I may have mentioned this a while back, but I'd like to offer these suggestions: 1. Put together a quick video on the following topics, then provide a link to it when doing individual product reviews. I would imagine you get tired of repeating all these explanations for every product review, and this would help cut down the length of product reviews. A. What is WiFi 5. B. What is WiFi 6 C. What is WiFi 6E D. What is wired backhaul. E. What is wireless backhaul. 2. Develop a rating system for the reviewed routers. Some suggestions on rating categories: A. Wired backhaul speed B. Wireless backhaul speed C. System stability (dropouts, restarts, etc.) D. Price (how much bang for the buck do you get? E. App interface and features F. Web interface and features G. Manufacturer support (e.g. Netgear is pretty stingy on support; they want you to pay them for answering questions after the initial 3 month warranty is over). H. Warranty length I. Ease of setup J. Firmware update (how easy is it to apply? Can it be done manually/automatically? Does it require a restart after the update, or is that handled automatically?) K. Range If you were to develop a rating system akin to what I've provided above, you'd only need to update it as you conduct new reviews. Subscribers to this channel would be notified as ratings are changed/updated/added. LOL...I know it's easy for me to make these suggestions, but not quite so easy for any/all of them to be implemented. I understand completely! Keep up the good work!

First of all, let me just say thanks for offering this suggestion. I’ve been thinking about this very thing, how can I shorten my videos and I’ve considered some (not all) of these steps. With my latest video, I’m now starting to combine the graphs between single router, wireless and wired backhaul. I didn’t mention option numbers anymore. I already do Setup videos on the routers but they are full tutorials which I want to keep since many find them useful. My initial though was to make one video with single router, wired and wireless backhaul options into one video with short explanations. I’ll definitely give it some more thought, I don’t think I’m going to get into warranty and customer service since that can vary. I’ve literally called the same company on multiple occasions with amazing service and full understanding and with zero knowledge from reps, so it’s a hit or miss. I’ve also thought of a point system for bang per buck but it’s difficult to do that as things typically get better over time with similar prices. My thought process for that was, what’s the best for this specific year towards the end of the year but still trying to figure that out. I do appreciate your feedback, one of the best I’ve seen.

No worries, I need to look at the pro 6 numbers again but the pro 6E wasn’t as good as I thought it would be for wireless backhaul. If you’re going that route, for that price I would get the ET8 instead. But they may improve it with firmware updates, it still is fairly new and the eero 6+ did pretty well so I know there’s room for improvement on the pro 6E

There is just not enough 6E devices out there. 6GHz band is also not very good for backhaul due to the limited range.

I have a hyper mini hub that I plug my MacBook Air M3 into via USB-C to get the keyboard working however, I noticed there’s a ethernet port on the back of that hyper hub if I plug directly from the back of that hyper will that give me full speed on my MacBook Air or do I need a USB-C adapter to Internet and plug that directly into the MacBook Air?

Thanks! Ok so I just tested the eero 6+ and I'm starting to think there just needs to be a firmware update for both the eero pro 6e and eero 6+ to make it more consistent for the range tests. It looks like once I pass the 100ft mark, it just wants to connect to the 2.4GHz band which results in slower speeds but sometimes it connects to the 5GHz which does speed up quite a bit. Back to the eero pro 6e, while in the video, I wasn't super confident, now I feel more confident that they just need to do a firmware update to fix the far range tests to stay on the 5GHz. The wireless backhaul was ok as well, I was expecting it to be a bit faster. I will say at this point in time, the Asus ET8 is a better choice, but I will be doing long term tests in the future and I will retest to see if the firmware updates have improved it.

Depends on your scenario, lots of walls? Big place? What's the budget? Wireless or wired backhaul? Orbi rbke963 and Asus ET12 are among my top choices. As far as bang per buck, it's hard to beat TP Link and eero is a solid choice. Maybe I'll make another video on this.

Love the channel and thanks for these reviews! Been watching all your mesh videos here lately trying to decide on which to go with. Time to finally upgrade my 10 year old AC router. I'm about 7000 Sq ft with 3 floors, fairly open concept. Most rooms have a hardline connection (cat5e, unfortunately house was wired 15 years ago and didnt use cat 6 so i guess my future is limited) to them from the equipment room in basement so should use wired backhaul I assume. We have Spectrum gigabit internet. I figure roughly 60 devices at this time (PS5, ring cams, rokus, smart tvs, Echos, lights, tabs, phones, computers, etc. I didn't really wanna go with the $1000 plus range so I was thinking maybe ET8 (i liked the 4 ethernet ports)? Then the new eerro's came out last week. Reliability and ease of use are high on my list as well as the ability to use the extra ports to go to my wired connections with good quality speeds. I tried to be detailed as I could think here so you could maybe give me your opinion on a new mesh system wifi 6E or maybe even wifi 6?

Since your place is big and have multiple floors, my top choices for you would be the expensive ones like the Asus ET12 or the Orbi RBKE963, these should provide good WiFi inside and outside your place. However since you will use wired backhaul, you may possibly get away with the ET8 (I would say 3 of them) or even the 3 pack pro 6e.

