the network you can just get more of them. Either of the three packs will cover 460 sqm, so you will need to get a few more for your home.

I worked for a internet provider and when we had this available for customer and installed they couldn’t believe how fast and reliable and always have a connection up running. Customers would have a smart tv in a corner of the house that couldn’t use it because of the old technology of the regular router with antennas. We would put one or two beacons depending of the size of the home. One advice that I would give DO NOT connected to a router connected directly into the modem. even if you turned off the router wifi or use it as a bridge you will have problems such as lost connection. I have the PRO model for my gig speed for almost two years and never had a problem.

Hey - if you’re on Optus, you will have to use another router between eero and nbn box. This might be the router provided by Optus where you can put in your Optus user name and password. If you’re on Telstra, you should be able to connect eero directly to nbn box. Honestly, eero is not going to give you that much uplift for your wifi to make a complicated setup worth it.

I have a eero pro 6 and because it does not having any venting in the case it gets quite hot. I had it sat on my oak sideboard and over a 7 week period the heat has caused a crack where two oak boards are joined together. I searched the interenet and found others complaining that the heat sink design of the eero has caused problems. Some people have even sat their eero on a USB Fan Electronic Cooling Fan to solve this issue. Of course Amazon are reluctant to admit their design looks cool but does not function as well as they like to pretend. The new eero max 7 does have venting in the box, so they altered their desgn.

If you have eero connected to your modem in the living room and you connect to it when you get home, then you move to your bedroom, it will not move your wifi to your bedroom eero. Unless you disconnect wifi and then reconnect, then it will connect to the nearest. That is annoying when you are WFH, and even tho you have eero in your bedroom, your laptop won’t automatically switch to your bedroom. I’ve had to had an ethernet plug coming out of my bedroom eero to just hard wire it.

Yeah I think I've experienced this too. I have some wifi connected smart lights that are always connected to a far away node. I think it's up to the device to determine which node they want to connect to and how long they want to hold onto it until the signal is bad enough to seek other options. In saying that, I do remember seeing somewhere that other mesh wifi system allows you to manually pick a node for each device.

What I find interesting is that the gen 5 Echo and echo dots work as repeaters for the Eero and the gen 4 echo and echo dots are receiving software updates to also be repeaters for Eero. What I hate is that it takes a subscription to access the advance features.
@malchir4036
@malchir4036 Жыл бұрын
The problem with the dot repeaters is that their speed is limited, max 100Mb/s I believe. You don't want that in whatever part of your house where you actually need the Dot if you have a good connection.
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 Жыл бұрын
@@malchir4036 Well the Echo Dot gen 4 require 2.4 GHz WiFi so presumably they would be a single band remote station and hence would have to compete with all the neighbouring base stations for open channels, both to provide the service and for the backhaul but a lot of people would have ISP subscriptions that are less than 100 Mbps anyways so it would still be a useful mesh setup with the potential of adding more competent remote stations where and if needed. Indeed, most homes aren't even large enough to require a mesh system and only would want the mesh WiFi for the support of a greater number of devices for IoT and the range for security cameras and smart locks. Of course, for home automation, it may still be better to use Z-wave, ZigBee, Bluetooth low energy (switchbots) or even the old X-10 devices for the lower power draw instead of WiFi but it looks like the WiFi devices are now much less expensive.

