There is literally nothing wrong with this camera if you look from a different perspective. My 5 year old would love to wonder around outside filming things with it, and as its cheaper than a pack of beers, I would happily let him...with no worry about damaging or breaking it. Anyone who is serious about filming would never entertain buying this anyways, so as a childrens "toy" or even a novelty item, it totally gets the job done. No disrespect to Dave at all!!! but, I cant understand this snobby attitude to electronics these days. I used to play my master system on an 8inch black and white tv when I was young. I used to make DISMAL copies of VHS tapes from rental stores and watch movies in dire quality on the worst CRT tv's known to man. On the flip side, my youngest brother who is 11 years younger than me wont even entertain watching a movie unless it is highest quality available. I guess my generation expected and accepted the worst, and hoped for the best.... this generation today just demand the best.

True 7 bucks, great deal, for the crap it is. I have always wondered at the price per production. 10 cent more and 20% better quality. TV commercials blast you out, can't hear the program. A simply compare loop. Noise gate. Op amp or IC. Close caption that is OVER PEOPLES FACES. Really?? A simple IC (FPGA if needed) would solve all these problem and would be pennies over the production run. Plus an CPLD we could up grade without designing new boards. Just don't get it. Or better yet just do 90% of the whole thing on Xilinx chip.

Some people commenting on here about Dave's "bad attitude" seem to have forgotten what this channel is about. This is not a product review channel, or a shopping channel. Dave is not here to give you gift ideas for your kid's birthdays. He is here to talk about electronics; tear-downs are a way of learning how things are made and seeing what sort of quality different things are built to. Dave is ultra-critical because this thing is a cheap piece of crap, built with the cheapest components and casing, yet he is actually pleasantly surprised at the build quality (which the moaners seem to have ignored). The retail price is completely irrelevant for the purposes of Teardown Tuesdays.

not everyone are as fortunate as you are! The reason for cheap products to exist till this day, is because many people still lives in sub-standard compares to your living style. Yes, i do agree that 640 x 480 is a very low resolution for HD Display units like LCD or Plasma, but what if you are living in a trailer with a CRT TV? are they forced to spend hundreds or thoursands of dollars in order to have their memories stored in some form of media? I live and work in Shenzhen, maybe you should come and visit this place, this place is magical, because we have all sorts of prodocts or components for all walks of life! This is OBVIOUSLY not a camcorder SoC! It's a digital still camera SoC with rudimentary video function. Thus one of the reasons for shitty video quality. They basically have to skip most of the image lines to get a readout fast enough for video. It could do more decent DV, if paired with a lower resolution sensor. The designation on the image sensor boad, starting with OV-, perhaps designed for an Omnivision chip? Then of course no way the camera is 3MP, rathermore 2MP. So what's up with the sensor? It could have been "cooked" during reflow, those things are sensitive. Or it could be a replacement type by gcoreinc, and cooked too, because why not. It's not all that tiny by the way, it's reasonably sized. What if it isn't cooked, then it should perform quite nicely with a more sensible lens... on stills, not on videos. The lens is anti-reflection treated! Could have been worse. Then again, i'm not going to argue the merits of a properly coated pinhole. I think the almost-sensible overall design comes from adapting this from another system, perhaps a reasonably usable DSC, or downscaling from a camcorder which had a better lens assembly.

Dave, if you ask people to vote for a tear down, and then you agree to do it, then just do it. Don't say "shit" every 10 seconds. If you don't want to do it, then don't do it. I think this is the first time I can find something to criticize you on. Keep up the good work. I mean it.

People wanted a teardown of the worlds shittiest camcorder, they even suggested the title, they got what they asked for. Apart from when I praised the internals, the camera IS pretty shit. The price does not save it from being shit, it just becomes really good value cheap shit.

For what it costs it's not shit enough to get worked up over. It's a low cost camera you could buy for a kid and it'd do the job. Obviously a 7 dollar camera is not going to meet the needs of a regular user. My biggest complaint (again, considering how dirt cheap this camera is) is the extremely tinny microphone. Honestly if I got one of these things for free I'd find SOME use for it. Like in situation where the camera may get severely damaged and I don't want to risk anything of actual value.

For $7.50 that must be the worlds best value camcorder. Ideal for your kids to play with, blimey, a cheap plastic kids one costs 4 times the price of that thing.

You really pissed me off with this review. Instead of marveling that they can produce a device with a lens, several processing chips, an LCD display and a multitude of SMD components for under $10, you go and disrespect the people and technology that accomplished this marvel of modern technology, design, engineering, production and ingenuity. For your $7.50, it even included a manual and a box! It's not a matter of "you get what you pay for", it is more like "what a wonderful world we live in" when you can get such a marvel for a miserly $7.50!!!! Get some perspective and enjoy life! It's friggin $7.50 for a camcorder! Be proud! That is a reason to be amazed and celebrate, not a reason to call it "the worlds shittiest camcorder:". Be positive, and marvel at what can be done!

I don't understand the outrage. Compared to Dave's $1000 camera, for $7 I think it takes pretty amazing video. Its obviously aimed at kids or someone looking for a camera that they plan to destroy. Nobody in their right mind would expect great video quality from a $7 camera.
@CommodoreFan6410 жыл бұрын
True that, and I'm thinking if you could hack these little things, and attach a constant power source, and using something like a old spare laptop with some recording software, you could setup a cheap security camera for your front door.

@CalcProgrammer110 жыл бұрын
Honestly I'm quite impressed. For the price it's not bad at all. Back in the early 2000's when I was still in middle school my friends and I got a kids' camera called the Digital Blue Movie Creator which was a crappy fixed focus lens, cheap optical "viewfinder", and 320x240 sensor that did poorly compressed JPEGs and maybe 5-10 fps "video". It didn't have a color display or a speaker to play back the video with, only a piezo buzzer and a monochrome LCD to show how much of its tiny internal memory was left. It also required custom software to use. We had tons of fun with it regardless and it cost like $50+. This piece of crap blows it away in every single viable way and costs less than a fifth of what that thing cost. Comparing it that way, I'm definitely impressed. I wouldn't use it today for normal stuff but I would give it to kids or use it in situations I wouldn't want to risk using a good camera.

Bear in mind this is merely something you give to children to play with. Even this guy was impressed at the circuit board build quality, and although the plastics and device build-quality was cheap, that's what you get with something that is more or less intended to be a *TOY*. Clearly nobody would actually use this camera for any serious video-recording, so for what it is I'd say it's worth every bit the $7.50 someone paid for it.

Heck, the labor for this should actually be more than 20$! The only plausible explanation on how they sell this for 7$ is by paying unfair salary. Products like this should be eliminated completely. Think about the people working on the factory and getting 10 cents for a 10 hours of hard work...
@GadgetAddict10 жыл бұрын
While I'm not a fan of unfair working conditions, you also have to consider that a poorly paying job is often better than no job, especially in countries that don't have unemployment benefit schemes. I've seen companies forced to close down because they weren't meeting certain requirements and the staff do not feel like the government have saved them. They feel like they've had a good (relative) paying job taken away from them and don't know where their next meal is going to come from.
