A kid with no budget and max creativity could still produce a masterpiece. That’s my take away from this. Great video to trigger these discussions!

When I was a kid, let's say, 38 years ago - I would have been thrilled with the $100 camera. I used to "make movies" using a very, very bad VHS camcorder that I got at a jumble sale for more than £100 lol. Needless to say, Speilberg didn't feel threatened.

Maybe a used one? For about $150 you should be able to get something with a kit lens, manual WB, ISO, focus, shutter and aperture. Maybe a small Olympus or Samsung from ten years ago, 1080p. :)

Yah, it's very nostalgic. Not in a bad way, not saying that it has terrible quality (it actually performs well for its price) but that kind of aesthetic is making a comeback on younger gen. I just noticed. 😅 Digicams are now vintage

I just got one of those Amazon $100 cameras 📷 and I'm quite pleased we it. I changed the video resolution to 1080P 30FPS, and set it for Fixed Focus. I use a Comica Audio Mixer, connected to two external microphones to record my drum practice sessions. No out-of-focus, no video jitter or pixalization, plus good recording sound. Just be aware that you can't attach most off the shelf camera mics to it because most of these Chinese made camera will only work with a single channel mic 🎤 . That's why I got the Comica audio mixer. I can take two channel audio sources and blend them into a single channel output to the camera. Still alot cheaper than spending $600 to $1K for a beginner or casual use camera. 🎼🎶🎵🎶🥁✌😎

Can you do an Alexa vs the Panasonic G7 match up? The G7 doesn’t have log or anything amazing. But, you can create looks by adjusting curves and a few other things. I think a video like that would appeal to people with a $500 camera budget. With your technical skills it would really illustrate to novices, like myself, the importance of Technique and attention to detail.

Great video , a friend of mine shot an entire feature film 🎥 on a iPhone 6 and now the BFI is funding his next feature film, I do think great tools help, but in the end, at least for auteur cinema , a great vision is the ingredient you can’t buy, but an Alexa is beautiful 😻

Hey Lewis. I hope you are doing well. I have a question. For an emerging writer/director, what sort of budget should I be putting aside for an experienced lighting coordinator / cinematographer? I know everyone is different, but do you personally offer a service where I can be like, "Here is the script, my story board, pictures of my set and actors and props -- what can I get for X amount of money, and B percentage of earnings"? Is this a respectful way to approach a cinematographer who has experience on multiple features or am I going to come off as a huge dummy? As much as I am not (necessarily) intimidated by being my own director / writer / cinematographer, I can't imagine the amount of time it will save during shooting to have someone who will be able to look at the set prior to filming and go, "oh yeah duh, bam bam bam lights go here here here -- if we do it this way we'll get the results we want" Not to mention the equipment you have access to and already know how to use. But I know that costs!! I would never ask anyone to work for free, but I have no idea what I should be presenting to potential collaborators, how much of pre-production planning I need to have done, and how I should be approaching them. Any help would be massively appreciated.

Comparing the EOS-M to the Alexa Classic would have been something to contend with on some level. After shooting raw on the M. Still wouldn’t stack up, but at only a little more or less than double the price of the shit cam, it would have been pretty interesting. Love all your vids, by the way.