@TechRegrets
@TechRegrets 2 жыл бұрын
hey mate - I'd start with some basic diagnostics: - Is the dropouts because the internet is patchy in your area or purely because of eero? For example, checking if any wired devices are also impacted etc. - Is the placement of the eero units too far apart or too close together? Check the specs on the recommended distance between the units. If you still have issues, I'd get in touch with eero support, because this is not normal.
@ewenchan1239
@ewenchan1239 2 жыл бұрын
I've just deployed the eero 6 (deployed it late last night). So far so good. My internet is only good for 250 Mbps up/down, so I don't need the Pro version or whatever, so it works well for what we need (to serve the basement plus our duplex, ~1000 ft^2). I had some issues getting through the initial setup because I wanted to mimic my old Apple AirPort Express base station, with a different IPv4 address/subnet range, and one of my chains of systems would fail to connect to the internet. So, I ended up deleting that entire network and starting it from scratch and leaving as much of it in the default state. Also, the app exhibited a little bit of a weird behaviour in the sense that on my iPhone 6, it wouldn't let me turn off UPnP, but when I downloaded the app onto my iPad, that worked. *shrugs* Oh...and I don't like that you have to connect to an online account to get it to work. I think that if you were going to use some of the other services that actually NEED it, then it would make sense for you to connect to your online (Amazon) account in order for you to get it to work. But, to function as a basic router (again, I got this to replace my old Apple Airport Express base station because wife said that the WiFi reception/signal sucks on our second floor, and the base station is the basement), I should need to sign into nor link it to an online account. Performance wise, it's been stable. I don't always get 250 Mbps up/down on it, but that might either be a function of the network load/throughput for systems and devices that's running in the background or if there is actually a tiny bit of a problem. (I'd get somewhere around 180 Mbps up/down out of a possible 250 Mbps.) But to be able to stream Netflix and KZbin, and for the wife to be able to check Facebook, it works well enough for that. If you have a LOT of heavy traffic, keep in mind that wireless routers/access points function, effectively (most of the time) as network hubs rather than network switches, which usually means that the advertised (read: total) bandwidth is often SHARED acrossed ALL of your devices vs. each device getting said advertised bandwidth. So if you have a LOT of heavy traffic, it is still probably better to use hardwire wherever and whenever you can.
@TechRegrets
@TechRegrets 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the detailed write-up. I'm on an even slower "broadband" service, and it works fine for my needs and no issues streaming 4k content on 1-2 devices.

@@TechRegrets You're welcome. Where we live, we have the option to purchase 1 Gbps down/750 Mbps up internet, but we didn't because that REALLY depends on servers being able to provide that rate of data TO us. (Can't really download at the full 1 Gbps speeds if servers aren't able to serve data at those speeds.) So, 250 Mbps down/up seemed like a decent compromise and it was only like $6 more than what we were previously paying for 60 Mbps down/10 Mbps up cable internet.

Does this work well when u play video games
@TechRegrets
@TechRegrets 2 жыл бұрын
Hey - I think there's too many factors at play here to determine if this will work well for video games: Your internet, the game's servers, wifi vs wired connections. It certainly works better than all my previous routers in my case. I have an XBOX wired to one of the mesh point. Haven't noticed much issues, some games' servers are just bad, and gets a lot of latency.

The easy setup is all good when everything works but the moment you run into issues (e.g. channel conflicts with neighboring wifi) the "simple" options are just not sufficient to fix any issues. Lack of advanced options and configuration make this a risky purchase.

I mean, basically you said its a simple router thats rock solid/stable, and the higher end models have amazing wifi. I dont really see any cons. Most consumers dont need all the crazy extra stuff. Its hard enough these days to find something as solid as this product is. Look anywhere, all you see is (mostly) really good reviews, and the cons are very minor. So you have to pay for some dumb extra features? They arent even needed for the router to function really well. My only big issue I would ever have regarding this system, is what amazon might do with your data, otherwise, it sounds like I might drop my Amplifi Alien and just get something simpler and well...maybe even more reliable overall. Seems like amazon listens and slowly integrates features, and also sounds like they are constantly trying to fix things and make them work better, meanwhile alot of companies dilly dally around and never get their shit straight lol. Its not a surprise that this product is highly rated.

I mean it's not without its issues after 2 years of use. I recently had some issues where my iOS connection keeps dropping. This may be related to a recent firmware update. I somehow managed to fix this by changing the DNS from my ISPs default to Google. I don't know why it would work but the network has been fine so far. There are times where I'm looking to see if there's a better system but every time I search, other brands seem to have even more problems... so sticking with Eero for now.

@@TechRegrets I just got the eero pro 6, swapping from Alien Amplifi, seems better so far overall, half the price too. wifi speeds can be a bit random, but LAN seems okay so far. I gotta give it a bit more time to assess over the other though. SO far, from a gaming standpoint (wired), the eero seems just as good or better than the amplfi was.

I was an early adopter of EERO. It’s the best wi-if system I’ve ever owned. It’s so simple and powerful. You won’t have to worry about fiddling with the Wi-Fi anymore, it just always works like it should.

I can't stand the eero, I had a netgear router that worked perfectly, but didn't have the range I needed. I bought the eero and loved it for about a week, but ever since then, it will randomly disconnect a few times a day and leave the house without internet for 1-10 minutes. I have tried everything, and nothing seems to work. Might just have to bite the bullet and buy a new router again.

How is a specification a bad thing when that is the specification and YOU purchased it? If something doesn't fit your specs, it's not for you, so don't buy it. That's like rating an apple with a con, when you wanted a steak. WTF!