Costco"s model designation for it is the AXE5300 but looking on TP-link's website I think it's the same as their new AXE5400? So to further muddy the waters... Not yet, that's on my queue of mesh videos. They both have their pros and cons, it really depends on the user. If you want a quick answer, off the top of my mind, I believe the ET8 performed better (minus range, the eero had more range). I'll do a much more thorough job in the video.

I have used MoCA in the past but wireless backhaul has been getting very good recently. Generally speaking, mesh systems get tested as a unit and in my opinion they do work more consistently then when I used to use two different model routers in the past. The main benefits were switch speeds when you would walk throughout your place, mesh systems typically do a better job of switching your wifi device from one node to another compared to a non mesh system.

Wouldn't the best performance be to add a 2.5 gbe switch on each end (by each node) and then have a complete 2.5 gb network, including the backhaul?

I don't think it works out with only one 2.5 gbe port on each device.

You should be able to do that (I haven't tried) but that means your internet would be capped at gigabit speeds since you would need to use that port to connect to your modem.

For me being technical, I strongly dislike the simplicity of the eero app. I want separate networks, not combined with band steering. Do you think the Asus RT-AX92-U might be a little better than eero 6 pro?

I haven't played with the RT-AX92-U but you will have an insane amount of options with any ASUS you get. If you wanted something comparable to this, I would check out the ASUS ET8.

Can the USB-C cable be replaced for a longer one? I can't tell if the adapter end is built-in or the kind that can be it be disconnected? Seems like an important thing to show considering people want to mount routers in high places and the cord looks very short. You spoke at length about USB-C, but didn't clarify this very important point.

Is it possible to test these mesh WiFi systems on how well they handle "passing the baton" to a different node? I've read some reviews of products where the "handoff" is pretty clunky. I've no idea how a test like this could be conducted, but am guessing to gather truly empirical data it would require super expensive electronic testing gear?

You can do that by performing a speed test near one and walk to the other and perform a speed test until it speeds up. Then you can estimate how quickly they switch nodes.

@@Mhosborn I typically do but don't mention it unless it's bad, something that would take more than a few minutes to switch. Most mesh systems switch within a minute or 2, most switch within 30 seconds.

Thanks! For a 200 sq foot home, you just need a single router. You can buy a mesh and only use one of them. TP Link Deco XE75 is probably the closest thing you would need and it has basic parental controls included. If you don’t mind waiting TP Link will have a router coming out for WiFi 6E. I believe it’s going to be the AXE75.

I soo torn on this same question. But just a heads up the orbi 6e is almost $1,000 dollars more expensive just a heads up so of course the orbi is going to blow the eero 6e outta the water. I think the thing holding me back the most in the eero is the only one 2.5 gig ports on the back. If it had two 2.5 gig ports I’d be all over it. I plan on getting AT&T 2 gig fiber soon and want to be ready. I really want the orbi 6e (which would be overkill for our house,but I still want it lol) it’s just the money 😬

No, those are local speed tests, with line of sight and I'm performing the speed test on the main router (not on the secondary one). You should look at the wireless backhaul speeds and expect something like that for local speed tests and a little slower for Internet speed tests. I personally would get the TP-Link Deco XE75 over this for a wireless backhaul setup if you want a budget system. If you want to pay around a mid tier price for an even better system, I would check out the new ASUS GT6 I just reviewed as that had some great numbers for wireless backhaul.

Hello boss, so with one port being 2.5 and second 1gig, you use 2.5 for connecting it with a modem and that gives you fast wifi, but you are left with 1gig port for the ethernet switch and other devices. Pretty much no difference than eero pro 6. Unless you do the other way around but it still won't work since connecting 1gig port to modem will already make the 2.5 possible to receive 1gig signal. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just not getting why would there be two different ports, why not make two X2.5 The reason I'm asking, I already have 3x eero pro 6 and trying to see if it would make any difference for me to change

Ok, so you bring up a very good point. Yes in an ideal world, it would be best to have 2x2.5Gb ports. One thing you can do as you mentioned and I did try this, you can connect the 1 Gig to your internet (assuming your internet is 1 Gig or less) and use the 2.5Gig to create a fast LAN. This would improve speeds (not for the internet) but for transferring files between your network assuming the devices you were transferring to and the cables you were using (including the switch) support the faster speeds. In short, if you're using wired backhaul and most of your devices are capped at gigabit, there's not much of a point to upgrade to this, yes this is better but not by much if you're coming from the eero Pro 6.

It's a tough question, can be one or the other depends on the distance and the thickness and number of walls. Pro 6E has more potential but they do need to be closer together compared to the pro 6.

What about ethernet connections speed test on 2.5 gig and 1 gigabit?

Ethernet typically reaches the max port speeds but in this case, we only have 1 fast port. So if my server is connected to the 2.5Gbps and my client computer is connected to the other available port which happens to be the gigabit port, then the gigabit port will cap the speeds so I will only see gigabit speeds unless this thing is connected to a switch and my client and server is connected to the switch, then I can get to whatever that switch is capable of.

That would be ideal. I didn’t mention it in the video but you can use the gigabit port for your internet (assuming it’s up to gigabit speeds) and use the 2.5Gb port for wired backhaul. I did try this later on and it does work
